Wild camping on La Vudalla

La Vudalla is the 1'669 m grass crest above Enney, the walk-up summit between the Intyamon valley and the Moléson, three marked paths meeting at a signpost. Nothing forbids a night there: every federal layer is empty, Fribourg has no camping law, and the commune's tent rule governs its roads, not its pasture. What the crest does carry is Enney's drinking water, which decides how you behave, not whether you may.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. What La Vudalla is: a grass crest cut into the forest, and where you can lie down

Wild camping on La Vudalla is a question for people who have walked up from Enney station, 717 m, through La Léchire and the Vudaletta alp to the col chalet at 1'450 m and along the crest to the yellow signpost at LV95 2'570'174 / 1'155'759, 1'669 m: about 4.9 km and 950 m in two and a half to three hours. From the Moléson side the Plan-Francey loop takes the crest from the west. It is the walk-up summit of the Intyamon's west flank, a named point on the map with a cross, three routes meeting on top, and "crête effilée ne présentant aucun danger" in the tourist office's words.11

The pin itself is not the pitch. The gazetteer point sits on the north lip of the crest, 18 to 21 degrees depending on the grid, exactly where the swissTLM3D forest polygon begins: spruce 1.2 m north, 2.5 m north-west, 5 m west. Dense forest covers the whole north and east flank at summit height, so this is a pastoral crest cut into the trees, not an alpine ridge above them. Behind the path the crest opens into a flat grass strip about 70 m long and 55 to 60 m wide: the true high point 30 m east reads 4.6 degrees on a 10 m grid, and 2'570'144 / 1'155'744, 1'666.6 m, 30 m south-west of the point, reads 1.6 degrees, 10 m south of the path, with the forest 5 to 15 m north of it and the open meadow running south. Two buildings stand within 500 m, the working alp chalet La Vudalla 46 at 1'454 m, 375 m south-east and 200 m lower, and a barn 379 m south; the nearest stream head is 389 m away, so carry water up. Hikers report cattle, electric fences and a summit board, and no prohibition sign on any of the three approaches.11113

Four levels of law, and none of them names this ground

Federal. At the pin the identify sweep returns one thing, the Parc naturel régional Gruyère Pays-d'Enhaut, and that is a label: the park is an association under a charter, its camping sheet is headed "Recommandations, MERCI de" and its list of legal constraints names federal game reserves, cantonal nature reserves and two Vaud communes, not one Fribourg commune. Everything else is empty: no game reserve (no. 25 Dent de Lys is 2'916 m away), no wildlife rest zone within 3 km, no BLN, mire, floodplain, amphibian or bird object, no forest reserve, no military perimeter, with the failing-layer control and two positive controls passing.19

Canton. Fribourg has no camping or bivouac prohibition: thirteen acts read in full with live controls, from the communes act and the fixed-penalty ordinance through hunting, nature, forest, water and planning law, carry no such term; the forest act guarantees access on foot and lets the service ban fires, nothing more. The one rest zone in force today is La Berra, 18.7 km away. The new rest-zone ordinance adopted on 24 June 2026 and in force from 1 July 2027 does say, for the first time in Fribourg, "il est interdit de camper, de bivouaquer et de faire du feu hors emplacements réservés à cet effet", but only inside its thirteen perimeters during their protection periods, and the two nearest are the Moléson north flank, 2.2 km west-north-west, closed 1 December to 31 July, and the Dent de Lys, 2.9 km south-west, closed 1 November to 31 January. The canton looked at this massif in 2026 and did not zone La Vudalla.45

"Sont soumis à autorisations notamment les usages accrus suivants: a) l'installation de caravanes, de mobile-homes ou d'autres installations (tentes) en dehors des zones et places prévues à cet effet."Règlement général de police de Bas-Intyamon, Art. 14 al. 1 lit. a, approved 21 April 2026: caravans, motorhomes and other installations such as tents outside the places provided for them need an authorisation. The article sits under "Usages du domaine public".

Commune. This is the one sentence anyone can hold against a tent in Bas-Intyamon, and it matters what it governs. Art. 14 is an "usages accrus" article, the vocabulary of the cantonal act on the public domain, and the regulation defines the public domain by reference to that act, which confines it to the commune's administrative buildings and to things "affectées, par le fait ou par décision de la commune, à l'usage commun et aménagées par la commune à cette fin, telles que les infrastructures de mobilité". A leased alp is assigned to grazing and let to a farmer; it is the commune's private property, on which the commune acts as owner, not as police. So the permit rule binds the alp track, the road end at the chalet and the village squares, and does not reach the crest pasture. Breaches cost CHF 20 to 1'000 by penal order, and the fixed-penalty list covers only parking and dogs. The planning regulation adds nothing: its Art. 32 defines the camping zone at Enney for caravans, tents and mobile homes and, unlike Châtel-Saint-Denis on the Teysachaux, carries no "only in the camping zone" clause. Gruyères, whose line runs 614 m north-west of the summit, has the same model regulation with the same public-domain article; the pitch is 600 m inside Bas-Intyamon and the question does not arise.678

Owner. The 2002 cantonal register of alp chalets lists La Vudalla with the commune of Enney, now Bas-Intyamon, as owner and a local farmer as tenant; the merged commune's minutes speak of 29 alps let to farmers without naming this one, and a 2021 water project for the sector mentions private alps too, so take the ownership as probable, not read from the land register. Nothing requires the owner's yes on pasture in Fribourg, no sign or court ban exists, and no fee or tolerance is published anywhere. If you meet the tenant at the chalet, a word costs nothing.10

The one restriction on the crest: Enney's drinking water

The cadastre extract for the crest parcel, 3'925 m² of ridge strip, carries a single restriction, and it covers 100 % of it: groundwater protection zone S2 "Aux Frassettes", the intermediate zone of the springs that feed Enney, 1.6 km east and 400 m lower, in karst; the bare limestone pavement 200 to 350 m north of the summit is the same rock. The pin lies 294 m inside the zone, the flat strip too; the first ground outside it is the 3-degree bench 314 m south-west on the path towards Les Traverses, already in the outer zone S3. No nature or landscape protection lies on any of the five parcels around the summit, and the geometry of all their restrictions was tested at the pin.2

The zone's rules are a 1998 communal règlement approved by the canton. Its use table marks, for the zones S1, S2 and S3 alike, "Places de camping" and "Places pour caravanes et mobile-homes" as forbidden, in the same block as sports grounds and hard-standing areas; it allows grazing on the same ground and never uses the words tent, bivouac or overnight. Read as what it is, a table of facilities and installations, it bans campsites, not a night in a tent, and the federal water ordinance behind it lists for S2 the construction of works and installations, excavation, infiltration of waste water and "les autres activités qui constituent une menace pour l'utilisation de l'eau potable". A breach of the zone rules is finable under the cantonal water act, and pollution under the federal one. That last clause is the honest rule of this crest, and it is written for exactly what a careless camper does: a latrine, soap in the grass, a fire pit, grey water. So: no toilet business on the crest, walk down the flank and dig nothing near the top, no washing with soap, no fire, everything carried out, and treat the flat strip as the roof of somebody's tap.32

How to do it right

  • The pitch: the flat grass strip 30 m south-west of the summit point, 2'570'144 / 1'155'744 at 1'667 m, 1.6 degrees, or the 4.6-degree high point 30 m east; 10 to 30 m off the path, 600 m inside Bas-Intyamon, 385 m from the chalet, not on the path, not on the track, not in the chalet yard. The point itself is a 20-degree lip with the forest a metre away1.
  • Water: none on the crest. Fill up at the fountains of La Léchire on the Enney ascent. Whether the col chalet has a fountain could not be confirmed11.
  • Fire: none. The public-domain regulation bans fires outside designated places, the forest act lets the canton ban them anywhere in a dry spell, Gruyères republished a total cantonal fire ban in July 2026, and you are on a spring catchment64.
  • Cattle: the alp is grazed from June to September, with electric fences across the paths. Close what you open, keep the tent out of the herd's line, and if the tenant is at the chalet, say hello1013.
  • Season: the crest is a ski-touring summit in winter and holds snow into May; the Poyet club cabin on the north slope is for group rental only. Hunting is open from 1 September 2026 to the end of February; nothing published closes the alp roads, but a hunter's morning on the crest is a hunter's morning1213.
  • The bus: TPF line S50 Bulle to Enney runs hourly, last train Friday and Saturday 23:50 from Bulle, Sunday 22:50; from Enney the last return is 00:53 on Friday and Saturday nights and 23:53 on Sundays, so a dawn descent catches the first train easily11.
  • The campsite: Camping Haute-Gruyère in Enney, 713 m, 2.8 km and 956 m below the summit, CHF 24 for a tent and one adult, 1 April to 31 October 2026, 026 921 22 60. The village inns at Enney and Estavannens serve food and list no rooms12.
  • After 1 July 2027: the new rest zones on the Moléson and the Dent de Lys carry a camping ban in their protection periods. Neither reaches La Vudalla, and this article will be re-checked when they come into force5.

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, and on La Vudalla that is the crest itself. It is not legal text, but decency and common sense, and on a summit whose subsoil is a village's water supply it is also the only thing standing between a permissive law and the day the commune decides it needs a sign.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed on La Vudalla?
Yes, for one night, and nobody has to be asked. The summit lies outside every federal inventory and 2.9 km from the nearest game reserve, canton Fribourg has no camping prohibition, and the commune of Bas-Intyamon's police regulation needs a permit for tents only on the communal public domain, which is the track and the road end, not the leased summit pasture. The only restriction on the crest is a drinking-water protection zone, which bans campsites as facilities and governs how you behave, not whether you may stay.
Where exactly do I pitch?
The flat grass strip 30 m south-west of the summit point. LV95 2'570'144 / 1'155'744 at 1'667 m reads 1.6 degrees; the true high point 30 m east reads 4.6. Both are 10 to 30 m off the path and 385 m from the alp chalet. The gazetteer point itself is the north lip at 18 to 21 degrees with the spruce forest a metre away. Not on the path, not on the track, not in the chalet yard.
What about the drinking-water zone?
It is the rule that matters here. The whole crest parcel is the intermediate protection zone S2 of the Frassettes springs that feed Enney. Its 1998 règlement bans campsites and caravan sites as facilities and never names a tent, but the federal water ordinance bans any activity that threatens the water, and breaches are finable. So no latrine on the crest, no soap, no fire, everything carried out.
Is there a fine?
Not for the night itself. No federal, cantonal or communal norm reaches a tent on the crest pasture. A tent on the communal track or at the road end would fall under the police regulation's permit rule, CHF 20 to 1'000 by penal order; polluting the spring catchment is finable under the water acts; and from 1 July 2027 the Moléson and Dent de Lys rest zones carry a camping ban in their protection periods, neither of which covers La Vudalla.
