Wild camping in Samedan

Samedan is a village on the Inn plain, but most of the commune is high ground: the Val Muragl and, in a separate piece, the Val Roseg up to Piz Bernina. Camping on public ground is banned, except one tent pitched briefly above the forest line on a mountain tour.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. The full difference: wild camping vs bivouacking.

Wild camping in Samedan: a village, two high valleys and a game reserve

Samedan is two pieces of ground. The village part, 50.4 km², holds the village at 1'707 m, the Inn plain with Engadin Airport and the golf course, and both campsites. Above it rise Piz Padella and Piz Ot to the north-west, and Muottas Muragl with the Val Muragl and the Val Champagna to the east. The second piece, 63.4 km² and not joined to the first, is most of the Val Roseg south of Pontresina: the Hotel Roseg Gletscher, the Lej da Vadret, the Coaz and Tschierva huts and the peaks from Piz Corvatsch to Piz Bernina, whose summit the boundary with Pontresina crosses.6

A night out happens in two places. In the Val Muragl, the high valley behind Muottas Muragl with the Lej Muragl at 2'714 m, and on the west side of the Val Roseg, along the trail from the Fuorcla Surlej to the Coaz hut. Both lie far above the forest line, which ends at about 2'260 m on the slope above Punt Muragl and at about 2'190 m in the Val Roseg. The village, the airfield, the Inn plain and the forest belt are where the ban applies in full.71

The rule: one tent above the forest line, on a mountain tour

Samedan bans camping on public ground and makes one exception for the mountains. Art. 14 of the police law adopted by the Gemeindeversammlung on 12 April 2007 bans "Campieren in Zelten, Wohnmobilen und dergleichen" on public ground in its first paragraph; a partial revision of 29 June 2026 added, according to the official notice, a ban on fireworks and sky lanterns. The second paragraph reads:1

"Ausgenommen von diesem Verbot sind die von der Gemeinde für das Campieren speziell bezeichneten Stellen sowie das kurzfristige Aufstellen von einzelnen Zelten über der Waldgrenze im Rahmen von Hochgebirgstouren. Auf Gesuch kann der Gemeindevorstand weitere Ausnahmen bewilligen."Polizeigesetz der Gemeinde Samedan, Art. 14 para. 2. In English: exempt from this ban are the places specially designated by the commune for camping and the short-term pitching of single tents above the forest line in the course of high-mountain tours. On request, the Gemeindevorstand may grant further exceptions.

Four conditions, and then nobody has to say yes. Single tents, not a group camp; a short stay, which for a hiker means one night, pitched late and struck early; above the forest line; and as part of a high-mountain tour. Meet all four outside the federal game reserve, which no commune can open, and you need no permit.14

"Hochgebirgstour" is not defined. The act does not say what counts as a high-mountain tour, and the commune publishes no guidance on it or on where its forest line runs. In ordinary German it is a tour through the high mountains, wider than the alpinist's "Hochtour" on a glacier. A night on a route over a pass fits: from Muottas Muragl past the Lej Muragl and on over the Fuorcla Muragl, or from the Fuorcla Surlej down to the Coaz hut. A tent carried up the funicular to sleep beside the hotel at Muottas Muragl does not. If your plan sits in between, ask the commune, which decides and can grant an exception.1

A bivvy bag is not named. The ban covers camping in tents, motorhomes "und dergleichen", and whether a bivvy bag without a tent counts as the like is untested. Above the forest line on a tour it makes no difference, because the tent itself is allowed there. Below it, treat the bivvy bag like a tent.1

The high ground is public ground, which is why the exception was needed. Under the commune's alp law the alps and pastures belong to the Bürgergemeinde and are used and run by the political commune, and Graubünden gives land without another owner, rock and scree included, to the political commune. So practically all the ground above the forest line is public. On a private parcel, such as a hotel's or a hut's, the owner decides instead.3

What it costs. Camping on public ground outside the exception is a fixed fine of CHF 100, item 20.f.1 of the commune's list of fixed fines of 25 April 2022. Refuse the ticket and the Gemeindevorstand decides in ordinary proceedings, up to CHF 10'000 (Art. 23); without a Swiss residence you leave the amount as a deposit if you do not pay on the spot (Art. 24). From 15 May to 30 September the hay meadows in the valley may not be entered at all, CHF 50 (Art. 22).12

Graubünden adds no camping rule for the public, so the commune's ban and its exception are the whole answer here. How the levels fit together across the canton is in the Graubünden overview, and across the country in the national overview.5

The Tschierva side of the Val Roseg is a federal game reserve

About half of the Val Roseg piece is federal game reserve no. 17 Bernina-Albris. Graubünden's ordinance on wildlife reserves draws its line through the Lej da Vadret, the glacier lake at 2'160 m, and down the main stream below it, the Ova da Roseg. East of that line lie the Tschierva hut, the Lejin da Misaun, the east shore of the lake and most of the plain at its outflow. The west side, with Alp Ota, the Coaz trail and the Coaz hut, is outside.56

Inside, a federal ban applies that the commune's exception cannot lift. Art. 5 para. 1 lit. e of the federal ordinance on game reserves (VEJ) bans free tenting and camping, and the federal list of fixed fines prices it at CHF 150 (OBV, Anhang 2 Ziff. 12005). Only the canton may grant an exception, and it publishes none for Bernina-Albris. The reserve has an integral and a partial part, and the ban holds in both.45

You can see the line. On the ground the canton paints reserve boundaries red and yellow, with the red on the reserve side. On your phone, open map.geo.admin.ch with the game reserves layer and compare it with your position. The bench by the Coaz trail lies 845 m outside the line; the Tschierva hut lies more than 2 km inside it.56

Place by place: where the exception works and where it does not

  • Val Muragl and Lej Muragl, 2'714 m: yes. The high valley behind Muottas Muragl lies about 450 m above the forest line, and no federal protected area reaches the bench above the lake. South of the lake lies a rock glacier, and the flat spots on the shore sit right by the water and the path; the place to pitch is the Plaun da la Marenda, 132 m from the water.67
  • West side of the Val Roseg, on the Coaz trail: yes. About 400 m above the forest line and outside the game reserve. The bench below the Plaun dals Süts lies in the federal landscape inventory, object BLN 1908, and in the Emerald site Val Roseg; both bind the authorities and carry no rule for a camper.67
  • Lej da Vadret, 2'160 m: no. The reserve line runs through the lake: the east shore and most of the outflow plain are inside, CHF 150. The strip by the path on the west side lies only 24 to 76 m outside, in a floodplain of national importance and a Ramsar site, and the lake sits at forest height, since larch and arolla pine climb to about 2'190 m in this valley. The exception is doubtful there; walk up to the bench.567
  • Chamanna da Tschierva and Lejin da Misaun: no. Both lie in the reserve, the hut in its integral part, 2'066 m from the edge: CHF 150, whatever the commune's rule says. The night there is a bed in the hut.46
  • Muottas Muragl, 2'450 to 2'570 m: no. The funicular summit, with the Romantik Hotel, the top station, a playground and a web of marked paths, is a destination of its own, not a stage of a mountain tour. The exception is not written for a night beside a hotel, so expect the ban and its CHF 100.17
  • Fuorcla Surlej, 2'755 m: no. The pass, with its Berghaus and a trail junction on bare slabs, sits on the boundary with Silvaplana and leaves no ground for a tent. Walk on south: the bench below the Plaun dals Süts lies 3 km away as the crow flies, by the Coaz trail.7
  • The floor of the Val Roseg: no. Its entrance is Pontresina's ground, where camping is banned on the whole commune and again in the landscape protection zone on the slopes at the mouth of the valley; the Val Morteratsch report sets out Pontresina's rule. Further in, the floor is Samedan's but below the forest line. The valley road is closed to motor vehicles: you walk in or take a horse carriage from Pontresina.8
  • The village, the airfield, the Inn plain and the forest: no. Below the forest line the exception does not apply, so camping on public ground costs CHF 100, and the hay meadows are closed from 15 May to 30 September. The places the commune designates for camping are its two campsites.123

How it is possible: two benches above the forest line

Make it a tour. Walk in, carry one small tent, pitch towards evening, strike at first light and walk on. That is the night Art. 14 para. 2 describes, and outside the game reserve it needs nobody's permission.1

Above the Lej Muragl: the bench on the Plaun da la Marenda. At 46.51008 N, 9.93798 E (LV95 2'791'795 / 1'154'030), 2'758 m, a patch of alpine grass with scattered stones slopes about 3 degrees. It lies 132 m from the shore and about 40 m above it, 39 m from the path to the Fuorcla Val Champagna and 237 m from the nearest stream, and it holds one tent, not a group.76

In the Val Roseg: the bench below the Plaun dals Süts. At 46.40186 N, 9.83865 E (LV95 2'784'543 / 1'141'767), 2'629 m, alpine grass with scattered boulders slopes about 4 degrees, 51 m from the trail between the Fuorcla Surlej and the Coaz hut, 845 m outside the game reserve and 662 m from the shore of the Lej da Vadret. Stay off the wet flat about 300 m to the west-south-west.76

By the Coaz hut, ask first. The hut stands on a rock knoll; the grassy flat 150 m west of it, at 2'612 m beside the trail, belongs to the hut's surroundings. Ask the hut team before you pitch there. The hut is staffed until 4 October 2026 and again from 20 March 2027.97

For any other night, ask the commune. Below the forest line, several tents, a night without a tour: the second sentence of Art. 14 para. 2 lets the commune grant further exceptions on request. Since 1 January 2026 its Geschäftsleitung decides them, and a decision costs CHF 50 to 200 as a rule (Art. 25). Winter is different. From 20 December to 30 April the wildlife rest zones around Muottas Muragl, the Val Champagna and the Val Roseg, and the commune's forest and wildlife protection zones, may not be entered off the marked routes. The two benches lie outside them; the approaches pass close.63

  • The bench on the Plaun da la Marenda, 2'758 m, above the Lej Muragl. 46.51008 N, 9.93798 E: one tent, one night, on a tour.7
  • The bench below the Plaun dals Süts, 2'629 m, by the Coaz trail. 46.40186 N, 9.83865 E, 845 m outside the game reserve.76
  • Chamanna Coaz CAS, 2'610 m. Staffed from 20 June to 4 October 2026 and from 20 March to 25 April 2027; your own sleeping-bag liner is mandatory; +41 81 842 62 78, info@coaz.ch.9
  • Camping Gravatscha, 1'707 m, by the Lej da Gravatscha. Tents welcome, open until 8 November 2026. On the price list in force since May 2025 an adult pays CHF 16 a night and a small tent for up to three people CHF 9; +41 76 253 77 36, info@camping-gravatscha.ch.10
  • TCS Camping Samedan at Punt Muragl: closed. Under renovation from 1 September 2026 until spring 2027; the reception reopens on 28 May 2027.10

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which in Samedan means one small tent above the forest line on a tour, outside the game reserve, never a group. Keep away from grazing animals and the alp huts, carry your water and leave nothing behind.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Disclaimer

This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of October 2026, based on the official and public sources below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement by a public authority.

Communal rules, opening dates and prices change. Nobody at the commune was asked how narrowly it reads "Hochgebirgstour" or where it draws the forest line, and the text of the police-law revision of 29 June 2026 could not be read: Art. 14 is cited as published in 2007, which the official notice of the revision and the commune's rules of procedure of January 2026 bear out. Parcel ownership was not looked up in the land register, and the benches were judged from official aerial imagery and the federal elevation model, not surveyed on site. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned night. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and its consequences. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed in Samedan?
Yes, for one tent above the forest line on a mountain tour. Art. 14 para. 1 of the Samedan police law bans camping in tents, motorhomes and the like on public ground; para. 2 exempts the short-term pitching of single tents above the forest line in the course of high-mountain tours. That covers a night on the bench above the Lej Muragl or by the Coaz trail in the Val Roseg. Below the forest line the ban applies, CHF 100, and the Tschierva side of the Val Roseg is federal game reserve no. 17 Bernina-Albris, CHF 150.
What counts as a high-mountain tour?
The act does not say, so stay with the obvious case. The Samedan police law does not define "Hochgebirgstour", and the commune publishes no guidance. A night on a route through the mountains, over a pass or from one valley to the next, fits the ordinary meaning. A tent carried up the funicular to sleep beside the hotel at Muottas Muragl does not, and neither does a camp below the forest line. When in doubt, ask the commune for an exception under Art. 14 para. 2, on +41 81 851 07 07.
Where does the game reserve start in the Val Roseg?
At the Lej da Vadret and the main stream below it. Graubünden's ordinance on wildlife reserves (VWSG, BR 740.200) runs the line of federal game reserve no. 17 Bernina-Albris through the glacier lake and down the Ova da Roseg. The Tschierva hut, the Lejin da Misaun, the east shore and most of the outflow plain are inside; the Coaz trail and the Coaz hut are outside. On the ground the line is painted red and yellow, red on the reserve side, and map.geo.admin.ch shows it in the game reserves layer.
What is the fine?
CHF 100 on public ground in Samedan, CHF 150 in the game reserve. Samedan's list of fixed fines prices unlawful camping on public ground under Art. 14 para. 1 at CHF 100, item 20.f.1; if you refuse it, the Gemeindevorstand decides in ordinary proceedings, up to CHF 10'000 (Art. 23). In federal game reserve no. 17 Bernina-Albris, free tenting and camping cost CHF 150 under the federal list of fixed fines (OBV, Anhang 2 Ziff. 12005). Entering the hay meadows between 15 May and 30 September costs CHF 50.
Where can I sleep in the valley instead?
At Camping Gravatscha, the campsite that is open. It lies at 1'707 m by the Lej da Gravatscha, takes tents and is open until 8 November 2026; on its price list an adult pays CHF 16 a night and a small tent CHF 9, +41 76 253 77 36. TCS Camping Samedan at Punt Muragl is closed for renovation until spring 2027. Up in the Val Roseg, the Chamanna Coaz CAS is staffed until 4 October 2026, +41 81 842 62 78.
