Wild camping at Gitschenberg
Gitschenberg above Seedorf is a summer alp at the top of a four-seat cable car, in a forest clearing under the Gitschen walls. No federal, cantonal or communal rule bans a night, but the only flat ground is the yard by the huts. Alp Honegg, 20 minutes on, takes up to five guests.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping at Gitschenberg: an alp yard at a cable-car station
Wild camping at Gitschenberg means a night on a working summer alp above Seedorf, at the southern end of the Urnersee in canton Uri. The national map puts the name Gitschenberg on the alp itself, at 1'367 m in the commune of Seedorf, and that is the point this report checks (LV95 2'687'770 / 1'192'435). One name to keep apart: Gitschenen, an alp above Isenthal some seven kilometres away on the far side of the Gitschen, is a different place with a different rule, and it comes up below.1
Alp Gitschenberg sits on a debris cone under the rock walls of the Gitschen, 935 m above Seedorf: a pasture clearing of about 14 hectares with closed forest on every side. A small cable car with a single four-seat cabin runs up from Turmmatt, at 435 m beside the bus stop "Seedorf UR, Schloss A Pro", and lands at the huts. Korporation Uri's alp portal puts it plainly: "Direkt bei der Bergstation auf 1369 m ü. M. befindet sich die Alphütte", the alp hut stands right at the top station. For about three months a year a family summers its cows and young cattle up here, makes more than a tonne of alp cheese and runs an Alpbeizli, a small open-air alp restaurant, beside the hut.710
The point sits in the middle of that. It lies 23 m from where the cable car arrives, 19 m from the nearest of the alp's six buildings, 55 to 57 m from the alp hut and the second hut and 60 m from the Alpbeizli. It is the yard of a working alp: where the cattle come in, where the cheese is made, where day visitors sit down at the tables. Ask the first question before any law: if a night here were entirely lawful, would anyone put a sleeping bag down on this ground? No. You would be lying in a farmyard, between the hut windows and the first cabin of the morning.8
Forest, cliffs and one flat yard: the ground around the alp
The clearing is a slope, not a meadow. Most of the ground within 300 m of the point is steeper than 30 degrees, and every patch of open ground flatter than 8 degrees lies within 100 m of a building, on the alp's own parcel. The flattest ground of all, 1 to 3 degrees right beside the huts, is a litter meadow that is mown on 1 September each year under a nature-conservation contract, 880 m² beginning 11 m from the point. The most reasonable-looking spot, 142 m south-west at 4 degrees, is still the edge of the yard, 80 m from a hut and in full view of it.28
Below the tree line. Closed forest climbs from the clearing to about 1'600 m, where the walls of the Wiss Horn, the Gross Horn and the Gitschen take over. At 1'370 m the alp sits well below the tree line: a clearing in the forest, not open mountain.8
Wet ground to leave alone. 86 m north-north-west of the point lies a small fen, lime-rich small sedges around a stream, protected as a local nature zone in Seedorf's zoning plan; the measures listed for it are to fence it off with a buffer, keep mowing it for litter and keep the cattle out. The dry meadows of national importance on the alp, object 10378 "Gitschenberg" in nine small parts, begin 142 m from the point. Neither is a place for a tent, with or without a rule.126
No better ground within reach. Around the clearing, the forest and the cliffs belong to Korporation Uri, which allows camping on its land in principle (more on that below). Within 300 m of the point its open pasture is all steeper than 15 degrees, and the rest is forest and rock. The only open grass above the tree line lies on the east flank of the Gitschen towards the Rinderstöckli, at 1'900 to 2'030 m and 40 to 61 degrees, and from about 1.1 km out it is inside the federal game reserve Urirotstock, in the commune of Isenthal. Alp Honegg, the next alp 650 m south, is no pitch either: its pasture nowhere flattens below 10 degrees, and it is another alp yard with its own Alpbeizli.18
No law forbids a night here, at any level
Federal. The only federal layer at the point is BLN object 1606, "Vierwaldstättersee mit Kernwald, Bürgenstock und Rigi", the landscape inventory of the lake and its mountains. The BLN binds federal authorities in their own decisions and fines no visitor. The federal game reserve Urirotstock, where Art. 5 Abs. 1 lit. e VEJ bans camping, begins 972 m west, on the far side of the Gitschen walls. No federal wildlife rest zone lies within 2 km, and no park, mire, floodplain or amphibian site lies at the point; the dry-meadow inventory binds the canton, which has issued no decree for object 10378.1
Cantonal. Uri has no general camping ban. Neither its police act nor its police regulation says a word about camping, and its camping ordinance of 1961 governs only public campsites run for payment. The one camping fine in the canton sits on its list of fixed penalties, and it is written to hang on something else:4
"Lagern, Zelten oder Campieren in Schutzzonen (Art. 34 Abs. 1 Bst. a des Gesetzes über den Natur- und Heimatschutz, RB 10.5101 in Verbindung mit dem jeweiligen Reglement)"Reglement über die Erhebung von Ordnungsbussen (Ordnungsbussenreglement, OBR), RB 3.9223, Anhang 1, Ziff. 2.1, fixed fine 150 Franken, as in force since 1 April 2025.
In English: camping out, tenting or camping in protection zones, read together with the reglement that creates each zone, CHF 150. "Lagern", settling down in the open, is wide enough that a bivvy bag without a tent may well count; that has not been tested, and the safe reading is that it does. At Gitschenberg the question never comes up, because the fine needs a protection zone, and in Uri a zone exists only where a cantonal protection reglement draws one.4
None of them reaches Gitschenberg. The nearest, the reglement for the south shore of the Urnersee, lists the Seedorf parcels it protects one by one, and the alp's parcel is not among them; its nearest area is 1.5 km away. The alpine flora reserve of 1968 around Waldnacht and Surenen, which takes in the upper Gitschental, begins 2 km off and bans only picking and digging up wild plants. Uri's cantonal hunting sanctuaries begin 1.5 km away and carry no camping rule anyway, and its nearest wildlife rest zone is 5 km off. The canton may yet write a general rule: in March 2026 the Landrat, Uri's parliament, backed a motion for a cantonal act that keeps wild camping allowed and lets communes set ban zones, and no draft has been published.24
Communal. Seedorf has no police regulation and no camping act, and its legal collection says nothing about tents or camping. Its zoning plan of 2018 puts the alp in the agricultural zone and has no camping clause; the fen above the huts is a local nature zone, where "Nutzungen, die diesem Zweck zuwiderlaufen, sind nicht zulässig", uses against its purpose are not allowed: one more reason to stay off the wet ground, and nothing beyond it. Since Bauen merged into Seedorf on 1 January 2021, Bauen's old acts apply only in that village. And no gerichtliches Verbot under art. 258 ZPO, the court order landowners use to ban camping on their land, has been published for Gitschenberg in the canton's official gazette since 1999.6
The Gitschenen trap. Search for camping and Gitschen and you will find a ban. The cantonal reglement protecting the fens and dry meadows on Gitschenen, in the commune of Isenthal, forbids "zu lagern, zu zelten und zu campieren" in its core zones (RB 10.5114, Art. 5 Abs. 2 lit. l), with the CHF 150 above, and Korporation Uri publishes the map for it as "Zeltverbot Gitschenen". That is the alp above Isenthal, 6.6 to 7.1 km from Gitschenberg, behind the mountain. It does not reach the alp above Seedorf.5
So nobody can be fined for a tent at Gitschenberg under any rule in force, and that is not the same as permission. Free access to forest and pasture under Art. 699 ZGB is a right to walk through, not a right to spend the night, and this alp is private ground with a family working on it. A foundation's alp, the Korporation's forest, and no night on offer
The alp is parcel 522 of the Seedorf land register, "Gitschenberg", 21.6 hectares: 13.6 of pasture, 7.7 of closed forest and six buildings. Its owner is the Stiftung Fideikommiss a Pro Uri, entered in the federal UID register as a cantonal foundation under old law. It is the historic A Pro entail, and the Uri Landrat elects its board for four years at a time. The foundation publishes no website, no visitor rules and no overnight offer; its public traces are building applications for the alp's sanitary installations and water supply.3
The alp is run by Hedy and Lukas Herger-Briker, whose number, 079 572 88 84, is published by the Korporation's alp portal, by Uri Tourismus and by the Alpbeizli guide. They spend about three months up here, and the Alpbeizli is open from about June to August. None of those pages mentions a bed, straw, a mattress room or a place for a tent, and the hut listing of the Uri hiking trails association gives its sleeping places as "k.A.", not stated. Nobody at the alp or the foundation was asked for this report: nothing is offered, and nothing is published either way.7
The Korporation's yes, and why it does not help here. Everything around the clearing belongs to Korporation Uri: the forest, the cliffs and the flanks up to the Gitschen, 11.3 km² in one parcel that also takes in Alp Honegg. And the Korporation publishes a standing permission most landowners never give: "Auf Gebiet der Korporation Uri ist das Campieren somit grundsätzlich erlaubt und muss nicht angemeldet werden", camping on its land is allowed in principle and needs no notice, with conditions, among them contacting the alp family when the spot is near a farm. That permission is real, and it is what makes a night lawful at the Alplersee and on the Surenenpass, where the ground itself is Korporation land. Here it covers the ground around the alp, not the alp: the clearing is the foundation's parcel. What it does cover within reach is forest, rock and grass at 15 to 60 degrees, running up into the federal game reserve. There is no pitch on it.378
How it is possible: a night at Alp Honegg, or a bed on the way to Brüsti
The honest way to spend the night up here is 20 minutes on. Alp Honegg, at 1'427 m below the Gitschen summit on the Korporation's land, is reached "in einem kurzen, leichten Fussmarsch", a short easy walk, from the Gitschenberg top station, and the Alpbeizli guide gives it 20 minutes. The Gisler family milks 17 cows there, makes alp cheese and runs an Alpbeizli, and the Korporation's portal adds the sentence that matters here: "Bis zu fünf Gäste können auf der Alp übernachten", up to five guests can stay the night on the alp.9
Who to ask at Alp Honegg. Roger Gisler, 079 363 79 61, the number on the Korporation's alp portal. No price, no season and no kind of bed are published, and the alp's old website no longer loads, so call before you go and settle all three on the phone. Late in September, ask too whether the alp is still occupied.9
A bed with half board: Alp Grat. The Korporation describes the high route from the Brüsti cable car "via Alp Grat und Gitschentaler-Boden zur Alp Honegg". Alp Grat sits on a narrow ridge at 1'890 m in Attinghausen, 45 minutes above the Brüsti top station on the path to the Surenenpass. The Herger-Arnold family keeps 24 beds in three rooms of eight, asks you to bring a hut sleeping bag and charges CHF 59 for half board, CHF 29 for children aged 4 to 9 and CHF 39 from 10 to 16. It is open during the alp season, July to September, with reservations by phone, 078 745 95 57; the alp phone, 041 870 19 60, needs to ring for a while. A hiking club's route sheet gives about four and a quarter hours for the whole walk from Brüsti to Gitschenberg via Alp Grat.9
Rooms at the Brüsti top station. The Berggasthaus Brüsti in Attinghausen, at the top of the Brüsti cable car, has rooms and a restaurant, open Tuesday to Sunday and every day for overnight guests, 041 871 00 11. The last cable car down leaves at 19:00, and night runs can be arranged.9
In the valley. Hotel Rössli in the centre of Seedorf, Dorfstrasse 49, 041 870 25 26, check-in until 21:00, with the bus at the door. The nearest campsite, Camping Windsurfing Urnersee in Flüelen, is open from mid-April to the end of August and closed until next season.9
A tent on Gitschenberg itself. The only lawful route is the alp family's yes, asked in person during the alp season; a no is final. Nothing published suggests they offer it. If the answer is yes, they choose the spot, and it is never the fenced fen or the litter meadows by the huts.27
The cable car, fire and the hunt
The cable car runs at any time during the alp season, from the end of May to the end of August, a single four-seat cabin; the rest of the year you call the Arnold family first, 041 871 10 62, and prices are on request. Its valley station, Turmmatt, is next to the bus stop "Seedorf UR, Schloss A Pro". Do not plan on parking there: the spaces at the cable car are signed "Parkieren verboten", "ausgenommen Berechtigte mit Parkkarte", permit holders only. Marked paths also climb the 935 m from Seedorf on foot, through the forest.10
Fire. Uri bans fire in the forest and within 50 m of its edge, prepared fire rings and barbecues included: a ban of 2 July 2026 that still stood when the canton eased its fire rules on 25 August. The July release also banned fire on unbuilt fire places in the rest of the canton. Since 23 September 2026 the federal forest-fire warning for Uri has stood at "Grosse Gefahr", high danger, level 4 of 5. The clearing is ringed by forest. Take a stove.10
The hunt. Gitschenberg is not a hunting sanctuary. Uri's second red-deer block runs from 28 to 30 September 2026 and the small-game season from 12 October to 30 November; expect hunters in the forest on those days.10
Where you can legally sleep
- Alp Honegg. 1'427 m, 20 minutes on foot from the Gitschenberg top station, up to five overnight guests on the alp. Roger Gisler, 079 363 79 61; ask for price and season.9
- Alp Grat. 1'890 m, Attinghausen, 45 minutes above the Brüsti top station on the high route, 24 beds, half board CHF 59, July to September, 078 745 95 57.9
- Berggasthaus Brüsti. Rooms at the Brüsti top station in Attinghausen, 041 871 00 11.9
- Hotel Rössli, Seedorf. In the village, at the bus stop, 041 870 25 26, check-in until 21:00.9
- Not in the yard at Gitschenberg. A working alp at a cable-car station, on a foundation's private land, with no night on offer; never on the fen or the litter meadows by the huts.23
- Not on Gitschenen above Isenthal. Camping is banned in the core zones of RB 10.5114, with a CHF 150 fixed fine on the spot.5
General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which near Gitschenberg means a place at Alp Honegg or Alp Grat, or a tent the alp family has said yes to. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense on a small alp where a family works all summer.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Uri's parliament has asked for a cantonal act on wild camping, which could change the rules. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves.
