Wild camping on Piz Vial

Piz Vial rises to 3'168 m between the Greina and Val Lavaz. Its summit is steep rock inside a federal game reserve, where a small tent night is forbidden. Make the climb a daytime objective and book the Terrihütte, with its autumn opening confirmed first.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

One night outdoors. A small tent or bivvy bag, put up towards evening and packed away in the morning. A base camp and a camper-van night are different uses. The wording matters: wild camping vs bivouacking.

Wild camping on Piz Vial: the federal tent prohibition

A planned small-tent night on Piz Vial is forbidden. The summit belongs to the integral-protection part of Pez Vial/Greina, federal game reserve 22. This is a wildlife reserve with a federal visitor rule, not simply a tourism request to spare the mountain. It applies to the summit and the protected ground around it, including a visit that lasts only from evening until morning. 1 2

VEJ, SR 922.31, art. 5 para. 1 lit. e, says:

Das freie Zelten und Campieren ist verboten.

Free tenting and camping are prohibited. The same provision reserves official campsites and lets the canton authorise exceptions. A small tent set up at dusk is still a tent. There is no official summit campsite or published standing authorisation for this overnight stop. The ban has no summer-only period and applies in partial-protection reserve sectors as well as integral ones. 2

The relevant fixed penalty is CHF 150, under OBV, SR 314.11, annex 2 no. 12005. It expressly tariffs free tenting or camping in federal game reserves. It is the ordinary on-the-spot penalty for that act, rather than the large statutory ceiling sometimes quoted for hunting offences. Separate misconduct can have separate consequences. An owner's permission, an alpine location or another person's previous night does not remove the reserve rule. 2 3

The summit is steep rock, not a sleeping terrace

Piz Vial is at 46.63196, 8.96909, about 3'168 m. The Swiss LV95 point is 2'717'192 / 1'165'666. The official name identifies the main summit between the Greina and Val Lavaz; it is not Piz Medel or the neighbouring Piz Greina. Its summit cross stands on a rocky top with steep flanks. The SAC describes a blocky ridge and steep northern ice with brittle rock. 1 9

The surrounding ground has a median slope of 49.9 degrees within 30 m. A relatively gentle cell at the summit does not provide space for a tent. The nearest 10 by 10 m patch entirely below 20 degrees lies 237 m south and 173 m lower. That is a descent through mountain terrain, not a level shoulder a few steps from the cross. It also remains stony ground rather than a prepared sleeping place. 1

The nearest reserve edge is 427 m south-east, a straight-line map distance. A flatter patch 528 m south-east, at 3'039 m, is glacier or snow ground on the aerial image. Neither is a campsite recommendation. Do not turn the shortest line out of a reserve into an evening descent across loose rock or ice. A sleeping plan needs dry usable ground and its own legal permission, not merely a favourable map colour. 1 7 9

A bivvy bag is not a confirmed summit exemption

The federal tent clause names Zelten and Campieren, not Biwakieren. That distinction matters for a single night without a tent. The words alone do not settle every tentless situation, and they do not establish a published permission to spend a planned night on this summit. A bivvy bag should not be sold as a route around the reserve's prohibition. 2

VEJ article 5 paragraph 1 letter b also prohibits disturbing or driving away animals. Shelter choice does not switch off that obligation. The reserve's official object sheet names the protection of wildlife from disturbance as a purpose, including sensitive mountain birds. Dusk, night lights, repeated movements and a dog all affect how a stay uses that habitat. The small-tent answer is clear; a planned tentless summit night has no confirmed exemption here. 1 2

For the practical overnight decision, use a booked roof. The Swiss wild-camping overview explains why the above-treeline tradition is subject to protected-area rules. A genuine emergency and a deliberately planned outdoor night are different situations. Leave room in your route plan to turn back before darkness or worsening conditions makes that choice impossible. 2 9

Three communes meet beside the summit

The summit point belongs to Medel (Lucmagn). Sumvitg begins approximately 1.1 m away and Lumnezia approximately 1.2 m away. Medel lies on the western side, Sumvitg to the north and east, and Lumnezia to the south. Those boundaries matter to local rules, but stepping across them leaves the summit within the same federal reserve. A municipal border is not an escape from the tent ban. 1 2 5

Medel's current Baugesetz article 67 prohibits camping throughout the commune. Its building authority can approve time-limited tents and organised camps at sites it specifies. The law adopted on 2 May 2024 received cantonal approval on 13 January 2026. This individual local permission would still be additional to the canton authorisation required inside the federal reserve. The cadastre's landscape zone does not itself provide a tent permission. 5

On Sumvitg public ground, reglement 860.000 articles 1 and 2 prohibit tents/camping and provide an exceptional written application. Runcahez is a separate permit site with a season 1 May to 15 September, not a high summit arrangement. Lumnezia's public-order law 111.100 article 15 directs camping and occupied tents to designated places. Its public-ground context and any private ownership need their own reading. None of these texts grants a standing Piz Vial night or replaces federal authorisation. 6 7

Val Lavaz has a separate winter access restriction

From 15 December to 30 April, Val Lavaz is a binding wildlife-rest zone. Its rule permits crossing only on the mapped route. Medel's 821 wildlife-rest-zone law article 3, adopted on 15 December 2005, carries that seasonal restriction. The official cantonal and federal maps place the summit point inside Val Lavaz. A visible track, an ascent description or a previous visitor's footprints do not create a designated route. 4

The neighbouring Sutglatscher zone begins approximately 3.6 m east of the summit. Its rule is a no-access prohibition, for the same winter dates, rather than Val Lavaz's passage arrangement. Read the exact zone and route before planning a winter outing; crossing onto the east side is not automatically permitted because the next commune has a different camping law. Booking a winter room does not permit travel through closed ground. 4

OBV annex 2 no. 12003 sets CHF 150 for entering or travelling through a wildlife-rest zone outside its designated routes and paths. That access offence is separate from the tent-night offence. Summer removes this dated winter restriction, not the federal reserve's year-round camping prohibition. For skis, the reserve also has its own marked-route rule in VEJ article 5. Match the outing to both the current conditions and the relevant protected-area route. 2 3 4

Who can authorise a reserve exception?

Only the canton can authorise an exception to the reserve tent rule. VEJ article 5 does not delegate it to an alp tenant, a hut keeper or the communal office. Graubünden's practical contact is the Amt für Jagd und Fischerei, +41 81 257 38 92, info@ajf.gr.ch, Ringstrasse 10, 7001 Chur. Give the exact point, date, shelter, party size and purpose, and ask for the actual decision needed for that protected ground. 2 4

For the local ground and article 67: Medel's office, +41 81 920 33 66, info@medel.ch, Via Lucmagn 32, 7184 Curaglia. Parcel 436, EGRID CH472679292305, identifies the summit property in the cadastre. The Grundbuchamt Cadi, +41 81 920 33 44, info@gbacadi.ch, is the title-enquiry contact. 5

The public parcel extract does not name its owner. No named summit tenant, standing tent permission or published overnight fee is attached to this point. Do not presume municipal ownership from its commune or parcel number. Even a correctly identified owner's consent addresses private use only; the reserve and local authority requirements remain. An application route is a question to settle before departure, not a promise that a recreational summit night will be approved. 2 5

For an ordinary mountain trip, the usable arrangement is the hut booking below. It comes with a real sleeping place, an operator and date-specific availability. Paying for a bed does not authorise a tent behind the hut, beside the terrace or on nearby reserve ground. Ask about the bed and follow the booked accommodation's conditions. 8

The Terrihütte: the overnight base to book

The Terrihütte, also called Camona da Terri, is at 2'170 m. Its operator provides 94 beds in the renovated rooms from summer 2026. Book online through the hut's reservation link and confirm that the intended date is available. The current team is Verena and Jochen. Contact +41 81 943 12 05 or info@terrihuette.ch for the season and route conditions. 8

On 6 October 2026, the operator says the hut is open and expects to stay staffed until 17 October. Early snow or persistent bad weather can end the season sooner. During staffed operation, a sleeping-bag liner is compulsory and dinner is served at 19:00. Arrange your day's objective around a return before the meal, rather than treating a summit sunset as compatible with an automatic late arrival. 8

The operator announces a 10-bed winter room from 22 October. Online reservation remains necessary. Bring a proper sleeping bag, your food and the equipment your stay needs: the room has woollen blankets, no running water and limited cooking facilities. Two pots are provided for boiling water or melting snow, but other crockery and cutlery are not supplied. The room's tariff is not yet published on the current page; ask the team for your date. 8

There is a published gap between the expected staffed closing and the winter-room opening. Do not assume accommodation from 18 to 21 October. Obtain the team's explicit confirmation or choose a different planned overnight stage. The hut booking is a roof stay, not a camping permit for its surroundings. Book the Terrihütte 8

Medelserhütte is a separate north-side plan

The Medelserhütte at 2'524 m is another booked roof, on the other side of the massif. Its operator's current summer season runs to 11 October 2026. Reserve through its online system. The contact is +41 81 949 14 03, info@medelserhuette.ch. Use the team to confirm the date and the approach appropriate to your party. 10

During the unstaffed period, its 10-person winter room also requires registration to prevent overbooking. It has beds with pillows and duvets, a wood-fired cooker/heater and supplied firewood. There is no running water while the hut is unstaffed; in snow-free conditions the operator directs guests to water in the blue barrel. A winter-room stay and any supplies consumed are chargeable. Confirm the current price and what to carry. 10

This is not a straightforward descent from Piz Vial's northern face. The SAC describes that face as difficult steep ice and brittle rock, with a time-consuming approach from Medelserhütte. The hut can form a separately planned stage using a suitable published route, but a bed shown on a regional map is not a safe shortcut off a summit. For a Piz Vial ascent from the Greina side, Terri is the SAC's named practical base. 9 10

Plan Piz Vial as a mountaineering objective

The SAC's west-ridge route from Camona da Terri is a mountaineering route. It is graded WS, with 4 hours ascent and 1'050 m ascent. That is not the duration of a short descent to an emergency hut, and the grade is not a promise of easy hiking terrain. Assess your experience, equipment, weather and current snow before adding the summit to a hut trip. 9

In autumn, daylight and an operator's closing date both limit the plan. A confirmed bed, an early start and enough margin to return are part of the same decision. If conditions or progress do not fit, turn back while that remains manageable. The closest reserve boundary is not an alternative itinerary, and a gentle-looking ice patch is not a place to improvise a night. For a later outing, check the winter access restrictions again. 1 8 9

Keep dogs leashed, spare wildlife and take all waste down, including food scraps and toilet paper. Leave drones at home: VEJ article 5 also prohibits civilian unmanned aircraft in the reserve, subject to its stated official exceptions. Medel currently publishes an absolute outdoor fire prohibition outside settlements. Check its current notice and the hut team's advice before relying on any flame, including a stove; no open fire belongs in the summit plan. 2 5 8

For other trips, the Savognin area report and Lai dalla Stria report explain different individual local-permission routes. Their conditions belong to their own ground. Piz Vial's overnight choice is a booked bed, with the summit visited during a route that you can complete in the available daylight. 2 8 9

General rules for wild camping

The summit night is not the plan. Apply these principles to the outing and any authorised outdoor stay elsewhere; a current fire prohibition overrides the general stove suggestion.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Disclaimer

This journalistic assessment uses official and operator sources checked on 6 October 2026. It is not legal advice. The small-tent reserve ban is clear; the interpretation of a planned tentless bivouac and the summit's private ownership remain unresolved.

The boundary distance is a map measurement, not a recommended walking line or dry sleeping place. Aerial images and elevation models do not replace assessment of current snow, ice, loose rock and weather.

Hut opening, bed availability, prices, temporary restrictions and routes can change. Confirm the actual date and accommodation before setting off, especially the Terrihütte's gap between staffed operation and winter-room opening.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping on Piz Vial legal?
No for a small tent. The summit is inside federal game reserve 22 Pez Vial/Greina. VEJ art. 5 para. 1 lit. e prohibits free tenting and camping. OBV annex 2 no. 12005 sets the CHF 150 fixed penalty. 1 2 3
Can I sleep on Piz Vial in a bivvy bag?
VEJ names Zelten and Campieren without expressly naming Biwakieren. That does not establish a lawful planned tentless summit night. Wildlife-disturbance and seasonal access rules still apply, and the summit has no sensible pitch. Use a booked hut. 2 4 8
Can I just move outside the reserve?
The nearest edge is 427 m south-east across alpine terrain. Flatter ground 528 m south-east at 3'039 m is glacier/snow, not a dry campsite. A boundary distance does not establish a usable or legally permitted overnight place. 1 7
What changes in winter?
Val Lavaz permits passage only on its mapped route from 15 December to 30 April. Sutglatscher, 3.6 m east of the summit, prohibits access for the same period. The year-round federal tent ban remains; off-route wildlife-rest-zone access has its own CHF 150 fixed penalty. 2 3 4
Where should I book a night instead?
Terrihütte, 2'170 m: reserve online and call +41 81 943 12 05. It expects staffed operation to 17 October 2026; its booked 10-bed winter room opens 22 October. Confirm the 18 to 21 October gap. Medelserhütte is a separate north-side itinerary with a registration-required 10-person winter room. 8 9 10
