Wild camping in Kandersteg
Kandersteg bans tents outside its authorised sites across the whole commune, from the village at 1'173 m to the glaciers. A night without a tent falls outside that ban, but about three quarters of the commune is a protected mountain landscape where camping is forbidden outright.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping in Kandersteg: one commune, several rules
Wild camping in Kandersteg is a question about a whole commune of about 134 km² at the head of the Kandertal: the village at 1'173 m, the Oeschinensee and the Blüemlisalp to the east, the Gemmi route over the Sunnbüel and the Spittelmatte to the south-west, the Üschenental, and the Gasterntal towards the Lötschenpass.8
A night would happen up high, not in the village. The village, the valley floor and the forest belt are houses, farmland and wood below the tree line, which on these slopes runs at about 1'900 m. Above it, the rules overlap: the police regulation for tents everywhere, the protected Kandersteger Berglandschaft in the building regulation, two cantonal wildlife reserves and a federal game reserve at the edges, five wildlife quiet areas in the forest, and a court order at the Oeschinensee. Which of them applies depends on where exactly you lie down; the lines are on map.geo.admin.ch.129
With a tent: banned across the whole commune
Kandersteg's Gemeindepolizeireglement, in force since 1 January 2021, holds the camping ban:1
"Das Campieren ausserhalb der speziell dafür vorgesehenen und bewilligten Flächen ist nicht gestattet."Gemeindepolizeireglement Kandersteg, Art. 7 para. 1. In English: camping outside the areas specially designated and authorised for it is not permitted.
It reaches every metre of the commune, above the tree line included. Art. 7 names no zone and no altitude, and the commune's camping sheet adds that the ban covers tents above the tree line too, because that ground belongs to the commune as well. Its website carries the banner "Wildcamping Verbot auf dem gesamten Gemeindegebiet!" The police ordinance fines a breach a fixed CHF 200 (Art. 8 para. 3 lit. a), within a frame of up to CHF 5'000 (Art. 26). In light cases a warning can replace the fine, and the council can order the ground restored at your cost (Art. 7 para. 3).15
The definition leaves the bivvy bag out. Art. 6 lit. c defines camping as any overnight stay in tents, caravans, motorhomes, cars or similar shelters, and the mere pitching of a tent counts too, so a night in a car at a trailhead is covered. Then it adds:1
"Nicht darunter fällt das Übernachten im Freien ohne Zelt, im Iglu oder in einer Schneehöhle (Biwakieren)."Gemeindepolizeireglement Kandersteg, Art. 6 lit. c. In English: this does not include spending the night in the open without a tent, in an igloo or in a snow cave (bivouacking).
Under the police regulation the line is the tent, not the night. A bivvy bag under the sky is not camping in its sense. The definition opens with "In diesem Reglement", though: it governs the police regulation and nothing else, and the other rules below have their own wording.1
A tent with a permit. Art. 7 para. 2: "Die Gemeinde kann Ausnahmen auf Gesuch hin bewilligen." The permit can be made conditional on security for toilets, cleaning or the visitor's tax. Ask in writing and well ahead at the Gemeindeverwaltung Kandersteg, Aeussere Dorfstrasse 26, 3718 Kandersteg, 033 675 82 22, info@gemeindekandersteg.ch. No such permit for a single hiker's tent is published, and it lifts only the police-regulation ban, not the protected landscape or the reserves.1
Without a tent: where the night is still banned
The Kandersteger Berglandschaft covers about 77 % of the commune. Art. 42 of the building regulation puts the commune's mountain landscape under protection, in two blocks: in the east the Doldenhorn, the Blüemlisalp, the Fründen, the slopes above the Oeschinensee, the flanks of the Gasterntal, the Kanderfirn and the north ridge to the Dündenhorn; in the west the Bunderspitz, the Üschenegrat, the Gällihore and the Gemmi flanks. Together that is 10'371 ha. Para. 3 lit. c says:2
"Das Campieren ist verboten."Baureglement der Gemeinde Kandersteg, approved by the canton in March 2011, Art. 42 para. 3 lit. c. In English: camping is forbidden.
The building regulation does not define camping and has no bivouac exception. The carve-out in the police regulation does not reach it, so inside the Berglandschaft treat a bivvy bag like a tent. Art. 60 sends breaches to a judge under the Bernese building act (Art. 50 BauG, Art. 108 BauV): no fixed fine, a report is possible. Outside the Berglandschaft lie the village and the valley floor, the floors of the Oeschinental, the Üschenental and the Gasterntal, the Allmenalp and the trough from the Sunnbüel to the Spittelmatte, much of it a zone for tourist activities (Art. 44) that has no camping sentence.28
At the Filfalle, on the valley floor, a cantonal wildlife reserve names the bivouac. Zone 1b of the Wildschutzgebiet no. 23 Kandersteg, 5.7 ha around the Filfallebach and the cantonal fish farm, carries the sentence "Freies/wildes Campieren und Biwakieren sind verboten." The fixed fine is CHF 100. The larger zone 1a along the Kander through the village has no camping sentence; there the police regulation decides. On the north ridge towards the Bire and the Dündenhorn, zone 3 of the Gehrihorn reserve carries the same sentence and the same CHF 100.3
On the crest towards the Kiental, a federal game reserve. The Jagdbanngebiet no. 3 Kiental touches Kandersteg only as a sliver along the crest line. Inside it, free tenting and camping are banned (VEJ Art. 5 para. 1 lit. e), with a fixed fine of CHF 150, and only the canton grants exceptions.4
In five wildlife quiet areas, stay on the marked paths. The Schattwald, the Feisterwald on the wooded north shore of the Oeschinensee, the Gäristport, the Sagiwald on the east flank of the Spittelmatte trough and the Lerchiwang in the Gasterntal are communal Wildruhegebiete. Art. 53 para. 2 of the building regulation: "Personen sollen sich ausser bei land- und forstwirtschaftlichen Arbeiten an die bestehenden, markierten Wege halten." Leaving the path to sleep breaks that rule, with no fixed fine; a report is possible. They are steep forest and flank, not pitches.28
At the Oeschinensee, a court order. The landowners obtained a judicial prohibition under Art. 258 of the Civil Procedure Code, which the operators publish as covering camping, bivouacking and hammocks, with fines of up to CHF 2'000. The tentless exception does not help at the lake; the details are in the Oeschinensee report.7
20 November 2026: the police regulation goes to the vote
The rule that spares the bivvy bag may change. On Friday 20 November 2026, at 20:00 in the Gemeindesaal, the communal assembly of Kandersteg votes on the agenda item "Teilrevision Gemeindepolizeireglement", a partial revision of the police regulation.6
The council started it because of wild campers. Plattform J quoted its communication on 7 October 2026: the high number of visitors and the growing number of wild campers on the commune's ground led to a round table of the commune, the police, tourism, the Oeschinen alp cooperatives, the rangers and the campsite. Then:6
"Um die rechtlichen Grundlagen für weitere Massnahmen zu schaffen, wird der Gemeinderat das Gemeindepolizeireglement einer Teilrevision unterziehen."Gemeinderat Kandersteg, communication quoted by Plattform J on 7 October 2026. In English: to create the legal basis for further measures, the council will put the police regulation through a partial revision.
The draft is not public. Nothing published says whether the revision touches Art. 6 lit. c, the bivouac exception, or the CHF 200 tariff. Everything here about a night without a tent holds for the law in force on 31 October 2026; a revised regulation applies once the assembly has adopted it and it has entered into force. We will update the page after the vote.61
Place by place: where a night would happen, and what applies
- Spittelmatte, Gemmi route, 1'957 m: the lawful bivouac, without a tent. The trough below the Sunnbüel lies outside the Berglandschaft, in a zone for tourist activities, and outside every wildlife reserve and game reserve. Lie down at 46.45138 N, 7.63945 E (LV95 2'615'429 / 1'144'469), about 1.1 km south-west of the Sunnbüel top station, on open grass at a median slope of 3.9 degrees and 151 m outside the Berglandschaft. Why exactly there: two 220 kV lines cross the trough, and the pitch in our Spittelmatte report lies 9 m from their axis, with the conductors overhead. This point is about 60 m south-east of it; keep about 70 m from the line. Stay off the flat floor of the trough further south, a federal fen, floodplain and amphibian spawning site. A tent here costs CHF 200.891
- Oberbärgli, 1'965 m: lawful without a tent only on the alp yard, and weak ground. On the shelf above the Oeschinensee the only flat ground outside the Berglandschaft is the yard 25 to 40 m from the alp hut Oeschibärgli 9, at 46.50957 N, 7.73415 E, 70 m from the Berglandschaft line; the next flat ground to the west lies 80 m inside it. That is in sight of a front door: ask at the alp before you lie down. The alp has its own Oberbärgli report.89
- Oeschinensee: no, with a tent or without. The court order covers the bivouac at the lake, and the police regulation the tent; see the Oeschinensee report.7
- Gasterntal and the Gfelalp: no. The Gfelalp above Selden lies in the Lerchiwang wildlife quiet area and the Berglandschaft, in steep forest; the valley floor at Selden and Heimritz is hamlet and hotel ground below the tree line, where the tent ban decides. Details in the Gfelalp report.28
- Hohtürli and Lötschenpass: passes with their own reports. The Hohtürli leads over to the Kiental, the Lötschenpass to the Lötschental; read the Hohtürli report and the Lötschenpass report.
- Innere Ueschene, Üschenental, 1'868 m: not a pitch. The flattest floor, at 46.44992 N, 7.61841 E, lies outside every zone, but it is wet ground with a rill through it, a dozen alp huts stand 100 to 400 m away, and it sits at the tree line.89
- Allmenalp and Sunnbüel: not a pitch. Lift top stations with a Berghaus, at or below the tree line.9
- Village, valley floor and forest belt: no. Houses, farmland and forest below the tree line. The tent ban applies, CHF 200, a car park included, and at the Filfalle zone 1b bans the bivouac too, CHF 100.13

General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which in Kandersteg means a bivvy bag on the Spittelmatte, a winter room or a campsite pitch. It is not legal text, it is decency on ground that alp farmers and wild animals use.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.
Disclaimer
This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of October 2026. It is based on the publicly accessible and official sources linked below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement of the current legal situation.
The verdict rests on Kandersteg's police regulation and police ordinance, its building regulation as listed in the cantonal cadastre of public-law restrictions, the Bernese wildlife protection ordinance and the object sheets of its reserves, the cantonal and federal fixed-penalty ordinances, the federal ordinance on game reserves, the commune's camping information, and on federal and cantonal geodata and the terrain. The building regulation in force is published as a scan; its wording on Art. 42, 53 and 60 matches the 2023 revision text, and Art. 44 is taken from that text. No court has ruled on whether the building regulation's camping ban reaches a bivvy bag, no permit under Art. 7 para. 2 for a single hiker is published, and the perimeter of the Oeschinensee court order is not published. The draft of the police-regulation revision put to the vote on 20 November 2026 is not public, and the rules described here may change with it. Campsites, huts and their seasons are as published in October 2026. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.
