Wild camping on the Seewlistock
The Seewlistock above Attinghausen is a flat grass knoll on an alp, ringed by spruce forest, at 1'546 m. No federal, cantonal or communal rule bans a night, and the landowner, Korporation Uri, permits camping in writing. The alp family 150 m away gets a call first.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Wild camping on the Seewlistock: a grass knoll on a working alp
Wild camping on the Seewlistock means a night on the home pasture of a working cheese alp above Attinghausen, on the steep wooded flank between the village and the Gitschital in canton Uri. The national map puts the name Seewlistock on a knoll at 1'546 m in the commune of Attinghausen, and that is the point this report checks (LV95 2'688'821 / 1'190'908). Two names nearby are easy to mix up with it: the Seewli, a small pond 400 m south-south-west of the knoll, and the Seewlisee, a lake in Silenen ten kilometres away with a rule of its own. Both come up below.1
The Seewlistock is not a rocky summit. It is the grassy high point at the north-east corner of the Heiterboden, an alp clearing of about ten hectares ringed by closed spruce forest. Korporation Uri's alp portal explains the name: "Als Boden benannt wird ein vorwiegend ebenes Geländestück in sonst abfallendem Gebiet", a Boden is a mostly level piece of ground in otherwise falling terrain. On the crown the ground is flat, 1 to 2 degrees, and a level strip runs about 40 m south along the top. To the north and east the knoll drops steeply into the forest within 10 to 20 m. A second flat patch, quieter, lies 40 m north-north-west on a shoulder at 1'542 m.89
The nearest structure is a shed of 12 m², about 45 m south of the crown: the top station of a private goods ropeway, built in 1980, that runs 759 m down to the Regliberg farm and carries no passengers. The alp's buildings stand 154 to 169 m south-west on the Heiterboden: the family's hut with its cheese dairy, a cheese store and three stalls. This is Alp Seewli-Heiterboden, the Unterstafel, or lower pasture, of Alp Grat: "Die Älplerfamilie sömmert hier Kühe und Jungvieh und stellt auf dem Unterstafel Seewli-Heiterboden eigenen Alpkäse her", the family summers cows and young cattle here and makes its own cheese. From mid-July to the end of August family and cows are up on Alp Grat, 2.3 km south-south-west; before and after that, the herd grazes around the knoll.89
Below the tree line, in a clearing. On these slopes the forest closes up to about 1'700 to 1'840 m, and open alp ground begins only above that, towards the Gibelstöcke and Alp Grat. The Seewlistock lies some 200 to 300 m below that line: a clearing in the forest, not open mountain.9
Ask the first question before any law: if a night here were entirely lawful, would anyone put a tent on this ground? Yes. The crown is flat, dry, short-grazed grass; it is not a yard, a road or a lift station, and the nearest front door is 150 m away. The contrast lies 1.85 km north-west across the Gitschital, at Gitschenberg, where the only flat ground is an alp yard at a cable-car top station. In a forest clearing, what decides the night is who owns the ground and what the owner says, and here both are published.9
No law forbids a night here, at any level
Federal. The only federal inventory that touches the knoll is BLN object 1606, "Vierwaldstättersee mit Kernwald, Bürgenstock und Rigi", the landscape inventory of the lake and its mountains; its boundary runs across the crown. The BLN binds federal authorities in their own decisions and fines no visitor. The nearest federal game reserve, the Urirotstock, where Art. 5 Abs. 1 lit. e VEJ bans camping, begins 2.5 km west-north-west, across the Gitschital. No federal wildlife rest zone lies within 5 km, and there is no park, fen, raised bog, amphibian site or dry meadow of national importance at the point.1
Cantonal. Uri has no general camping ban. Neither its police act nor its police regulation says a word about camping, and its camping ordinance governs only public campsites. The one camping fine in the canton sits on its list of fixed penalties, and it is written to hang on something else:4

In English: camping out, tenting or camping in protection zones, read together with the reglement that creates each zone, CHF 150. "Lagern", settling down in the open, is wide enough that a bivvy bag without a tent may well count; that has not been tested, and the safe reading is that it does. On the Seewlistock the question does not arise, because the fine needs a protection zone, and in Uri a zone exists only where a cantonal protection reglement draws one.4
No such reglement reaches the Seewlistock. The nearest, the alpine flora reserve of 1968 around Waldnacht and Surenen, runs up to the crest of the Gibelstöcke, begins 1.3 km from the knoll and bans only picking and digging up wild plants. Uri's cantonal hunting sanctuaries begin 2.7 km away and its nearest wildlife rest zone 5 km away. Where Uri does mean to ban camping, it writes it down, and Attinghausen has the example: since 1 October 2024 the amphibian breeding site Bodenwald, on the valley floor, is protected by a cantonal reglement that forbids "zu lagern, zu zelten und zu campieren sowie Standplätze zu diesen Zwecken zu überlassen" (RB 10.5134, Art. 4 Abs. 2 lit. c). That site begins 1.46 km from the knoll and about 1'090 m lower. The canton may yet write a general rule: in March 2026 the Landrat, Uri's parliament, backed a motion for a cantonal act that keeps wild camping allowed and lets communes set ban zones, and no draft has been published.24
Communal. Attinghausen has neither a police regulation, which is where a Swiss communal camping ban usually lives, nor a camping act, and its legal collection says nothing about tents or camping. Its zoning plan of 2023 puts the knoll in the agricultural zone, which "verfolgt den Zweck, den das Bundesrecht ihr zuordnet", pursues the purpose federal law gives it, and has no camping clause; campsites appear only as installations in the zone for sport and leisure. A tent for one night needs no building permit either: the plan counts as buildings only "auf Dauer angelegten baulichen Vorkehren", structures meant to last, and exempts "für kurze Dauer erstellte Bauten und Anlagen" (Art. 100 Abs. 2 and Art. 101 Abs. 2 lit. e). And no gerichtliches Verbot under Art. 258 ZPO, the court order a landowner uses to ban camping on its land, has been published for the Seewlistock or the Heiterboden in the canton's official gazette since 1999.5
The landowner's own law. Korporation Uri governs its land through a collection of statutes of its own, the Rechtsbuch, and it contains no rule on camping, tents or bivouacs.7
So nobody can be fined for a tent on the Seewlistock under any rule in force. That alone would not be a permission: free access to forest and pasture under Art. 699 ZGB is a right to walk through, not a right to spend the night. What turns the silence into a yes is the owner, who has said it in writing. How these rules work across the country is set out in the national overview.3
How it is possible: the landowner's written yes, and a call to the alp
The Seewlistock is part of parcel 1 of the Attinghausen land register, 10.3 km² of forest, pasture and rock whose named places run from the Bodenwald to Brüsti and Grat. Its owner is Korporation Uri, the largest landowner in the canton, and the register lists "Seewlistock" and "Heiterboden" among the parcel's place names. The knoll, its crown and its shoulder are Korporation ground, and that is not read off an alp list; it is the land register. The same owner's permission is what makes a night lawful on the Surenenpass, at the far end of the commune, and at the Alplersee above Sisikon.3

In English: canton Uri has no general ban on wild camping, so on Korporation Uri ground camping is allowed in principle and needs no registration. The conditions that follow are short: keep to the rules of nature and landscape protection zones; spare the pasture; get a permit for private roads; "Ist der gewählte Platz in der Nähe eines landwirtschaftlichen Betriebes, ist mit dem Älpler/der Älplerin Kontakt aufzunehmen", if your spot is near a farm, get in touch with the alp farmer; tell the Korporation in advance if you stay more than three nights or come with more than ten people; pack your rubbish in the charged bags and leave the place tidy. The page names two exceptions, the commune of Göschenen and the Seewlisee, and neither is here; the Korporation's map set of tent bans has no sheet for Attinghausen. Nothing in the permission carves out forest, alps or ground below the tree line.7
The one condition that bites here. On the Seewlistock you are always near a farm: the knoll is the alp's lower pasture and the huts are 150 m away. The Korporation's wording asks for contact, not for permission; where it means permission it writes Bewilligung, as it does for the Seewlisee. So the call is not a request for a yes, and it is still the first thing you do: the family is working this ground and knows where the cattle are. Nobody at the alp was asked for this report: what the family thinks of a tent on its pasture is not published either way.78
Who to call. Monika and René Herger, 078 745 95 57, the number the Korporation's alp portal and the family's own site publish for the alp. The phone at Alp Grat, 041 870 19 60, is answered from July to September and needs to ring for a while. Ask where the herd is and where a tent is in nobody's way, and take their answer. No fee for a night is published or mentioned anywhere.8
When the herd is here. From mid-July to the end of August family and cows are up on Alp Grat. The Unterstafel around the knoll is typically grazed before that, from about mid-June to mid-July, and again from late August to mid-September. By late September the herd is usually down in the valley, but the date the alp comes down is not published, so call anyway. If the cattle are on the knoll, their pasture comes first: the Korporation's own condition is that the pasture is spared.78
Where the tent goes, and where it does not
On the crown. The flat top at the map point, LV95 2'688'820 / 1'190'905, 1'546 m: short-grazed grass at 1 to 2 degrees, about 45 m from the ropeway shed, 154 m from the huts and 5 to 8 m from the forest edge. Or on the shoulder. 40 m north-north-west, LV95 2'688'805 / 1'190'945, 1'542 m, 1 to 4 degrees, 85 m from the ropeway shed, 168 m from the huts and 14 m from the forest edge; it is the quieter of the two and out of the way between shed and huts. Both are Korporation ground in the agricultural zone, with no cantonal or local protection measure on them.29
Not by the huts. The flattest ground of all is the Heiterboden bench beside the buildings, and it is the alp yard, 2 to 60 m from the huts, where the cattle come in and the cheese is made. Not beside the ropeway shed either, and never among grazing cattle: if the herd is on the knoll, the family's word on where to go settles it.9
Not at the Seewli pond. 370 to 435 m south-south-west, on the way to Seewliberg, lies the Seewli, the little pond the alp is named after, "hier mit schwimmenden Grasinseln", with floating grass islands, as the alp portal puts it. It is a protected amphibian biotope with a fen in the cantonal inventory, and Attinghausen's zoning plan lists it among its local natural objects with three aims: keep the open water as spawning water for amphibians, do not graze the fen, set up a buffer zone on the slope. No tent there, and none on the path beside it.258
Not on the Seewliberg meadow. From 414 m south-south-west, the meadow and buildings of Seewliberg are a separate, privately owned parcel, the alp family's own land. The Korporation's permission covers the Korporation's ground and not this. The marked trail runs along its edge; stay on the path there.3
Not in the forest. The spruce begins a few metres from the crown, and the slope below it drops away steeply. The forest is where Uri's fire ban applies, and on this flank it is no place for a tent.910
The way up, fire, the tourist tax and the hunt
Walk up. The forest roads to Regliberg belong to the Korporation and are closed to motor vehicles: the signals read "Verbot für Motorwagen, Motorräder und Motorfahrräder", with the plate "Fahrt nur mit Bewilligung des Korporationsbürgerrats Attinghausen gestattet", and since January 2023 authorised controllers can issue fixed fines there. The marked round walk of the Uri hiking trails association runs from Brüsti over Nossenboden, Alp Grat, the Gibelstöcke, Seewliberg and Alp Seewli down to Regliberg, Wettmatt, Port and Kohlplatz: 8 km and about three hours for the whole loop, graded medium. The direct way is the steep path from Regliberg, about 1 km with 500 m of climb. The Luftseilbahn Attinghausen-Brüsti takes you up to the start of the loop; its last car down leaves at 19:00, and night runs can be arranged.10
Fire: none at all. The crown is 5 to 8 m from the forest. Since 25 August 2026, when the canton lifted its absolute fire ban, Uri still bans fire in the forest and within 50 m of its edge, fixed fire rings and charcoal grills included. On 24 September 2026 the federal forest-fire warning for Uri stood at "Grosse Gefahr", high danger, level 4 of 5. Take a stove.10
Two francs of tourist tax, maybe. Attinghausen charges a visitor's tax of CHF 2.00 per night from the age of 16 (CHF 1.00 from 6 to 15), and its regulation says that when no host collects it, it is paid directly to the commune, "insbesondere dann, wenn öffentlicher Grund für Übernachtungszwecke genutzt wird", in particular when public ground is used for overnight stays. The ordinance above it taxes people who "entgeltlich übernachten", who pay for their night, so whether a free night on the Korporation's ground is caught is arguable. Both readings stand; two francs at the commune settle it either way. A commune that prices a night on its ground has not banned it.6
The hunt. The Seewlistock is in no hunting sanctuary. Uri's second red-deer block runs from 28 to 30 September 2026 and the small-game season from 12 October to 30 November; expect hunters in the forest on those days and wear something visible.10
Where you can legally sleep
- The crown of the Seewlistock. 1'546 m, at the map point, flat grass on Korporation Uri ground; call the alp family first, 078 745 95 57.78
- The shoulder 40 m north-north-west. 1'542 m, the quieter of the two, 85 m from the ropeway shed and 14 m from the forest.9
- Alp Grat. 1'820 to 1'890 m, 2.3 km south-south-west on the loop, the same family: 24 beds, half board CHF 59 for adults, open in the alp season from July to September, 078 745 95 57.10
- Berggasthaus Brüsti. Rooms at the Brüsti top station, 041 871 00 11; the last cable car down leaves at 19:00.10
- Not at the Seewli pond or on the Seewliberg meadow. A protected amphibian biotope with a fen, and the alp family's private land.23
- Not at the Seewlisee in Silenen without a permit. Ten kilometres away, Korporation Uri bans wild camping there except with a permit obtained in advance; our Seewlisee report has the details.7
- No tent campsite in the valley now. Remo Camping in Altdorf takes no tents, and the lake campsite in Flüelen is open from mid-April to the end of August only.10
General rules for wild camping
This matters more where the answer is yes. Korporation Uri publishes conditions instead of prohibitions, and a knoll on a working alp stays open as long as the people who pitch there behave like guests. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense on a family's pasture.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

An absence can end, and a permission can be changed or withdrawn. The alp's contact, its season and the places to sleep nearby are taken from their publishers as of September 2026 and can change from one season to the next; nothing posted on site was checked, and nobody at the alp was asked. Uri's parliament has asked for a cantonal act on wild camping, which could change the rules, and fire rules in Uri change with the weather. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Auf Gebiet der Korporation Uri ist das Campieren somit grundsätzlich erlaubt und muss nicht angemeldet werden." Under "Folgende Hinweise sind dringend zu beachten": "In Natur- und Landschaftsschutzzonen sind die entsprechenden Regelungen einzuhalten.
