Wild camping at the Alplersee
One night at the Alplersee is legal. No federal, cantonal or communal rule reaches a tent here, and the owner of the lake and its whole bowl, Korporation Uri, permits camping on its ground in writing, no registration needed. The catch is the ground: the lake is a national amphibian breeding site, and its only flat shore is the toads' meadow. The tent goes on the south-east bay, 30 metres back from the water.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
The owner has said yes in writing, and the land register says it owns the lake
On most Swiss mountains you sleep on silence: no rule against you, nobody who said yes. At the Alplersee there is somebody who said yes. The lake, its shores, the Alplen bowl and the forest north of it are Grundbuch Sisikon parcel 250, six and a half square kilometres named "Alplen, Alpler See, Alpler Wald" and so on up to the Rophaien and the Spilau, and the owner entered there is Korporation Uri, the canton's largest landowner. The forest parcel north of the lake, number 190, has the same owner. That is not an inference from an alp list; it is the land register, read on 20 September 2026.3

In English: in the canton of Uri there is no general ban on wild camping, and on Korporation Uri ground camping is therefore in principle permitted and needs no registration. The conditions are short and the article takes each one seriously: observe the rules of nature and landscape protection zones, spare the pastures, make contact with the alp staff if your spot is near a farmed alp, tell the Korporation in advance if you stay more than three nights or come with more than ten people, pack your rubbish out in the charged bags, and accept that the Korporation is not liable for weather or livestock. The permission names its own exceptions, which is what makes it credible: the commune of Göschenen, where the official campsite must be used, and the Seewlisee area, permit in advance only. Neither is anywhere near this lake, and the Korporation's own eight-sheet "Zeltverbot" atlas has no sheet for the Alplersee or for Sisikon.4
Why this matters more here than on a summit. The Alplersee sits at 1'506 metres in a forest bowl, well below the treeline, and below the treeline this series is strict: a night in the woods is discouraged unless a named landowner permits that exact ground. Here the landowner is named, the ground is its ground by the register, and the permission has no forest or altitude carve-out. The one condition that could bite, "in nature and landscape protection zones observe the relevant rules", has nothing to attach to at this lake, because no such rules exist for it. That is the next section.34
Three protection labels sit on this lake, and none of them is about your tent
Ask the federal geoportal what lies at the lake and it answers twice: the amphibian inventory and the forest reserves. Ask the canton and it answers a third time: the hunting sanctuary. All three are real instruments. None of them reaches a camper, and saying why is the whole value of this report.16
1. Amphibian breeding site of national importance UR104 "Alpler See". Listed in 2001, sector A only, 3.84 hectares, which is the lake and its immediate shore; the object sheet gives the common toad a population class of 4, "very large", the common frog 3, and calls an alpine newt likely. The federal ordinance behind the inventory, the AlgV, is written to the cantons: the objects "sind ... ungeschmälert ... zu erhalten" (Art. 6 Abs. 1), "die Kantone treffen ... die zur Erreichung des Schutzziels geeigneten Schutz- und Unterhaltsmassnahmen" (Art. 8 Abs. 1), within seven years of listing (Art. 9). A word scan of the whole ordinance finds no tent, no camping, no bivouac, no overnight, no "betreten". What binds a visitor is whatever the canton enacts on top.12
And Uri has enacted nothing for this lake. Its register of protection reglements was walked by number, twenty-three acts from RB 10.5101 to 10.5135, every text scanned for the lake's names and for camping words. "Alpler", "Alplen" and "Sisikon" score zero in all of them. The acts that do ban tents each name their own ground: the Reussdelta, the Maderanertal, the Urnerboden, Gitschenen, the Bäz, the Rüti floodplain and so on. The control that makes this zero load-bearing is that Uri does write exactly this kind of decree when it wants to: in September 2024 it protected the amphibian site Bodenwald in Attinghausen, and that reglement reads like a camping ban should read.5

The cantonal fixed-penalty list follows the same logic. Its item 2.1 puts CHF 150 on "Lagern, Zelten oder Campieren in Schutzzonen", but only "in Verbindung mit dem jeweiligen Reglement", and there is no reglement for this lake to connect to. The cantonal nature-protection act's own fine, up to CHF 5'000 under Art. 34, is for breaching "Schutzmassnahmen", and none exist here; its inventory, which does list the lake, "hat hinweisenden Charakter" (Art. 19). The federal act's criminal article needs someone who "zerstört oder schwer beschädigt" a protected biotope, which a tent thirty metres from the water does not do. The commune adds nothing: Sisikon's zoning order lists "NS 01 Alplersee, Amphibienlaichgebiet, national" in its annex with the columns for protection goal and measures left blank, exactly as its Art. 24 Abs. 3 says national objects are listed "zur Information", and the commune has no police reglement and no camping act at all. The property cadastre of the parcel confirms it: 116 restrictions on the parcel, all point-tested, and the nearest nature-protection measure is 1.7 kilometres away on the Spilau side.257
2. The cantonal hunting sanctuary Alplen-Riemenstalden. The Uri hunting rules ban the hunt "in den kantonalen Banngebieten gemäss Anhang 2", and Annex 2 draws this one from Alplen along the marked path to Spilau, up over the Hundstock, the Siwfass and the Diepen to the Rophaien, over the Blutstöckli and the Butzenstock and back down to Alplen: 476 hectares, and the lake is inside, its northern edge 300 metres north of the water. The text has no tent, no camping, no bivouac and no access clause; its one "betreten" is a hunter entering with a rifle. It binds hunters. It is not a federal Jagdbanngebiet, so the federal camping ban and its CHF 150 tariff, which this series cites for the Kiental or the Urirotstock, do not apply here; the nearest federal reserve is the Urirotstock, 6.7 kilometres away across the lake.6
3. The Rophaien forest reserve. The 2010 government decree that created it is a bundle of fifty-year forestry servitudes on the owners, Korporation Uri among them, compensated by canton and Confederation. It contains no visitor, camping, fire or access provision, and a servitude on the owners cannot bind a hiker. It binds the owners' chainsaws, not a tent.8
Two things this section does not say. It does not say the amphibian site is decoration: the toads are real, the shore meadow is theirs, and the next section keeps the tent off it. And it does not say the situation is permanent. The cantonal inventory sheet for the lake could not be read (the file returns an error), Sisikon's inventory has been "in Überarbeitung" since 2024, and a decree in the Bodenwald mould could follow. The date at the top of this page is the date the register was walked.57
The pin is water, the flat meadow is the toads' meadow, the tent goes on the south-east bay
The map pin for "Alpler See" sits in the middle of the lake, 59 metres from the nearest shore, so the first job is to find dry ground. A slope scan of the 450 metres around the lake, with the water masked, finds twenty cells at or under seven degrees, and almost all of them are one place: the meadow on the east shore, 0.2 to 2.6 degrees at 1'507 metres, 25 to 80 metres from the water. On the elevation model it is the obvious pitch. On the ground it is the one place not to.9
The east-shore meadow is the core of the amphibian site. All of it lies inside sector A of object UR104. The federal land-cover statistics class it as "Nassstandorte", wet ground; the communal plan has it as "Reservezone, unproduktiv"; and the canton's agricultural layer maps it as a "Streuefläche mit Naturschutzvertrag im Sömmerungsgebiet", 5'954 square metres of litter meadow under a nature-protection contract, mown on 1 September every second year. The orthophoto shows the brown wet centre of a Riedwiese with a trodden line across it to the water. Wet under a mat, and the one piece of this lake the toads and the newts actually depend on. Never there.19
The tent goes on the south-east bay. Above the small bay on the south-east side of the lake is a dry shelf of grass, scattered bushes and boulders between the water and the spruce: 2.0 degrees at 1'511 metres, LV95 2'692'658 / 1'198'946, about 100 metres from the pin, 32 metres from the water, 120 metres off the path, in the communal agricultural zone and on the summer pasture of the Alplen alp. The amphibian site's boundary runs only 10 to 20 metres back from the water on this side, so the shelf is just outside it. Big enough for one tent. The rule that keeps you right is simple: on the south-east bay, 30 metres or more back from the water. A stonier pocket next door, 28 metres from the shore, is the same shelf.9
Two more honest notes on the ground. The other cells the scan liked, 230 to 250 metres north-east and north of the lake, are forest floor under an open stand or in the closed spruce: lawful on the same owner's ground, and nobody's choice over the shelf, and this report does not send anyone into the reserve forest to sleep. And the "Seeplangg", the grass slope above the lake that the herd grazes up to in late summer, is a Plangg, a steep flank, with no cell under ten degrees on it. If the shelf is taken or the herd is on it, the next flat ground is the Alplen "Ebene" around the huts, 600 to 900 metres east-north-east and 120 metres lower, four to five degrees, summer pasture of the same alp with buildings 50 to 150 metres away: a tip with a condition, which is the hello in the next section.910
Around the lake there is no building within 400 metres. The nearest are the Butzen huts, 418 metres west-south-west, the Äbnet huts, 653 metres south-east, and the Alplen huts, 677 metres east-north-east. The marked path runs along the north side of the east meadow, about 100 metres from the pin, to a signpost at 1'547 metres north-west of the lake where the routes to Butzen and to Riemenstalden part. No winter closure touches the lake: Uri's only wildlife rest zone on this mountain, Hüttenboden, lies 2.1 kilometres south on the Eggberge flank, and the federal rest-zone layer is empty here.69
The alp, the way in, fire and the hunt
The alp. The lake is the top of Alp Ebnet/Alplen, Alpkataster 1217/55/1, 107 hectares, an Unterstafel shared by five operations with more than a hundred cows. The Korporation's own alp portal describes the season: the herds graze first on the Ebene by the huts, then higher and higher "die «Seeplangg» hinauf bis zum Alplersee". An Unterstafel is grazed at the start and the end of the alp summer, so in September expect cattle on the slope and at the water, and electric fences. The five tenant families are published with their numbers on the portal: Sandra and André Bissig-Briker 078 801 97 61, Agnes and Franz-Heiri Furrer-Gisler 079 567 45 64, Monika and Kari Gisler-Zwyer 079 716 19 14, Yvonne and Beat Stadler 079 298 56 01, Yvonne and Andreas Stadler 079 705 42 28. The Oberstafel Äbnet above the lake is the Stadlers' (079 298 56 01), the Stockalp and its Butzen huts to the west are Sonja and Max Albert-Epp's (079 722 56 65). Nobody charges for a night, and no arrangement to charge for one surfaced anywhere; the Korporation's condition is a hello if you are near a working alp, and the shelf is 400 metres from the nearest hut. If you use the Ebene instead, you are 50 metres from someone's door: ask which corner.10
The way in. From Sisikon station the AAGS bus 541 climbs to Riemenstalden in ten minutes (Langrüti) and on to Chäppeliberg in twenty-three; on a September Saturday it leaves Sisikon at 07:45, 08:45, 12:08, 15:08 and 16:08. From the village at 1'050 metres a steep path reaches the Alplen huts in a short hour and the lake in about an hour and a half, 460 metres of climb. From Sisikon itself, at 435 metres, count two and three-quarter hours over Butzen or Stock. The Chäppeliberg cable car to Spilau runs to timetable, 16 September to 30 October from 08:00 to 17:00, CHF 10 up, 16 return, cash only, with a notice of its own that sleeping in the top or bottom station is not allowed; from its top station the forest path over the Alplen huts to the lake is about as long as the village path and flatter. From the lake the Rophaien summit is another hour and a half past the Stockalp huts. Sisikon charges a visitor's tax of CHF 1.50 per person and night; no case of a bivouac being charged it has surfaced.11
Fire: none. Uri eased its summer fire ban on 25 August 2026 but kept two rules that cover this lake completely: no fire in the forest or within 50 metres of the forest edge, and no fire on unbuilt fire rings anywhere in the canton, with a fine for breaches. The fire rings people report at the lake sit on a shore edged by spruce on every side but the meadow, and they are unbuilt. On top of that the federal warning layer has had Uri at "Grosse Gefahr", level 4, since 18 September. Stove only.12
The hunt and the toads. The sanctuary is closed to hunting, with a reserved power to open it for the deer hunt; outside its northern edge, 300 metres from the water, the Riemenstalden flank is ordinary hunting ground on the Uri dates: high hunt block one 7 to 19 September, block two 28 to 30 September, low hunt 12 October to 30 November 2026. Wear something visible on those days. The toads spawn in spring after the ice goes, at this height roughly May and June, the young leave the water in summer and linger on the shore, and the adults walk out to their winter quarters from about mid-October. Late September is a quiet month for them, and the shore strip is still theirs: 30 metres back, no soap in the lake, no fire.612
Where you can legally sleep
- The south-east bay shelf. Grass, bushes and boulders above the small bay on the south-east side, LV95 2'692'658 / 1'198'946, 1'511 m, 2 degrees, about 100 m from the map pin and 32 m from the water, 30 m or more back from the shore and outside the amphibian site. Korporation Uri ground, standing permission, no registration, no fee. One tent.39
- The Alplen Ebene. The flat pasture around the Alplen huts, 1'380 to 1'400 m, 600 to 900 m east-north-east of the lake, 4 to 5 degrees, the same alp and the same owner. Buildings 50 to 150 m away: ask a tenant family which corner (numbers above).10
- The Spilauersee. 3.3 km east-south-east at 1'837 m, above the treeline, a serviced alp with huts, an alp bar and six mattress places, and our own report's verdict: legal for a night, pitch back from the huts, say a word to the Senn.11
- Lidernenhütte SAC. 1'727 m, 2.9 km east of the lake above the Chäppeliberg cable car, 85 places, half board CHF 78 for SAC members and 95 for others, summer season from 13 May 2026, reservation required, 041 820 29 70.11
- Gasthaus Kaiserstock, Riemenstalden. Rooms and a restaurant in the village at 1'050 m, an hour and a half below the lake, 041 820 10 32, cash only. Sisikon's hotels on the Axenstrasse for a valley night.11
General rules for wild camping
This matters more where the answer is yes than where it is no. Nobody in Uri has ever needed a camping rule for this lake, and the Korporation publishes conditions instead of prohibitions. The list below is not law. It is the reason the answer above stays yes, and the reason the toads keep their meadow.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. - Terrain, 20 September 2026: swissALTI3D via the federal profile service on a 25 m grid over 450 m around the pin, the lake masked with the OpenStreetMap water ring (way 234341205, 97 nodes, 1.96 ha); the pin lies 59 m inside the water. Twenty dry cells at or under 7 degrees, of which the east-shore meadow cells (0.2 to 2.6 degrees, 1'507 m, 25 to 80 m from the shore, 110 to 160 m east to east-north-east of the pin) all lie inside amphibian sector A; the south-east bay shelf cell at 2'692'658 / 1'198'946 (2.0 degrees, 1'511 m, 103 m from the pin on bearing 104, 32 m from the water) lies 6 m outside sector A, with the A boundary 10 to 20 m back from the water on that side by a 10 m fine grid; its neighbour 2'692'633 / 1'198'921 (3.7 degrees, 28 m from the shore, 18 m outside A). Cells 230 to 250 m north-east and north (3.4 to 5.4 degrees) are forest floor.
