Wild camping on the Greina plateau

The Greina is the high plain between the Surselva and the Valle di Blenio, and it would take a tent: dry, flat ground at 2'200 to 2'350 m, far above the tree line. Two federal game reserves cover all of it, on both sides of the cantonal border: camping banned, CHF 150.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. Wild camping on the Greina plateau: a plain that would take a tent

Wild camping on the Greina plateau is a question about a plain, and this plain would take a tent. The Greina lies on the main Alpine divide between the Surselva and the Valle di Blenio. Its floor, the Plaun la Greina, runs for about 5 km at 2'200 to 2'350 m, and the Rein da Sumvitg braids across it before it breaks through the rock bar of Muot la Greina and drops into the Val Sumvitg. Two saddles lead off it into Ticino, the Passo della Greina, called Pass Crap in Romansh, at its western end and Crap la Crusch on its southern side; both carry the border between Graubünden and Ticino.19

Three communes share it. The floor lies in Lumnezia, into which Vrin merged in 2013. South of the saddles the plateau belongs to Blenio, in Ticino. The Camona da Terri, the SAC hut on the northern rim, stands in Sumvitg.1

This report grades the floor, not the label. The gazetteer's point for "Plaun la Greina" sits on a 22-degree slope above the plain, where nobody would sleep, so it is not the pin. The pin is a dry terrace beside the meanders in the east of the floor: LV95 2'720'400 / 1'164'950, WGS84 46.624949 / 9.010784, at 2'203 m, on ground that slopes about 2 degrees, 49 m from the water and 27 m from the marked trail. A second reference point lies on the central plain, at LV95 2'718'250 / 1'163'650, WGS84 46.613641 / 8.982383, 2'308 m, almost level. Both are in Lumnezia, and the saddles and the Ticino side get the same answer for the same reason.1

The ground passes, and that is the point. The Graubünden floor holds about 28 hectares of dry ground flatter than 5 degrees, the Ticino side about 14 more, and all of it lies 300 to 400 m above the tree line: the nearest forest grows about 3.5 km away on the Luzzone side and ends near 1'920 m. Not all of the plain is dry. The meanders run through a federal floodplain, and fens cover the ground south of Crap la Crusch and on the Alpe di Motterascio. There are no buildings on the floor, and on a treeless plain on the main divide the huts are the only shelter. If the Greina were open, people would sleep on it. What closes it is the law.19

The rule: two federal game reserves, with no gap at the border

Two federal game reserves meet on the Greina. The Graubünden side is federal game reserve no. 22 "Pez Vial/Greina", which takes in the whole floor of the Plaun la Greina: an integral part in the west and centre, a partial part along the eastern meanders. The graded pin lies in the partial part, the central plain in the integral part. The Ticino side is no. 24 "Greina", which covers the Ticino Greina with the Val Camadra up to the cantonal border and the land around the Lago di Luzzone; its object sheet says "L'intera bandita è sottoposta a protezione integrale", the whole reserve is under integral protection. The two reserves meet along the border without a gap, so there is no free strip on the saddles either.41

Inside a federal game reserve one sentence of the federal ordinance decides the night:

"Das freie Zelten und Campieren ist verboten. Vorbehalten bleibt die Benutzung offizieller Zeltplätze. Die Kantone können Ausnahmen bewilligen."Verordnung über die eidgenössischen Jagdbanngebiete (VEJ), SR 922.31, Art. 5 Abs. 1 lit. e. In English: free tenting and camping are prohibited; the use of official campsites is reserved; the cantons may grant exceptions.

The partial part is no way out. The sentence names no zone, so it applies along the meanders exactly as on the central plain. There is no official campsite on the plateau. The exception belongs to the cantons alone, and neither Graubünden nor Ticino has granted one for these reserves: no landowner, no alp corporation and no hut can give you a night inside the line. The same article bans hunting, says animals must not be disturbed, keeps dogs on the lead and bans drones.257

The fine is fixed: Anhang 2 Ziff. 12005 of the federal Ordnungsbussenverordnung, "Freies Zelten oder Campieren in eidgenössischen Jagdbanngebieten", CHF 150. A dog off the lead (Ziff. 12004) and a drone in the air (Ziff. 12006) cost CHF 150 each. The CHF 20'000 you may read online is the hunting act's ceiling in ordinary proceedings, not a camper's fine, and the act punishes negligence too, so not having checked where the line runs does not help.3

Where you cross the line. The federal inventory describes each boundary, and on the Greina it names signs near Muot la Greina, at La Camona, on Pass Diesrut, at Crap la Crusch and on the Passo della Greina; on the Graubünden side the canton also paints its reserve boundaries red and yellow, with the red on the reserve side. From the Terri hut you cross the line where the path crosses over to the plain, near Muot la Greina. From Vrin, the path from Pass Diesrut down to La Camona follows it. From Ticino you are inside long before the plateau, because the Val Camadra and the land around the Lago di Luzzone belong to reserve no. 24. The graded pin lies about 600 m inside the edge, the central plain about 1.6 km. On your phone, open map.geo.admin.ch with the layer "Hunting Ban Reserves" and compare it with your GPS position.451

The bivvy bag, and the Ticino rule people quote

The federal ordinance's verbs are "Zelten und Campieren", tenting and camping; the official French text says "camper librement", the Italian "piantare tende o campeggiare". None of the three names the bivouac, and no court has decided whether a night in a bivvy bag in a federal game reserve counts. The same article says animals must not be disturbed, and the object sheet of Pez Vial/Greina lists protection from disturbance among the reserve's aims. So a bivvy bag on the Greina is an open question, not a permission. This report does not tell you it is allowed.24

Ticino's bivouac rule. Ticino's camping law allows camping only on authorised camping areas and then makes one exception: "Fa eccezione al principio di cui al cpv. 1 l'attendamento a scopo di bivacco in montagna", pitching a tent for a mountain bivouac is exempt. People quote it for the Greina, and outside a federal reserve it is what makes a night in the Ticino mountains lawful, as at Lago di Leit. Here it does not help. It is a cantonal exception to a cantonal ban, and it cannot lift the federal ban that covers the whole Ticino side of the plateau, from the Passo della Greina past the Scaletta hut to the Lago di Luzzone.724

Lumnezia allows tents only where its executive says

Take the reserve away, and a tent on the Graubünden floor would still need the commune. Lumnezia's public-order law, the Lescha davart igl uorden public of 23 September 2018, revised at the ballot of 13 February 2022, covers the whole communal territory (Art. 1), and the Greina floor has belonged to Lumnezia since Vrin merged into it in 2013. Its Art. 15, "Campar", is written in Romansh:61

"Campar sco era installar tendas e rulottas habitadas ei lubiu mo sin plazzas definidas dalla suprastonza communala."Lescha davart igl uorden public per la vischnaunca Lumnezia, 111.100, Art. 15 para. 1 "Campar". In English: camping, and putting up tents and inhabited caravans, is allowed only on places defined by the communal executive.

A temporary tent camp, a scout or holiday camp, can be given a place with the executive's permit (para. 2). A breach costs a fine of up to CHF 5'000, for intent or negligence; in light cases the commune may give a warning instead, or no penalty (Art. 33). Lumnezia publishes no list of fixed fines for it. The one camping place the commune names is Camping Davos Munts in Vattiz, down in the Val Lumnezia. The same Art. 15 applies on the small patches of Lumnezia ground outside the reserve, near La Camona and on the way up to Pass Diesrut.61

Other labels on the plateau, and why they do not decide the night

Real, but none of them regulates visitors. The whole plateau lies in BLN object 1913 "Greina-Piz Medel", a federal landscape inventory that binds the authorities, not you. The meander floor is federal floodplain no. 1320 "Plaun la Greina", and the fens around Crap la Crusch are federal fen no. 1715: both ordinances tell the cantons to keep uses, recreation included, in line with the protection aim, and neither addresses a hiker. The Greina is often called a mire landscape of national importance, but the federal inventory of mire landscapes has no object here. The communal zones drawn over the plain, a Greina landscape protection zone, a rest zone and nature protection zones on the meanders under the building law of the former commune of Vrin, and a Greina landscape protection zone on the Sumvitg side, regulate building, terrain changes, lifts and motor traffic, and say nothing about camping. The wildlife rest zones of Val Lavaz and Sutglatscher apply only from 15 December to 30 April and lie off the floor.91

Crossing by day: paths, season, hunt and fire

The usual way to see the Greina is to cross it between huts. The huts give about 2 h 20 to 2 h 30 from the Terri hut over the plain to the Scaletta hut, and about 2 h 20 from Scaletta over Crap la Crusch to the Motterascio hut. From Vrin a Bus alpin line runs up to Parvalsauns, and the path over Pass Diesrut, 2'428 m, and the Punt la Greina suspension bridge reaches the Terri hut in about 4 hours from Puzzatsch. From Sumvitg the Bus alpin runs to Runcahez, about 4 hours below the Terri hut, with chains on exposed steps. The Graubünden Bus alpin lines run until 18 October 2026; the Ticino line to Pian Geirett and the Lago di Luzzone ended on 27 September.10

The hunt. Graubünden's high hunt runs until 30 September 2026, and the small-game hunt starts on 1 October. There is no hunting inside the reserves, but the approaches below them, the lower Val Sumvitg, Alp Diesrut and the Val Lumnezia, are hunting ground. Ticino's high hunt ended on 27 September.57

Fire. An absolute ban on open fires has applied in the Surselva since 26 June 2026. A gas stove on firm ground, never left alone, is allowed; wood, charcoal and petrol are not.5

Dogs and drones. On both sides of the plateau dogs go on the lead and drones stay in the pack, all year: both are rules of the reserves.23

How it is possible: a hut bed at the edge of the plain

There is no lawful night out on the Greina and no consent route to one: only the cantons could make an exception, and neither has. The lawful night is a bed in one of the huts around the plain.257

Camona da Terri SAC, 2'170 m, +41 81 943 12 05, info@terrihuette.ch. 94 beds on the northern rim of the plain, in Sumvitg. Staffed this year until about 17 October 2026; book online, and bring a hut sleeping bag or rent one for CHF 7. When the hut is not staffed, a shelter room with 5 places stays open.10

On the Ticino side. The Capanna Scaletta of the SAT Lucomagno, 2'205 m, 52 beds, closes on Sunday 4 October 2026; online booking is compulsory, +41 91 872 26 28, and from 2026 it no longer takes dogs. Its winter refuge has 10 places and a wood stove and cannot be booked. The Capanna Michela Motterascio of the CAS Ticino, 2'172 m, 70 beds, is open until Saturday 10 October 2026, +41 91 872 16 22. On the western approach, the Medelserhütte SAC at 2'524 m is staffed until about 18 October, but closed from Thursday 1 October until 11.00 on Friday 2 October.10

For a tent: the valley. The one camping place Lumnezia names is Camping Davos Munts in Vattiz, open until 18 October 2026, +41 79 611 02 11, contact@davosmunts.ch. Sumvitg's communal tent place, the forest clearing at Runcahez, is open only from 1 May to 15 September.1068

Outside the reserves, and still not a free pitch. The only flat ground near the plateau outside both reserves is a stream flat 150 to 250 m south-west of the Terri hut, at about 2'130 m. It is communal alp of Sumvitg, and Sumvitg bans tenting and camping on its public ground; in exceptional cases the Gemeindevorstand, the communal executive, can allow tenting elsewhere on a written and reasoned application (Art. 2 para. 2 of its camping regulation). So it is outside the reserve, but ask Sumvitg in writing first. It lies in plain view of the hut.81

  • Not on the plain, not on the saddles, not anywhere on the Ticino side of the plateau. Federal game reserves Pez Vial/Greina and Greina, CHF 150, and on the Graubünden floor Lumnezia's rule on tents as well.236

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which near the Greina means a pitch at Camping Davos Munts in the valley. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense on a plateau that is a game reserve from one side to the other, with a federal floodplain and fens on its floor.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The verdict rests on the boundaries of federal game reserves no. 22 Pez Vial/Greina and no. 24 Greina as published in the federal inventory, on Art. 5 of the federal ordinance on game reserves and the federal list of fixed fines, on the absence of any published exception by Graubünden or Ticino, and on Art. 15 of Lumnezia's public-order law. Whether a tentless bivouac counts as camping under the federal ordinance has not been decided by a court. Lumnezia publishes no list of the places its executive defines and no fixed fine. The protected-area boundaries and every distance here are taken from the published geometry, which is as accurate as the data and not as a marker on the ground: where signs, paint and map seem to disagree, stay on the safe side. Hut seasons, dates and bus lines are taken from their operators as of September 2026 and can change; nothing posted on the plateau was checked on site. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Frequently asked questions

Can I camp on the Greina plateau?
No. The whole floor of the Plaun la Greina lies in federal game reserve no. 22 Pez Vial/Greina, and the Ticino side of the plateau in no. 24 Greina; the two meet at the cantonal border without a gap. In both, Art. 5 Abs. 1 lit. e of the federal ordinance on game reserves (VEJ, SR 922.31) bans free tenting and camping, with a fixed fine of CHF 150 under Anhang 2 Ziff. 12005 of the federal fixed-penalty ordinance (OBV, SR 314.11); only the canton can grant an exception, and neither Graubünden nor Ticino has. On the Graubünden floor Lumnezia's public-order law also allows tents only on places the communal executive defines (Art. 15), with a fine of up to CHF 5'000. The ground itself is dry, flat and far above the tree line; it is the law that closes it. You can check the reserves on map.geo.admin.ch, layer "Hunting Ban Reserves". Does the Ticino bivouac rule help?
Not on the Greina. Ticino's camping law (Legge sui campeggi, RL 943.100) allows camping only on authorised areas and exempts "l'attendamento a scopo di bivacco in montagna", a tent pitched for a mountain bivouac (Art. 2 cpv. 2). That is a cantonal exception to a cantonal ban. It cannot lift the federal ban of Art. 5 Abs. 1 lit. e VEJ, and the whole Ticino side of the plateau, with the Val Camadra, the Scaletta hut and the land around the Lago di Luzzone, lies in federal game reserve no. 24 Greina, under integral protection. Outside a federal reserve the Ticino rule does apply, which is why people quote it; here it does not.
Is a bivvy bag allowed?
Nobody can tell you it is. The federal ordinance bans free tenting and camping (VEJ, SR 922.31, Art. 5 Abs. 1 lit. e); its French text says "camper librement", the Italian "piantare tende o campeggiare", and none of the three names the bivouac. No court has ruled on a night in a bivvy bag in a federal game reserve, and the same article says animals must not be disturbed. So it is an open question, not a permission, on a plateau that is a game reserve from one side to the other. The Terri, Scaletta and Motterascio huts stand at its edge.
Where can I sleep instead?
In a hut. The Camona da Terri SAC at 2'170 metres on the northern rim has 94 beds, is staffed until about 17 October 2026 and keeps a shelter room with 5 places open all year, +41 81 943 12 05. The Capanna Scaletta at 2'205 metres on the Ticino side has 52 beds and closes on Sunday 4 October 2026, +41 91 872 26 28; its winter refuge has 10 places and cannot be booked. The Capanna Michela Motterascio at 2'172 metres has 70 beds and is open until Saturday 10 October 2026, +41 91 872 16 22. For a tent, Camping Davos Munts in Vattiz, the one camping place Lumnezia names, is open until 18 October 2026. The usual way to see the plateau is to cross it by day: Terri to Scaletta about 2 h 30, Scaletta to Motterascio about 2 h 20.
Is there any ground outside the game reserve?
Near the plateau, one stream flat: 150 to 250 metres south-west of the Terri hut, at about 2'130 metres, outside both reserves. It is communal alp of Sumvitg, and Sumvitg's camping regulation of 2016 bans tenting and camping on the commune's public ground (Art. 1 and 2); the Gemeindevorstand may allow tenting elsewhere in exceptional cases, on a written and reasoned application (Art. 2 Abs. 2). So it is outside the reserve, but ask Sumvitg in writing first. The small patches outside the reserve near La Camona and on the way to Pass Diesrut are Lumnezia ground, where tents are allowed only on places the executive defines (Art. 15). The BLN binds the authorities (NHG, SR 451, Art. 6). Federal floodplain no. 1320 "Plaun la Greina", 38.97 ha, and federal fen no. 1715 "Crap la Crusch", 15.08 ha, mostly in Ticino: the Auenverordnung (SR 451.31, Art. 5 para. 2 lit. c) and the Flachmoorverordnung (SR 451.33, Art. 5) require the cantons to keep uses, recreation included, in line with the protection aim; neither addresses visitors. The federal inventory of mire landscapes has no object on the Greina; the nearest are Alp Nadéls, Lucomagno/Dötra and San Bernardino. Lescha da baghegiar of the former commune of Vrin, still the zoning law of the plain: Art. 58b landscape protection zone Greina, Art. 59 rest zone and Art. 57 nature protection zone regulate building, terrain changes, lifts, motor traffic and other disturbing uses, with no rule on camping.
