Wild camping at the Sarnersee

The Sarnersee, 469 m, fills the valley floor between Sarnen, Sachseln and Giswil. Obwalden allows one night in a tent where no public or private interest is impaired. The built shore is lidos, villages and farmland, and the wild shore is four reserves that ban camping.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. The full difference: wild camping vs bivouacking.

Wild camping at the Sarnersee: a valley lake between three villages

Wild camping at the Sarnersee is a question about a whole shore. Lake Sarnen covers 7.5 km² at 469 m, with 15.5 km of shoreline and up to 52 m of depth, in the valley floor of Obwalden. Sarnen holds the north end and the whole west shore, Sachseln the east shore and the south end, and Giswil a short stretch at the south-west corner, the one with its campsite on it. Kerns and Alpnach do not touch the water.9

The whole shore is valley floor, far below the tree line, and almost all of it is in use. At the north end Sarnen has the Seefeld: a sports ground, the ship landing, the lido and the communal campsite, with the hospital quarter behind. Along the east shore the railway and the A8 run between the water and the slope, with Sachseln's lakefront park and lido in the middle. The west shore is farm meadows below the houses of Wilen and Oberwilen, cut by the gravel delta of the Steinibach. Only the south end is open and empty: the Hanenried, reed and litter meadow, flat because it is fen.9

So the shore comes in two kinds. Ground that people use every day, where the cantonal one-night rule runs into its own condition, and reserve, where a ban of its own applies.13

Obwalden allows one night, on a condition this shore does not meet

The act is the Gesetz über das Campieren of 4 December 2014, GDB 971.4, in force since 1 March 2015; on 23 October 2026 the cantonal law collection listed it unchanged, with no future version. Art. 6 bans setting up tents, caravans and motorhomes to camp outside authorised campsites. Art. 8 makes the exception:1

"Zum einmaligen Übernachten darf ein Zelt, ein Wohnwagen oder ein Wohnmobil ohne Bewilligung ausserhalb bewilligter Campingplätze aufgestellt werden, wenn keine öffentlichen oder privaten Interessen beeinträchtigt werden."Gesetz über das Campieren, GDB 971.4, Art. 8 para. 1. For a single overnight stay a tent, caravan or motorhome may be set up without a permit outside authorised campsites, provided no public or private interests are impaired.

On the Sarnersee the condition fails. A lido lawn is a public park in use from morning to night, the lakefronts of Sarnen and Sachseln lie under houses, the railway and the A8, and every meadow on the west shore belongs to a farmer and lies below the houses of Wilen. A tent on any of them impairs exactly what the article protects: the public's use of its park, the owner's use of his meadow. Where Obwalden's one-night yes does work, on open alp ground far above any village, is set out in wild camping in Kerns.19

The act names the tent. Ban and exception both speak of tents, caravans and motorhomes; a bivvy bag without a tent is named in neither. On a park lawn or a meadow by a house that changes nothing, and in the reserves the canton bans bivouacking as well. Art. 11 punishes breaches with a fine and names no amount.18

The communes add no camping rule, only a permit for paths and car parks. Sarnen, Sachseln and Giswil have no police regulation and no camping article. Their street regulations require a permit for any use of public roads, paths and squares beyond the ordinary (Sarnen Art. 5, Sachseln Art. 6, Giswil Art. 7), and Sarnen's parking regulation allows caravans and trailers on public car parks only with a special permit from the communal council. A tent on the lakeside path is that kind of use. How the federal, cantonal and communal levels fit together: the national overview.67

One caveat with a date on it. On 26 March 2026 the cantonal parliament accepted, 48 to 2, a postulate to restrict one-night stays in caravans and motorhomes; the government wants the tent night reviewed as well. No bill had been published by 23 October 2026, so Art. 8 applies unchanged, but check the law collection before a trip.21

The natural shore is reserve, and the reserves ban camping by name

Every piece of shore that is not built on or farmed is protected. Four instruments cover it, and each one names camping or bans every use.9

Hanenried, the south end, Sachseln. The cantonal nature reserve Hanenried takes in the fen at the south end of the lake, which is also a fen and an amphibian spawning site of national importance and an Emerald site of the Council of Europe. Its regulation of 17 May 2011 divides it into three zones: zone 1 the fen, zone 2 a buffer, zone 3 the shallow water. Art. 8 para. 1 lit. a forbids entering zone 1 at all, except for maintenance and farming. For zone 2 it is explicit:3

"c. das Kampieren und Anfachen von Feuer;"Reglement über die Naturschutzzone Hanenried, GDB 786.55, Art. 8 para. 2 lit. c, for zone 2, the buffer: camping and lighting fires are forbidden.

So the night is out in either zone. In the fen even stepping in is forbidden, which rules out a bivvy bag as much as a tent; in the buffer, camping is. Within a 50 m strip along the shore bathing is forbidden too, and the canton marks the reserve with posts.3

The Steinibach floodplain, west shore. The gravel delta of the Steinibach, in Sarnen with its upper part in Giswil, is a floodplain of national importance. Its regulation of 7 April 2020, GDB 786.58, Art. 3 para. 1 lit. b, forbids "das Campieren", camping, in the whole protected area. The delta also lies in a zone of considerable natural hazard.49

The Melchaa delta at the Sarnen lido. Just south of the Seefeld campsite, Sarnen's building and zoning regulation, Art. 31 para. 4, forbids every use and intervention in its nature protection zone I at the lido, on parcels 4085, 398 and 732, and requires a fence between the zone and the busy lido and campsite ground. A tent is a use. Breaches are punished under Art. 70, by way of Art. 62 of the cantonal building act.6

The Usser Allmend fen at Giswil. Beside Camping International the reserve Usser Allmend-Schwerzbachried, GDB 786.53, forbids in zones 1 and 2 entering, dogs off the lead outside the hunt, camping and lighting fires, Art. 8. Its edge lies 52 m from the campsite's address point.5

What a breach costs is not fixed. The reserve regulations refer to Art. 24 ff. of the federal nature protection act and to Art. 34 of Obwalden's nature protection ordinance, which says only: "Vorsätzliche oder fahrlässige Widerhandlungen gegen Vorschriften dieser Verordnung sowie darauf gestützter Erlasse und Verfügungen werden mit Busse bestraft." No franc amount and no fixed-penalty tariff is published, and the same ordinance obliges police, forestry staff and game wardens to report offenders. The canton's office for forest and landscape put it plainly in May 2025: "In Schutzgebieten jedoch gilt ein absolutes Campierverbot. Hier sind das Campieren, Biwakieren sowie das Abstellen von Wohnmobilen ausdrücklich untersagt." The cantonal police repeated it in August 2026: "In allen Naturschutzzonen gilt ein striktes Campierverbot."8

The Sarnersee shore, place by place

  • Seefeld lawn, Sarnen, north end: no. LV95 2'661'272 / 1'193'324 (46.88821 N, 8.24258 E), 471 m. A public park in the zone for public buildings, between the sports ground, the ship landing and the lido. The campsite is 500 m south.910
  • Melchaa delta at the Seefeld lido: forbidden. About LV95 2'661'224 / 1'192'544 (46.8813 N, 8.2418 E), south of the campsite: nature protection zone I, every use banned, fenced off.6
  • Wilen, the meadow at Schlagenmattli: no. LV95 2'659'200 / 1'191'680 (46.87361 N, 8.21518 E), 480 m. A private farm meadow in the agricultural zone, below the houses of Wilen and the Wilerstrasse, in a cantonal landscape protection area, sloping at about 12 degrees. No owner publishes a yes.9
  • Sachseln lakefront park by the lido: no. LV95 2'660'500 / 1'191'010 (46.86747 N, 8.23215 E), 471 m. Recreation and leisure zone, a park with a sunbathing lawn and lake access in the building regulation, between the railway and the water.79
  • Hanenried, the south end: forbidden. LV95 2'657'868 / 1'188'876 (46.84851 N, 8.19736 E), 470 m. The only open shore without buildings, and flat because it is fen: cantonal reserve, federal fen, amphibian site and Emerald site.39
  • Steinibach delta, west shore: forbidden. LV95 2'657'324 / 1'189'836 (46.85719 N, 8.19035 E), 474 m, about 450 m north of Camping International. National floodplain, camping banned, gravel in a hazard zone.49
  • Usser Allmend, beside the Giswil campsite: forbidden. Fen reserve, entering and camping banned in zones 1 and 2.5
  • Lakeside paths and public car parks: no. A tent or a parked caravan there needs a communal permit.67

Where you can legally sleep at the Sarnersee

  • Camping Seefeld Park, Sarnen: open all year. Seestrasse 20, 6060 Sarnen, at the north end of the lake, LV95 2'661'380 / 1'192'856. The commune's own campsite, open 365 days a year, with a tent meadow and online booking: +41 41 666 57 88, welcome@seefeldpark.ch. Campervans have a separate area in front of the campsite, listed for 18:00 to 10:00.10
  • Camping International, Giswil: seasonal, check the season. Campingstrasse 11, 6074 Giswil, at the south-west corner of the lake, 46.85362 N, 8.18772 E. Lucerne's tourism listing gives the season as late March to mid-October and the operator publishes no dates, so in late autumn it is probably closed: +41 41 675 23 55, giswil@camping-international.ch.10
  • Camping Ewil, Sachseln: no longer for touring guests. From the 2026 season it takes no tourists and sends them to the campsites of Giswil, Sarnen or Lungern.10
  • A night outside in Obwalden belongs higher up, on open alp ground where Art. 8 holds: the signposted tent zone on Melchsee-Frutt, in Kerns, or a bivvy bag on Höch Gumme above Lungern.1

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which at the Sarnersee means a campsite pitch, and in Obwalden's mountains a night where Art. 8 holds. It is not legal text, it is decency in a valley where every metre of shore is somebody's park, meadow or reserve.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Disclaimer

This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of October 2026. It is based on the publicly accessible and official sources linked below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement of the current legal situation.

The verdict rests on Obwalden's camping act GDB 971.4 as the cantonal law collection listed it on 23 October 2026, on the regulations of the Hanenried, Steinibach and Usser Allmend reserves, on Sarnen's building and zoning regulation in its version of 28 May 2024, on the published regulations of the three communes and on the cadastre of public-law restrictions. The zones inside the Hanenried reserve and the edge of the Melchaa zone are fixed by the plans and the posts on site, not by the coordinates given here, and nobody at the communes, the canton or the campsites was asked. Before every trip, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed at the Sarnersee?
No: the shore is parks, farmland and reserves. Obwalden's camping act, GDB 971.4, allows a single night in a tent without a permit in Art. 8, but only where no public or private interests are impaired. On the Sarnersee that leaves no ground: the lido lawns in Sarnen and Sachseln are public parks, the west shore is farm meadows below the houses of Wilen, and the railway and the A8 run along the east shore. The natural shore is four reserves, Hanenried, the Steinibach floodplain, the Melchaa delta and the Usser Allmend, which ban camping or every use. Camping Seefeld Park in Sarnen is open all year.
Why is the verdict "Not allowed" and not "Illegal"?
Because no single ban covers the whole shore. The four reserves ban camping or every use, and a night there is illegal. On the lido lawns and the farm meadows no rule names camping; what rules a tent out there is the condition of Art. 8 GDB 971.4, which fails where a park's users or a meadow's owner are affected, and the communal permit any tent on a public path or car park needs.
Can I sleep at the Hanenried at the south end?
No. The cantonal reserve Hanenried, GDB 786.55, forbids entering its fen zone except for maintenance and farming, and camping and lighting fires in its buffer zone, Art. 8 of its regulation of 17 May 2011. It is also a fen and an amphibian spawning site of national importance and an Emerald site. Breaches are punished under Art. 24 ff. of the federal nature protection act and Art. 34 of the cantonal nature protection ordinance, with a fine of no fixed amount.
Where can I pitch a tent at the Sarnersee?
At Camping Seefeld Park in Sarnen, open all year. Seestrasse 20, 6060 Sarnen, at the north end of the lake, with a tent meadow: +41 41 666 57 88, welcome@seefeldpark.ch. Camping International in Giswil, at the south-west corner, +41 41 675 23 55, is seasonal and listed as closing in mid-October, so check the season. Camping Ewil in Sachseln no longer takes touring guests from 2026.
Can I spend one night in a campervan by the lake?
Not on a public car park without a permit. Art. 8 GDB 971.4 covers caravans and motorhomes on the same condition as tents, and Sarnen's parking regulation, Art. 3 para. 1, allows caravans and trailers on public parking areas only with a special permit from the communal council. In front of Camping Seefeld Park there is a separate campervan area, listed for 18:00 to 10:00. A postulate accepted by the cantonal parliament on 26 March 2026 aims to restrict the motorhome night further; no bill had been published by 23 October 2026.
