Wild camping in Kerns
Kerns runs from its village up the Melchtal to the Melchsee-Frutt plateau at 1'900 m. Obwalden's camping act allows one night in a tent there without a permit. On the plateau the landowner names one zone for it, at the Balmeregg lift, and wants to be asked elsewhere.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping in Kerns: a valley commune that ends on an alp plateau
Wild camping in Kerns is a question about a whole commune, 92.6 square kilometres of Obwalden. In the north it starts in the Kernwald by the Alpnachersee basin, the village lies at 570 to 700 m, and from there the Melchtal runs south to Stöckalp at 1'063 m, where the gondola leaves for Melchsee-Frutt. The plateau at about 1'900 m holds the Melchsee, the Blausee and the Tannensee, three alps and a small resort; a ring of summits on the Bern and Nidwalden borders tops out at 2'699 m on the Rotsandnollen.5
The night belongs on the plateau. Forest covers the Melchtal flanks up to about 1'700 to 1'750 m, and below it the commune is farmland, forest, roads and the village. Above it the plateau is open alp pasture with lifts, hotels and lakes, and that is where a tent makes sense. The yes itself does not come from the tree line: it comes from the cantonal camping act, which applies on the valley floor as much as on the alp.51
Most of the ground belongs to corporations. By its own figures the Korporation Kerns owns 2'648 of the commune's 9'258 hectares and the Alpgenossenschaft Kerns ausserhalb der steinernen Brücke 2'637. The Alpgenossenschaft describes itself as the landowner of the alp land on Melchsee-Frutt: the Aa, Melchsee and Tannen alps, which make up most of the plateau and are grazed in summer, roughly from early July to early September.4
Obwalden put the yes in its camping act, and Kerns adds no rule
The act is the Gesetz über das Campieren of 4 December 2014, GDB 971.4, in force since 1 March 2015; on 1 October 2026 the cantonal law collection listed no amendment and no future version. Art. 6 bans setting up tents, caravans and motorhomes to camp outside authorised campsites. Art. 8 then carves out the single night:1
"Zum einmaligen Übernachten darf ein Zelt, ein Wohnwagen oder ein Wohnmobil ohne Bewilligung ausserhalb bewilligter Campingplätze aufgestellt werden, wenn keine öffentlichen oder privaten Interessen beeinträchtigt werden."Gesetz über das Campieren, GDB 971.4, Art. 8 para. 1. For a single overnight stay a tent, caravan or motorhome may be set up without a permit outside authorised campsites, provided no public or private interests are impaired. Para. 2 adds that the night is at your own risk.
One night, and only one. The article is headed "Einmaliges Übernachten", a single overnight stay. A second night in the same place falls back under the Art. 6 ban, and Art. 11 punishes camping without a permit and repeated breaches of the ban with a fine. The act names no amount.1
The proviso is where the landowner comes in. Art. 8 asks for no permit and no consent, but it holds only while no public or private interest is impaired. On grazed pasture whose owner has published where it wants tents, and asks to be asked everywhere else, a night it has not agreed to is hard to square with that clause. That is why the plateau has an answer of its own.13
The act names the tent. Ban and exception both speak of tents, caravans and motorhomes; a bivvy bag without a tent is named in neither, and Art. 8 covers the tent anyway. Inside protected areas the canton's notice bans bivouacking too, so the difference stops mattering there.17
Kerns adds no camping regulation. The commune has no police, camping or fixed-penalty regulation, and its building regulation puts the alps in the Alpwirtschaftszone without a word on camping. Its online counter restates the cantonal act, one-night exception included, word for word, and its only camping ban covers the school and sports grounds. How the federal, cantonal and communal levels fit together: the national overview.2
One caveat with a date on it. On 26 March 2026 the cantonal parliament accepted, 48 to 2, a postulate to restrict one-night stays in caravans and motorhomes; the postulate itself says hikers with a tent should keep the right. The government's answer of 3 March 2026 wants the tent night reviewed as well. No bill had been published by 2 October 2026, so Art. 8 applies unchanged, but check the law collection before a trip.91
Melchsee-Frutt: one signposted zone, and the owner's yes everywhere else
The plateau has a leaflet for tents. "Zelten auf Melchsee-Frutt", issued in July 2026 under frutt.ch, the lift business of the Korporation Kerns at the same address as the Alpgenossenschaft's alp administration, and linked from the home page of the resort's website, gives the rule in four sentences:3
By law, one night in the signposted zone at the Balmeregg valley station is allowed; outside the signposted zone you need the consent of the landowner concerned; the night is at your own risk; breaches of the Obwalden camping act may be reported by the landowner to the prosecuting authority.
It is the landowner's word, not a second law. The leaflet names the place where the owner wants tents, cites the cantonal act for the night itself and reminds you that the owner can report a breach of that act. The zone is a standing yes: open to anyone, no booking, no fee, a public toilet at the station, quiet from 22.00. Everywhere else on the alp the route is a request. The leaflet replaces one from 2021, which had neither the consent sentence nor the quiet hours.3
The owner is the Alpgenossenschaft. The Aa, Melchsee and Tannen alps belong mainly to the Alpgenossenschaft Kerns ausserhalb der steinernen Brücke, and the Balmeregg zone lies on a parcel that its grazing rules list as part of the Melchsee alp. Its published rules deal with grazing and say nothing about visitors or tents, so the leaflet is its whole public position. Whether it agrees to a night elsewhere is not published, and neither is any fee. Its letter of August 2020, now filed as no longer valid, sent tents to two designated areas and closed every other parcel; the 2026 leaflet asks to be asked instead.4
For a night outside the zone, ask the Alpenverwaltung: Korporation und Alpgenossenschaft Kerns a.d.st. Brücke, Sarnerstrasse 1, 6064 Kerns, 041 666 31 00, info@alpgenossenschaft-kerns.ch. The office is open on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Ask before the trip, name the spot, and take a no as the answer.4
Keep off the fens, whatever the answer. Three fens of national importance lie on the plateau: Melchsee, Distelboden and Tannen. The canton protects them with a protection and use plan for the Kerns alps, GDB 786.48; the regulation that goes with it is not published online and can be consulted only at the cantonal office and the Kerns chancellery. The canton treats protected areas as no-camping ground, and a tent on a fen is what the protection is there to prevent. The Balmeregg zone is clear of both fens near it: the Melchsee fen begins 254 m south-south-west of the lift station, the Distelboden fen 347 m north-east.675
Not on the shores by the village, the hotels and the lifts. The lake shore along Melchsee-Frutt village, the BergSeeStrand and the ground by the lift stations lie in sight of buildings, paths and lifts, with the zone a short walk away.5
Where the answer is no: the Hutstock reserve and the winter rest zones
The federal Hutstock reserve covers 18 % of Kerns. Hunting-ban district no. 11, Hutstock, an area with integral protection, takes in 1'665 hectares of the commune: the summit ring east of the Melchtal, from the Huetstock and the Rotsandnollen to the Hohmad, the Tannenstock and the Juchlipass. Inside it the federal ordinance is categorical:75
"Das freie Zelten und Campieren ist verboten. Vorbehalten bleibt die Benutzung offizieller Zeltplätze. Die Kantone können Ausnahmen bewilligen."Verordnung über die eidgenössischen Jagdbanngebiete (VEJ), SR 922.31, Art. 5 para. 1 lit. e. Free tenting and camping are forbidden; official campsites are excepted; the cantons may grant exceptions.
That ban does not care whose land it is, and the cantonal one-night permission does not reach it: Art. 8 is cantonal, the ban is federal. Only the canton can grant an exception, and not for a tourist's night. The federal fixed-penalty list prices camping in a federal hunting-ban district at CHF 150 (OBV annex 2 no. 12005). Obwalden's own notice of 28 May 2025 names this reserve, "z.B. Huetstock, Gemeinde Kerns", and bans bivouacking there as well as camping.7
The line runs close to two places people go. The Storeggpass lies 3 m outside the reserve and the Follenseeli 29 m outside it: treat both as inside. Above the Tannalp it runs only a few hundred metres uphill of the grazed pasture north of the Tannensee.5
Three forest rest zones close in winter. Wissdossenwald, Obere Lachen - Schluchi and Arviboden - Grosswald, the last under the Stöckalp gondola, are cantonal wildlife rest zones and legally binding: from 1 December to 30 April you may enter them only on the marked routes, with dogs on a lead. The Gibel - Kleines Melchtal zone west of the Hochstollen, across the line in Lungern, works the same way; its line by the summit is traced in wild camping on the Hochstollen. Leaving the routes inside a zone in that season costs CHF 150 (OBV annex 2 no. 12003).8
Where you can sleep in Kerns, place by place
- Melchsee-Frutt, the signposted zone at Balmeregg: yes, one night. At the south-east corner of the Melchsee, by the valley station of the Balmeregg lift, LV95 2'664'037 / 1'180'179 (46.76971 N, 8.27701 E). The meadow south of the station lies at 1'900 m and slopes at about 7 degrees; the signs on site mark the zone. From the gondola's new top station it is about 1.3 km on foot, from the Dempfelsmatt car park about 1.75 km. Keep the tent on dry grass, away from the fen shore to the south-west.35
- Open alp pasture elsewhere on the plateau: ask first. The Aa, Melchsee and Tannen alps, the grazed Tannalp pasture by the Tannensee included, are consent ground: a night there needs the Alpgenossenschaft's yes. In summer the cattle are on them; keep clear of herds, troughs and wet ground.34
- The Abgschütz pass, 2'229 m: only with the same owner's yes. The pass lies on the Aa alp, and in summer the cattle drink at its pool. With the owner's agreement the dry grass at LV95 2'660'767 / 1'181'407 (46.78107 N, 8.23437 E), 2'226 m, east of the pool and never in its bed, takes a tent; the crest breaks off into a cliff about 50 m north, and there is no water at the pass. The pass, its shelter hut and the rest zone west of it: wild camping on the Abgschütz.54
- The Hochstollen summit, 2'481 m: lawful ground, no pitch on the Kerns side. East and south-east of the top the Kerns side is cliff and slab.5
- The shores by the village, the hotels and the lifts: no. They lie in sight of buildings and lift stations, with the zone a short walk away.5
- The three fens: keep out. Melchsee, Distelboden and Tannen, under the cantonal plan GDB 786.48.6
- The Hutstock reserve: no, and nobody can say yes. The summit ring east of the Melchtal; a federal ban, CHF 150.7
- The village, the Melchtal and the forest: no. Kerns village, St. Niklausen, the Melchtal and the Kernwald are farmland, forest and houses; every meadow there is somebody's, which is the private interest Art. 8 protects. Not at Stöckalp either: the lift company says camping at its valley station is not allowed, and the Stöckalp car park no longer takes campers overnight.101
- Campervans have their own one-night area on the gravel of the Dempfelsmatt car park. The road up from Stöckalp runs one way by the hour and takes no caravans.10
- Season, beds, fire. The gondola from Stöckalp runs until 18 October 2026 and again from 12 December, when the plateau becomes a ski area; the lift company lists camping as summer only. Beds: the hotels and group lodgings on the plateau, guest information 041 669 70 60; the nearest tent campsite is Camping Seefeld Park in Sarnen, where the lift company itself sends campers in winter. Forest-fire danger in Obwalden has stood at level 3, "erheblich", since 11 September 2026: fires only at fixed fire sites, so a stove at the zone.10
General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which in Kerns means the signposted zone at Balmeregg or a spot the landowner has agreed to. It is not legal text, but on a working alp whose owner has asked to be asked, it is also what keeps the one-night yes a yes.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.
Disclaimer
This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of October 2026. It is based on the publicly accessible and official sources linked below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement of the current legal situation.
Cantonal acts, the landowner's leaflet and lift seasons change. A postulate accepted by the Obwalden parliament on 26 March 2026 targets one-night stays in caravans and motorhomes, and the government wants the tent night reviewed as well; no bill had been published by 2 October 2026. The limits of the Balmeregg zone are set by the signs on site, not by the coordinates given here; the regulation for the fens on the plateau is not published online; whether the landowner agrees to a night outside the zone is its decision, case by case. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.
