Wild camping on the Teysachaux
A night on the Teysachaux is allowed, as long as you stay on the Semsales side. Nothing in Semsales reaches a tent. Châtel-Saint-Denis begins 2.7 metres south of the summit cross and allows tents only inside its camping zone, four kilometres away.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
A summit with a line over it, and where you can lie down
The Teysachaux is a grass cone of 1'909 metres on the ridge east of the Moléson, above Les Paccots and Semsales in the Fribourg Prealps. There is a cross on top and a marked path passes two metres from it. It is a walk-up summit, well above the last trees, and the alpages of Belle Chaux and Vieille Chaux spread out below it to the south.1
What decides this article is a boundary, and it runs over the top. The gazetteer point sits in Semsales. Châtel-Saint-Denis begins 2.7 metres south of it, and it is 3.5 m south-west, 4.3 m south-east, 4.9 m west and 9.2 m north-west. North is Semsales for two kilometres. Haut-Intyamon, a third commune, comes to within 355 metres due east. In other words the summit is on the line, and a tent pitched on the top would straddle two communes that answer this question differently.6
The summit is also not much of a pitch. On a 10 metre grid the dome reads 11.2 degrees. A coarser 25 metre grid smooths it to 7.3, which is a resolution artefact rather than a bench, and it is worth naming because that number is the one a quick scan hands you. There is no water within 647 metres either.6
The ground that works is the shelf below to the north-east. At 2'566'270 / 1'153'900, 1'692.6 metres, the slope drops to 1.4 degrees, and the reason to take that spot rather than a closer one is the margin: it has 186.8 metres of Semsales in every direction, it is 188 metres off the path and 586 metres from the nearest water. Within 280 metres of the summit it is the only Semsales ground under 15 degrees. Everything gentler and closer belongs to Châtel-Saint-Denis.6
One place on the map is worth not walking into. The Creux de l'Ours is a 1.6 kilometre gully cutting north-west off the ridge, and its head touches the summit point within nine metres. It is a fall line, not a hollow to shelter in.1
The Semsales side: the only camping article, and it is about caravans
Semsales publishes 28 regulations and has no police regulation at all, and no communal police corps. The one camping provision in the whole collection sits in the urbanism regulation, and it is the sentence this verdict turns on.3

In English: the use for dwelling of caravans, mobile homes and other mobile dwellings is prohibited across the whole communal territory.
Read the subject and the verb, because both matter. The subject is a genus of wheeled and mobile dwellings, and tents are not named anywhere in the Semsales regulation. The verb is "utilisation pour l'habitation", use for dwelling, which is living somewhere rather than sleeping one night. A small tent that goes up at dusk and comes down at dawn is neither of those things. The article does not reach the case, and no other Semsales instrument does either.3
That text had to be read as an image to be read at all, which is worth saying because it is exactly how a check like this goes wrong. The regulation in force is published as a scan with a thirty-character text layer, so an automated search of the file returns nothing and reports the commune as silent. It is not silent, it just says something about caravans.3
A currency note that changes nothing: Semsales adopted a fully revised local plan on 22 July 2024, and it is deposited with the canton awaiting final approval rather than in force. Its article 43 repeats the caravan wording word for word, so approval would not move this answer.3
Above Semsales there is nothing either. Fribourg has no cantonal camping prohibition: eight cantonal acts were read with live article controls and score zero on every camping term, and the fixed-penalty ordinance carries no camping tariff at all. The federal layers are empty at the summit too, and that zero is worth having because an invalid layer name returns an error rather than an empty list. The wildlife rest zones deserve their own line: none here, and the same layer does return the La Berra zone at the Cousimbert, so it carries Fribourg and simply has nothing on this ridge.12
Three metres south: a rule that names tents
Châtel-Saint-Denis is the other half of this summit, and its answer is the opposite one. Its urbanism regulation, stamped 4 June 2019 and served as in force by the cantonal register, defines a camping zone and then writes one sentence about the rest of the commune.4
"L'implantation de tentes et de caravanes est possible uniquement dans la zone de camping."Règlement communal d'urbanisme, commune de Châtel-Saint-Denis, art. 18 "Zone camping (CA)", ch. 2 "Prescriptions". In English: tents and caravans may be sited only in the camping zone.
It names tents, and it is exclusive. The sentence sits inside the article that defines the camping zone, but its wording is a siting rule for the whole commune: tents go only there. The zone in question is a commercial campsite on the Route des Paccots, about four kilometres from the summit, and it is called Camping Le Bivouac, which is either funny or unhelpful depending on where you are standing.4
What it would actually cost is less than the number suggests. Article 58 of the same regulation routes contraventions to article 173 of the cantonal planning act, which sets a fine of up to CHF 50'000. Do not read that as a camper's tariff. It is the ceiling of a construction-offence provision aimed at illegal building, and there is no fixed-penalty tariff for this anywhere: the cantonal fixed-penalty ordinance scores zero on every camping term, and neither commune publishes a schedule of its own. The realistic outcome of a tent on the Châtel side is being asked to strike it. Châtel-Saint-Denis does have a communal police, on 021 948 22 17; Semsales does not.4
And this is why the pitch is the shelf and not the summit. Nobody standing on that dome can tell which commune they are in, because the line exists on the map and nowhere on the ground. Two hundred metres of margin solves a problem that three metres does not.6
How to do it right, and what changes in 2027
Nothing conditions the night on the Semsales side, so there is no one to ask and no fee to pay. Two things are still worth knowing before you go.
The first is that the canton looked at this ridge in 2026 and will look again. Fribourg adopted a new ordinance on wildlife tranquillity zones on 24 June 2026, and from 1 July 2027 its article 3 says plainly that inside those zones "it is prohibited to camp, to bivouac and to light fires". None of its thirteen perimeters reaches the Teysachaux. Pro Natura said publicly that it regretted the omission of La Tremetta, 610 metres from this summit, calling it one of the most important black grouse breeding sites in the canton. So the ground was considered and left out, and that is a decision that can be revisited. Check this article again after 1 July 2027.5
The second is the black grouse itself, which is the reason that debate happened. This is exactly the kind of open ridge where they display and breed, they are most vulnerable at dawn and dusk, and dawn and dusk is precisely when a bivouac is on the ground. Pitch late, strike early, keep to the shelf, and do not wander the crest in the half light.5
On ownership, an honest blank. Semsales leases its alpages on published six-year terms, and the lease conditions of 16 December 2019 forbid sub-letting and keep the chalets communal, but no tenant could be named for any alp on this ridge, so this article names none. If you read somewhere that these alpages belong to Bellechasse, that claim is a search-engine invention and does not survive contact with the commune's own documents.7

None of them has to give you permission, because nothing requires it on Semsales ground. They are the people who know the ridge, the stock on it and the weather coming over the Moléson.
There is no prohibition sign on this mountain, and none was found on any approach. What the commune builds instead are self-closing gates through the alp fences, which tells you the arrangement here is about keeping stock in rather than keeping people out. For what it is worth as colour, the Moléson section of the Swiss Alpine Club ran a listed club bivouac on the Teysachaux on 22 and 23 August 2025, sleeping out at Tremetta on Semsales ground, with no permission and no fee mentioned anywhere in the listing.7
General rules for wild camping
One side of this summit gives you the night, so the rest is on you. On a ridge where the black grouse breeds and the commune line is three metres wide, leaving no trace and staying on the right side of the map are the same discipline.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Legal here describes the summit point and the Semsales ground north and east of it, where a checked absence runs at four levels. It does not describe the southern and western half of the dome, which is Châtel-Saint-Denis, where a regulation names tents and confines them to the camping zone. The boundary was measured against the current federal boundary record, and swisstopo puts the positional accuracy of that product at half a metre.
The CHF 50'000 in the Châtel chain is the ceiling of a construction-offence provision, not a camper's tariff, and no fixed-penalty schedule for camping exists in either commune or in the cantonal ordinance.
The new cantonal ordinance on wildlife tranquillity zones enters into force on 1 July 2027 and prohibits camping and bivouacking inside its perimeters. None of them reaches this summit today. Follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves.
