What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. Wild camping on the Moléson: a cable-car summit on a small rock cap

Wild camping on the Moléson means the top of the mountain above Gruyères and Bulle, where the cable car from Plan-Francey ends; a funicular climbs to Plan-Francey from the village of Moléson-sur-Gruyères. The federal gazetteer calls the summit "Le Moléson": 2'002 m, LV95 2'567'670 / 1'155'368, in the commune of Gruyères, canton Fribourg. Haut-Intyamon begins 325 m south of the summit and Semsales about 600 m west-south-west, and the three communes meet at the cross on the crest, at 1'938 m. The Teysachaux further along that crest and La Vudalla on the Intyamon side have their own reports.1

Ask the first question before any law: if a night up here were lawful, would anyone lie down on this ground? The summit point sits on a small cap of rock and grass with three benches and a survey marker, and the marked path from the top station runs across it. Within 50 m of the top barely 175 m² is flatter than 10 degrees, half the ground is steeper than 35 degrees, and east of the cap the face drops away at around 50 degrees. A 25 m telecommunication mast stands 66 m north of the summit point, with a second antenna beside it.1

About 190 m south-south-east, just below the top, are the top station of the cable car and the building of the restaurant Le Sommet with its observatory: 135 seats inside and 240 on the terrace. The cable car runs every day until 1 November 2026, and on an ordinary day the last cabin leaves the summit at 17:50. On Friday and Saturday evenings it runs until 23:00, because the restaurant holds "Vins et tapas au Sommet" every Friday until 30 October and "Soirées burgers au Sommet" every Saturday until 31 October, both from 18:00.17

So the summit is a lift station with a restaurant, a mast and a rock cap, and on two evenings a week it is busy until late. It fails the first test on every count, and that, not a ban, is why the answer for the summit is no.1

The law at the summit: a tent permit for communal public ground

Gruyères has one rule that asks anything of a tent. It sits in the commune's police regulation, adopted in 2018, revised in 2021 and approved in its current form on 20 May 2022, in the chapter on the use of the communal public domain:2

"Sont notamment soumis à autorisations les usages accrus suivants: a) l'installation de caravanes, de mobile-homes ou d'autres installations (tentes)"Règlement général de police of the commune of Gruyères, art. 15 al. 1 lit. a. In English: the following increased uses in particular require an authorisation: a) setting up caravans, mobile homes or other installations (tents).

The wording names tents and does not name a bivouac. What matters more is where it applies. Article 15 governs the increased use of the communal public domain, and Fribourg's public domain act draws that domain narrowly: the buildings of the communal administration, the things the commune has assigned to common use and fitted out for it, such as roads, squares and car parks, and ownerless things. On that ground, in Moléson-sur-Gruyères for example, a tent or a caravan needs the commune's permit, and without one the council can fine you CHF 20 to 1'000 under article 30. The same regulation bans unnecessary noise on the public domain from 22:00 to 06:00, and fire on it without authorisation.2

The summit is not communal public ground. Its parcel is private land, and the zone plan of 2005 lists the parcels of the top station and of the mast as company land. Article 15 therefore reaches neither the summit, nor the station, nor the pasture around them, with a tent or without one.2

Above the commune there is no ban either. Fribourg has no cantonal camping ban: its acts mention tents only for commercial campsites, the tourist tax and trade licences. At federal level the summit lies outside every game reserve, wildlife rest zone and federal inventory; the nearest game reserve, the Dent de Lys, is 2.2 km away. The only federal layer at the top is the label of the Parc naturel régional Gruyère Pays-d'Enhaut, a regional nature park that sets no rules for visitors. One change is on its way. From 1 July 2027 Fribourg's new ordinance on wildlife tranquillity zones bans camping, bivouacking and fires inside its zones during their protection periods, and one of the zones is called "Moléson". It is the forest of Le Devin, about 1.3 km north of the summit and below Plan-Francey, protected from 1 December to 31 July. It reaches neither the summit nor the crest, and the lift company already describes it on its website.6

The drinking-water zone: no campsites, and rules for how you behave

The summit point lies in zone S2 of the drinking-water protection zones for the Rio de l'Enfer and Petit Moléson springs, which belong to the commune of Gruyères; the canton approved them on 2 March 2005. The crest to the south-west lies in the zones of the Villard-Bony, Villard-Dessous and Incrotaz springs, S3 on the Haut-Intyamon side and S2 across the crest line. Both regulations carry the same use table. Under "Places de sport et de séjour", sports grounds and places to stay, it marks "Places de camping" and "Places pour caravanes et mobile-homes" as forbidden in S1, S2 and S3 alike, and a breach is punishable with a fine under the cantonal water act.3

Read as what it is, a table of land uses and installations listed next to sports grounds and caravan sites, it bans campsites. It never names a tent, a bivouac or a night, and a small tent that goes up at dusk and comes down at dawn is not a campsite. The same table covers the Teysachaux further along the crest.3

What the zone does decide is how you behave up here, on the summit and on the crest alike. No toilet stop anywhere near the top or your pitch: carry a bag and take it down. No soap, no washing up, no fire, and everything you bring up goes back down with you. You are sleeping on the ground that feeds somebody's tap.3

How it is possible: the grass saddle on the Crête du Moléson

The night with the view is on the Crête du Moléson, the grass ridge that runs south-west from the summit towards Tremetta and the Teysachaux. From the top station, follow the crest path west for about 600 m to the cross at 1'938 m, where Gruyères, Haut-Intyamon and Semsales meet, and go on about 150 m down the crest to a grass saddle at about 1'910 m: 10 to 15 minutes from the station, 750 m from the summit and 92 m lower. The lift company's crest hike, signposted as route 270, climbs the same ridge from Plan-Francey via Gros-Plané, Le Villard and Tremetta: 7.8 km, 700 m of ascent, 2 h 50.17

The pitch: grass saddle on the Crête du Moléson, LV95 2'567'030 / 1'154'955, WGS84 46.54507 / 7.00879, about 1'910 m, commune of Haut-Intyamon. Grazed pasture at 2 to 4 degrees, a few metres south-east of the marked path, with room for a bivvy bag or one small tent. Open all round except towards the summit, to the north-east. No water on the crest. The nearest alp chalet is 375 m away, the top station about 750 m.1

Why the saddle works where the summit does not. It is open pasture above the trees, with no building, lift or mast on it, and no rule stands in the way of one night. The saddle lies in Haut-Intyamon, and the Semsales boundary runs along the crest line a metre away. Haut-Intyamon has no police regulation, and its planning regulation does not mention camping, tents or caravans. Semsales has no police regulation either, and its planning regulation bans only living in caravans and other mobile homes; it never names a tent. Gruyères, 150 m away, is covered above. Châtel-Saint-Denis, whose planning regulation does confine tents to its camping zone, begins 1.4 km further south-west and does not reach this ground.4

How to do it. Come up late, pitch a few metres off the path on the south-east side, keep light and noise down, and be gone at first light: this is a hiking path, and in the hunting weeks people are out on it at dawn. The water rules above apply here too. There is no water on the crest; the nearest is the Bonne Fontaine spring, 380 m north-east and 105 m lower, a place to fill a bottle and not to camp, so bring what you will drink. The canton's landscape sheet for the Moléson and Teysachaux massif asks that its wild sectors keep "la quiétude de ces lieux" and "leur obscurité nocturne", their quiet and their darkness at night. It binds the authorities, not you, and it is a fair description of what a good night here looks like.39

Where not to sleep on the Moléson

  • The summit cap, the top station, the restaurant and the observatory. Built, lift-served and busy until 23:00 on Friday and Saturday evenings.17
  • The north ridge. The via ferrata routes top out there, the ground between is cliff band, and the few level metres lie beside the mast or between the cliff bands.1
  • The Bonne Fontaine hollow. The flattest ground near the summit, about 380 m west-south-west and 200 m lower, is the Bonne Fontaine spring and its wet basin, closed in by scree and cliff bands on every side but the north-west. It lies outside the water protection zones, and it is the spring itself.1
  • Plan-Francey. The middle station at 1'520 m is lifts, a restaurant and a hotel: sleep in the hotel.7
  • Moléson-sur-Gruyères. Roads, squares and car parks in the village are communal public ground, where a tent or a caravan needs the commune's permit under art. 15 of the police regulation.2

Lifts, hunting and fire in autumn 2026

The lifts. The funicular from Moléson-sur-Gruyères to Plan-Francey and the cable car to the summit run every day until 1 November 2026: the funicular from 09:00 to 18:00, the cable car every 20 minutes from 09:10, with the last cabin down from the summit at 17:50. On Friday and Saturday evenings both run on, with the last cabin down at 23:00 and the last funicular at 23:10. After 1 November the summer season is over, and the lifts stay shut until the winter season in December.7

Hunting. The summit and the crest are mountain hunting ground. In 2026 the chamois hunt runs until 3 October and again on 10 October, the red deer hunt from 19 to 31 October and from 14 to 30 November, never on Sundays, and hunting starts an hour before sunrise. In those weeks wear something bright and expect people on the crest at first light.5

Fire. Fribourg has had no fire restriction in force since 11 September 2026. Up here, light none anyway: it is drinking-water ground, and a gas stove does the job.53

  • The grass saddle on the Crête du Moléson, about 1'910 m. 2'567'030 / 1'154'955, 750 m south-west of the summit in Haut-Intyamon. One night, late in and early out, water carried up, no fire.14
  • Hôtel de montagne Plan-Francey, 1'520 m. Nine double rooms and 51 beds in family rooms and dormitories from CHF 47 a night, breakfast extra, open on Friday and Saturday nights only, on the lift timetable; plan-francey@moleson.ch. About 1 km from the summit and 480 m lower.7
  • Cabane des Clés, 1'352 m. The hut of the Swiss Alpine Club's La Gruyère section, 20 places, CHF 25 a night for non-members and CHF 20 for SAC and UIAA members, staffed at weekends and in the school holidays until the end of October; cles@cas-gruyere.ch, 079 625 17 07. 2.2 km north of the summit.8
  • Auberge La Pierre à Catillon, Moléson-sur-Gruyères, 1'100 m. Seven rooms from CHF 80 a night, open all year.7
  • Camping Les Sapins, Epagny. The campsite at Epagny in the commune of Gruyères, for tents, caravans and camper vans, open until 31 October.8
  • Not on the summit, the north ridge or at Bonne Fontaine. A built lift summit, cliff bands and a spring.1

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which here means the crest and never the built summit. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense on a ridge that is also somebody's drinking water.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The verdict covers the summit of the Moléson in the commune of Gruyères: the summit cap, the cable-car top station, the restaurant Le Sommet and the observatory. It rests on the terrain, the buildings and the lift timetable, not on a ban: the police regulation of Gruyères reaches tents only on communal public ground, and the cantonal and federal texts cited below contain no camping ban for this ground. The grass saddle on the Crête du Moléson in Haut-Intyamon is a tip, not the verdict. That the drinking-water zone rules ban campsites and not a tent for one night is a reading of their wording; no decision on a single night is known. Who owns the summit parcel today is not public online. The lifts, beds, prices, events and hunting dates are taken from their publishers as of September 2026, and all of it can change. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Frequently asked questions

Can I camp on the Moléson?
Not on the summit. The top of the Moléson, 2'002 metres in the commune of Gruyères, canton Fribourg, is a cable-car summit: the top station and the restaurant Le Sommet stand about 190 metres from the summit point, a 25-metre telecom mast 66 metres, and the summit itself is a small rock cap with benches, where barely 175 m² within 50 metres is flatter than 10 degrees. On Friday and Saturday evenings until the end of October the restaurant runs events and the last cabin leaves at 23:00. No federal, cantonal or communal rule forbids a single night there: Gruyères' police regulation (art. 15) requires a permit for tents only on communal public ground, and the summit is private land. That is why the verdict reads "Not allowed" and not "Illegal": the place rules it out, not a ban. For the night with the view, walk 750 metres south-west along the crest to the grass saddle at about 1'910 metres in Haut-Intyamon.
Where can I sleep with the view instead?
On the Crête du Moléson. From the summit, walk about 750 metres south-west along the crest path, past the cross at 1'938 metres where Gruyères, Haut-Intyamon and Semsales meet, to the grass saddle at LV95 2'567'030 / 1'154'955, about 1'910 metres, in Haut-Intyamon. Fribourg has no cantonal camping ban, Haut-Intyamon and Semsales have no police regulation, and their planning regulations never name a tent, so no rule reaches one night there. Pitch a few metres off the path, arrive late, leave at first light, and carry your water: there is none on the crest. It is a drinking-water catchment, so no fire, no soap and no latrine. With a roof: the Hôtel de montagne Plan-Francey at 1'520 metres, from CHF 47 a night, on Friday and Saturday nights.
Is a bivvy bag on the summit OK?
It does not change the answer. Gruyères' police regulation names tents, not bivouacs, and only for communal public ground, so no rule reaches a bivvy bag on the summit either. The problem is the place: a rock cap with benches and a marked path across it, a telecom mast 66 metres away, the top station and the restaurant 190 metres away, and people up there until 23:00 on Friday and Saturday evenings. The summit also lies in the drinking-water protection zone S2 of Gruyères' Rio de l'Enfer and Petit Moléson springs, which rules out a latrine, soap and fire. A bivvy bag belongs on the grass saddle 750 metres south-west on the crest.
Does the drinking-water zone ban camping?
It bans campsites, and it never names a tent. What changes in 2027?
On 1 July 2027 Fribourg's ordinance on wildlife tranquillity zones (OZdT, RSF 922.31) comes into force. Inside its zones, during their protection periods, camping, bivouacking and fires outside designated places are forbidden (art. 3), with fines of up to CHF 3'000 under the cantonal hunting act. One zone is called "Moléson", but it is the forest of Le Devin, about 1.3 kilometres north of the summit below Plan-Francey, protected from 1 December to 31 July. It reaches neither the summit nor the Crête du Moléson. Look at the zone maps again after 1 July 2027.

On the annex map the zone is the forest of Le Devin (Le Devin d'Avau and Le Devin d'Amont), between about 1'200 and 1'400 m, its nearest edge about 1.3 km north of the summit, 0.5 km north of the Plan-Francey hotel and 2.2 km from the crest saddle. The lift company already presents it as the "Zone de tranquillité 'Le Devin'", 37 hectares.
