Wild camping around Savognin
Savognin sits at 1'211 m in the Val Surses, and above its meadows and forest, from about 2'100 m, lies open alp pasture. There no rule in force bans a single night, except at Lai Tigiel, a federal game reserve. A commune-wide camping ban awaits the canton's approval.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping around Savognin: village, forest, then open pasture
What the ground around Savognin is. Savognin, at 1'211 m, is the main village of the Val Surses and since 2016 part of the commune of Surses. Meadows and Maiensäss slopes climb to about 1'900 m, closed forest reaches about 2'000 to 2'100 m, and above it open alp pasture runs up to the ridges of Piz Mitgel in the east and Piz Martegnas in the west. That pasture is where a night makes sense: the village, its bathing lake, the farmed meadows and the forest belt are no place for a tent.8
Five former communes share it, and each one's building law still applies. Surses merged nine communes, and until its new building law is approved every old one stays in force on its own ground. Around Savognin that means five: Savognin for the village and the east slope up to Piz Mitgel; Riom-Parsonz for the whole ski area, from Tigignas and Somtgant to the Piz Martegnas chairlift, Radons, the Val Nandro and Lai dallas Bleis; Salouf for the Piz Martegnas summit, Ziteil and Sur Trotg; Tinizong-Rona for Lai Tigiel; and Sur for Alp Flix. The cadastre names the act that applies at each place.2
How you get up. The gondola from Savognin via Tigignas to Somtgant runs daily until 18 October 2026, from 9.00 to 16.30. On the east side a hiking bus runs on Wednesdays until mid-October to Plang la Curvanera at 1'889 m, where the marked trail to Lai Tigiel starts; on the west side a road leads to Radons at 1'867 m in the Val Nandro.10
No rule in force bans a night on the open pasture
Surses has no police law, and its assembly refused a camping ban. A draft police law with a ban on camping in tents and motorhomes on public ground, art. 12, came to the assembly on 7 April 2025 and was refused by 114 votes to 69. The commune's message to the assembly had said it needed a police law to be able to ban wild camping and had none, and its law collection lists no police act of the former communes around Savognin either.1
Savognin's building law bans caravans used as homes, not a tent. It is the act in force for the village and the east slope up to Piz Mitgel, and art. 34 para. 5 says:2
"Zeitlich befristete Zeltlager können vom Gemeindevorstand ausserhalb der Campingzone bewilligt werden. Das Aufstellen von Wohnwagen zu Wohnzwecken ist ausserhalb der Campingzone verboten."Baugesetz Savognin, art. 34 para. 5. In English: time-limited tent camps can be approved by the commune board outside the camping zone; setting up caravans to live in is banned outside the camping zone.
That reaches tent camps and caravans, not one hiker's night. A "Zeltlager" is an organised camp, and the first sentence makes it a permit matter, not a ban; the second bans only caravans used as homes. A small tent or a bivvy bag for one night is neither. There is no case law, so this is a reading of the text, not a ruling.2
The other old building laws are the same or quieter. Riom-Parsonz, whose law covers the ski area and Lai dallas Bleis, lists campsites among the works that need a building permit and adds that caravans may stand only on campsites (art. 85 lit. e). Salouf's bans the installation and operation of campsites outside a camping zone (art. 47), Tinizong-Rona's lets the commune approve time-limited tent camps outside its camping zone (art. 59 para. 4), and Sur's has no camping article. Breaches of a communal building law are fined under the cantonal planning act, CHF 200 to 40'000 (KRG art. 95), and no tariff for camping exists. The only old law in Surses that bans camping outright is Bivio's, at the head of the valley.24
Graubünden and the federal layers add nothing at the two pitches. The cantonal hunting ordinance bans tents outside campsites only for hunters (JBV art. 13), and no cantonal act that applies here bans camping for the public. At the two pitches described below there is no federal game reserve, wildlife rest zone, landscape, mire or dry-meadow inventory and no military area. The whole area lies in the regional nature park Parc Ela, which has no core zone and no access rule for visitors: its charter binds the communes, not campers.7
The park and the tourist board say no, and cite no rule. Parc Ela's summer conduct page states "Das freie Campieren auf Gemeindegebiet ist verboten." and adds that the park association does not support free camping and bivouacking. Tourismus Val Surses writes "Bitte beachten Sie, dass das Wildcampieren im Val Surses nicht erlaubt ist." Neither body is an authority and neither names an act. Their line holds on Bivio's ground and inside the federal reserve at Lai Tigiel, and it describes what the new building law will make true everywhere. An alp tenant may quote it to you; on the open pasture around Savognin no rule in force says it today.92
The new building law: a commune-wide ban waiting for the canton
The commune has already voted for a camping ban. On 9 March 2026 the assembly adopted a total revision of local planning, with a new building law, by 134 votes to 8. Art. 14 "Campieren" says, in the German version presented to the assembly:4
"Das Campieren ausserhalb von Zonen mit erlaubter Campingnutzung ist unter Vorbehalt von Abs. 2 nicht gestattet."Baugesetz Surses, art. 14 para. 1. In English: camping outside zones where camping is permitted is not allowed, subject to paragraph 2. Paragraph 2 lets the commune allow exceptions for offers aimed at single overnight stays, such as time-limited tent camps, designated pitches, car parks and farms; it names no exception for a hiker.
It takes effect on the day the canton approves it. The law enters into force "mit der Genehmigung durch die Regierung" (art. 98 para. 1) and then repeals the building laws of the former communes (para. 3), Savognin's and Riom-Parsonz's included. No approval had been published by 1 October 2026: the cantonal gazette showed only the appeal exposure of April on 30 September, and the cadastre extracts of 1 October still name the old building laws for the village, the ski area and Lai Tigiel. No date is announced, so ask the commune before you go: +41 81 659 11 60.42
What it would mean for a night. Breaches would be fined from CHF 200 to 40'000 (KRG art. 95). A tent would be covered. Whether the verb "Campieren" also reaches a bivvy bag without a tent is unsettled: the Graubünden Obergericht read the word on 3 February 2026, in a parking case, as sleeping in a tent or caravan and narrower than "Übernachten". That is one decision and binds no other court.4
One more dated rule ends on 31 October. The commune's Flurgesetz bars walkers from farmed land, alps included, from 1 May to 31 October (art. 6 para. 2, art. 19, fine up to CHF 5'000); it protects crops, names no tent, and no case against a hiker is published.3
Lai Tigiel: inside the federal game reserve Piz Ela
The classic lake above Savognin is the one place where a night is banned. Lai Tigiel, 2'462 m, lies 4.6 km along the marked trail from Plang la Curvanera, on the ground of the former commune of Tinizong-Rona. It is inside the federal game reserve no. 20 Piz Ela, in the part with integral protection, 386 m inside its edge. The reserve begins where the trail reaches the basin floor, 365 to 402 m before the shore, and the whole lake lies within it.5
Free camping is banned in every federal game reserve. The federal ordinance on game reserves says, in art. 5 para. 1 lit. e:5
"Das freie Zelten und Campieren ist verboten. Vorbehalten bleibt die Benutzung offizieller Zeltplätze. Die Kantone können Ausnahmen bewilligen."Verordnung über die eidgenössischen Jagdbanngebiete (VEJ, SR 922.31), art. 5 para. 1 lit. e. In English: free tenting and camping is banned; the use of official campsites is reserved; the cantons can grant exceptions.
A tent draws a CHF 150 fixed fine. The federal fixed-penalty schedule prices free tenting or camping in a federal game reserve at CHF 150 (OBV, SR 314.11, Anhang 2 Ziff. 12005). No landowner can allow it; only the canton can grant an exception. The wording names tents and camping, not the bivouac, and no court has said whether a bivvy bag without a tent falls under it, so do not try it at the lake.65
Visit by day and sleep 2.0 km west. The pitch below Piz Mitgel described in the next section lies 2.0 km west of the lake and 1.4 km outside the reserve. The ground just below the reserve boundary, on the Tinizong-Rona side, is open to a night by law but makes a poor one: a wet swale, a bare patch where cattle gather and the marked trail 30 m away. In winter the slope south of the Tigiel trail is a wildlife rest zone under a Savognin communal law: from 1 December to 30 April you stay on the marked paths there.87
Where to sleep: two pitches on the open pasture
East: the basin below Piz Mitgel, on former Savognin ground. The pitch lies at 46.60752 N, 9.63762 E (LV95 2'768'449 / 1'164'167), 2'436 m: a small bench about 40 m across, with a median slope of 8.6 degrees within 30 m and 3.9 degrees on the spot, dry tussock grass with scattered stones, no trough and no pond. To the west the ground drops 33 m within 110 m into the Stivlign gully. It is 1.2 km east of the Plang la Curvanera bus stop and about 550 m higher, reached on the unmarked path towards Piz Mitgel and then across the pasture; the nearest marked trail is 700 m away. A spring-protection zone begins 240 m away, so wash and dig well away from springs.87
West: the plateau at Lai dallas Bleis, on former Riom-Parsonz ground. The pitch lies at 46.55710 N, 9.51350 E (LV95 2'759'091 / 1'158'305), 2'520 m, 256 m north-north-west of the lake: a gentle rise of dry tussock grass with a median slope of 3.5 degrees within 30 m. Just west of it, 40 to 100 m away, a flat at 2'517 m is an old pond floor that holds water in spring: keep off it, and off the small tarn about 200 m south-west. From Radons take the marked trail towards the Pass da Schmorras, then walk about 900 m north-east across the pasture; from Somtgant unmarked paths lead over the Piz Martegnas ridge and Colm da Bovs. The plateau lies in the ski area's winter-sport zone, which concerns skiing, not sleeping, and the nearest federal game reserve is 11.8 km away.87
A third pitch on the Somtgant side. The bench above Alp Foppa, on former Salouf ground, has the same legal position: wild camping on Sur Trotg.2
One small tent or bivvy bag, one night, gone at first light. These are summer pastures: keep away from cattle, their troughs and salt licks, and pitch elsewhere if a herd is near. No pasture with livestock guard dogs reaches either pitch.7
Whose ground it is. The land register is not public, and nothing published names the owners or the alp tenants of these slopes. The parcels cover whole alp slopes, and the commune's Flurgesetz leases its own alps to alp cooperatives. No rule makes a night depend on consent, and no fee or standing arrangement is published. If a tenant or the commune asks you to move, move: an owner's will binds without any fine.3
Gemeindeverwaltung Surses, Veia Cantunala 57, 7453 Tinizong, +41 81 659 11 60: the commune can tell you whether the new building law has been approved and may know who runs the alp you are heading for. Tourismus Val Surses in Savognin, +41 81 659 16 16, has the bus and lift times.110
Where not: the village, the forest belt, the lift stations and Alp Flix
The village, the bathing lake and the meadows. Savognin itself, Lai Barnagn, the bathing lake at its edge at 1'159 m, and the Maiensäss meadows up to about 1'900 m are settlement and farmland in sight of houses. Savognin's building law bans caravans used as homes outside the camping zone, and the meadows are someone's hay. Sleep at a campsite.23
The forest belt and the lift stations. Closed forest up to about 2'000 to 2'100 m is no pitch, and in winter several wildlife rest zones lie in it. Tigignas at 1'861 m, Somtgant at 2'098 m, the Piz Martegnas top station, Radons with its Berghaus and T-bars, and Lai Lung at the forest edge at 2'003 m are lift and restaurant ground. The bed up there is the Tgamon hay loft at Somtgant, normally open until mid-October.710
Alp Flix belongs to Sur, not to Savognin. It is reached from Sur, and its plateau at about 1'950 to 2'050 m is settled Maiensäss ground with hamlets and a Berghaus, inside the federal mire landscape Alp Flix, with a raised bog and a Pro Natura reserve at Lai Neir. That is not ground to pitch on.7
Stellplatz & Zeltplatz Rona, Tgaglias 2, Rona, about 4 to 5 km up the valley: tent pitches by the river all year, CHF 25 to 35 a night for one to three people at the time of writing, +41 79 773 81 48. The Naturzeltplatz Geissenhof in Rona takes tents until 18 October 2026, CHF 20, +41 79 827 93 40. Camping Julia in Savognin is open all year but has no tent pitches.10
General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which around Savognin means one small pitch on the open pasture above the forest, never at Lai Tigiel and never a group. Keep away from cattle and their troughs, carry your water and leave nothing behind.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.
Disclaimer
This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of October 2026, based on the official and public sources below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement by a public authority.
Communal rules, the approval status of the new building law, timetables, opening dates and prices change, and the new building law takes effect on the day the canton approves it, with no date announced in advance. The owners and tenants of the alp parcels are not public, and alp rules, if any exist, would add to this text. The two pitches were judged from official aerial imagery and the federal elevation model, not surveyed on site, and no pitch on Alp Flix was assessed. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned night. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and its consequences. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.
