Wild camping on the Wiriehore

The Wiriehore is the grass summit at 2'304 metres above the Diemtigtal, skied in winter and walked up from the Wiriehorn lift in summer. The summit is outside every reserve, and what decides a tent there is the commune's own police reglement: on private ground, camping is allowed only with the landowner's prior permission. Whom to ask is the question, and this article answers it as far as the record lets it.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. The full difference: wild camping vs bivouacking.

The rule is consent, and the reglement says whose

Wild camping on the Wiriehore is decided by four pages the commune of Diemtigen adopted on 30 November 2005 and has served as its current police reglement ever since. Two of its articles are about tents, and they split the world by who owns the ground.

"Das Campieren auf privatem Grund ausserhalb von Campingplätzen ist nur dann gestattet, wenn vorgängig eine Bewilligung des Grundeigentümers eingeholt wurde."Gemeindepolizeireglement der Gemischten Gemeinde Diemtigen, in force since 1 January 2006, art. 9 para. 1: camping on private ground outside campsites is permitted only if the landowner's permission has been obtained beforehand.

Art. 8 is the public-ground twin: "Auf öffentlichem Grund ist das Übernachten in Fahrzeugen und Zelten (Campieren) ausserhalb der speziell dafür vorgesehenen Flächen verboten", with para. 2 letting the commune permit exceptions in justified cases. Art. 11 fines a breach of either at up to CHF 5'000. So the reglement does not ban a tent on the alps of the Diemtigtal. It conditions it, on one concrete action: get the owner's yes first, or, on communal ground, the commune's. That is the paradigm "it depends", and it is the whole verdict.2

The verb, for people with a bivvy bag. Art. 8 defines the act it regulates as "das Übernachten in Fahrzeugen und Zelten (Campieren)", and art. 9 reuses that word. Tents and vehicles are named; a night in a sleeping bag with no tent is outside the wording of both articles. We say so because the text says so, and we hedge it because the ground is still somebody's working alp and the park's rangers read "Wildcampieren" more broadly than the reglement does. Ask anyway; the person who can say yes is the same person either way.28

Which branch applies we could not close. The summit sits on alp parcel 138, the Alp Wirie side, with parcel 101, the Gurbs side, beginning 0.6 metres east along the ridge. The Bernese land register is behind a login and the cadastre extract carries no owner, so whether parcel 138 belongs to a farmer, a Bergschaft or the Einwohnergemeinde is the one fact this article lacks. It changes the phone number, not the rule: both branches ask for a prior yes, and the Naturpark's own summary of the law reads exactly that way: "Wildes Campieren ist in Natur- und Wildtierschutzgebieten sowie auf Gemeindeboden verboten und nur mit Genehmigung auf Privatgrundstücken erlaubt."38

Nothing else in the commune reaches a tent. All 49 published reglements were downloaded and searched with controls, three of them by OCR. The Baureglement of 2023 mentions camping only as the zone type of the Camping Eggmatte; the Kurtaxenreglement taxes nights "in Alphütten, Zelten, Wohnwagen und dergleichen" through the host, which a bivouac does not have; the Naturparkreglement is organisational. The police reglement is the only communal act with a rule of conduct for a tent, and canton Bern has no camping norm of general application, as this series established in the Haslital and re-checked here.35

Whom to ask on the way up

Alp Wirie first. The normal route from Nüegg, the top of the Wiriehorn chairlift at 1'398 metres, passes the Alp Wirie hut at about 1'857 metres before the north ridge. The west flank and the crest parcel are its upper pasture, and in the season the tenant is the person the reglement means by Grundeigentümer's permission, or the one who can tell you who is. We found no published name, number or fee for Wirie, and no account anywhere of anyone having asked or paid to sleep on the Wiriehore, so we print no franc figure: there is none to hedge.78

The park office knows. Naturpark Diemtigtal and Diemtigtal Tourismus share one desk, Bahnhofstrasse 20, 3753 Oey, +41 33 552 26 00, info@diemtigtal.ch, weekday mornings and afternoons, Saturday mornings. The park runs the rangers, publishes the rules and knows every alp tenant in the valley; it is the one call that can name the owner of parcel 138 and say whether you are in art. 8 or art. 9.8

The commune for the other branch. Einwohnergemeinde Diemtigen, Diemtigtalstrasse 15, 3753 Oey, Gemeindeschreiberei +41 33 681 80 20, info@diemtigen.ch, for an art. 8 para. 2 exception if the summit turns out to be communal ground. The Wiriehornbahnen AG, +41 33 684 12 33, runs the lift, the Berghotel and the summer trails and publishes nothing about tents; they are the bed alternative, not the consent route.28

Expect to meet a ranger. The park writes that from 2020 visitor pressure grew "besonders durch Wildcampieren, Abfall und Störungen des Privateigentums", set up a ranger service from 2021, and that its three rangers "kontrollieren die Situation vor Ort, greifen bei Bedarf ein und melden Schäden". The pressure the park describes is on the valley floor and the lakes, not on this summit, but the service is real and the reglement gives the commune a fine to back it. A yes obtained beforehand is what turns that encounter into a conversation.8

The lines around the summit: two reserves and a winter zone

Every federal layer is empty at the summit, with both controls passing: no game reserve (Kiental is 19 kilometres east), no BLN, no mire, no floodplain, no forest reserve. The one hit is the Naturpark Diemtigtal, a regional nature park, which is a label and a charter binding the commune and gives a visitor no rule of its own; its "Naturparkregeln" are requests, and their camping line restates the police reglement.18

Canton Bern's instrument is the Wildschutzgebiet, area by area under the Wildtierschutzverordnung, and it is the one that bans camping in this canton. The Diemtigtal's Wildraum holds thirteen of them. We resolved their perimeters from the canton's own geodata and checked the summit point against every one: it is inside none. The nearest is Höllersberg, no. 105, 976 metres north-west, the wooded slope above the Fildrich valley, whose object sheet carries the Kategorie F sentence in full.4

"Wintersport und Winterwandern sind ausserhalb der bezeichneten Routen verboten. Freies/wildes Campieren und Biwakieren sind verboten."Jagdinspektorat des Kantons Bern, Objektblatt Höllersberg (Nr. 105), Kategorie F under WTSchV BSG 922.63 art. 3: winter sport and winter walking off the marked routes are prohibited; free or wild camping and bivouacking are prohibited. Year-round.

Note the verb pair: "Campieren und Biwakieren". Inside a Wildschutzgebiet the tentless reading that helps under the communal reglement is gone. The normal route stays outside Höllersberg, Nüegg by 476 metres and Alp Wirie by 578 metres. To the south lies Fildrich, no. 10: its outer zone 1a, hunting rule only, begins 1'054 metres south and takes in the Gurbssattel; its core zone 1c, which carries the same camping and bivouac sentence, begins 1'905 metres south-south-west and covers the Underste and Oberste Gurbs meadows. Do not drop off the Gurbssattel into the Gurbs bowls for the night. A breach is fined under the cantonal hunting act, up to CHF 20'000 in ordinary proceedings; we found no Bernese fixed-penalty tariff for it and quote none.45

The winter zone on the east face. The federal portal carries a communal wildlife rest zone "Diemtigen Wiriehore (Nr. 30.00)", status empfohlen, recommended, from the commune's Landschaftsrichtplan of 1997: 1 November to 31 March, "Bitte nicht betreten, durchqueren nur auf eingezeichneter Route". Its polygon is the east face below the ridge and its western edge runs along the crest 10.6 metres east of the summit point; the summit, the north ridge and the crest west of it are outside. A communal Richtplan binds the authorities, not the public, under the cantonal building act, and this one is a winter instrument for a summit that is a popular ski-touring goal. In that window keep to the ridge route and off the east side; in summer it says nothing.56

One correction to our own earlier note. Since the 2024 revision of the Wildtierschutzverordnung the federal rest-zone portal carries many of Bern's Wildschutzgebiete, Höllersberg and Fildrich among them. It still does not carry all of them, the Oeschinensee test we use as a control still returns nothing, so a clean sweep in Bern is confirmed here against the canton's own GeoPackage rather than trusted on its own.46

The summit crest, and why the pitch is the summit

The pin is the summit, LV95 2'606'977 / 1'158'779, 2'304 metres, and for once the pin is also the pitch. The Wiriehore is a pointed grass top at the north-west end of the Gurbsgrat: the east face drops at 33 to 59 degrees within ten metres of the top, the south face is a wall with the climbing route in it, the west flank a uniform 20 to 39 degree grass slope down to Alp Wirie, and the north ridge is the ascent, about 12 degrees on average over the first hundred metres. Along the crest running south-west from the top a 5-metre transect reads 2'304.0, 2'304.2, 2'303.4, 2'303.5, 2'302.3, 2'302.4, 2'301.0 and 2'300.2 metres over 35 metres: a grass crest 35 metres long and roughly 10 wide, room for one small tent or a bivvy bag, exposed on every side, with the east cliff ten metres from the door.7

On a 25-metre grid the cell 35 metres west-south-west of the top, 2'606'952 / 1'158'754 at 2'299 metres, is 5.7 degrees, and the cell 125 metres down the same crest, 2'606'902 / 1'158'679 at 2'268 metres, is 4.8 degrees, the flattest within 150 metres and the fallback if the top is too windy. Within ten metres either side of the crest the ground is already 20 degrees on the west and over 30 on the east. All of these cells lie on parcel 138, outside the recommended winter zone by 28 to 44 metres and outside every Wildschutzgebiet by at least 976.7

Water and trees. There is no water on the summit or the ridge; the nearest is the Wiriegrabe headwater above Alp Wirie and the springs above Gurbs Metteberg, 400 to 700 metres of descent. Carry it up. Scattered conifers end around 1'900 to 2'050 metres on the south-east side and the west is open pasture from Alp Wirie up, so the summit is 250 to 400 metres above the tree line.7

Access. From Nüegg, 1'398 metres, the top of the Wiriehorn chairlift, past Alp Wirie and up the north ridge on the marked Bergwanderweg, about three hours and 900 metres of ascent, the last stretch steep and on a ridge. The commune boundary is more than three kilometres away in every direction, so nothing here crosses into another reglement. In winter the Wiriehore is a ski-touring summit, which is what the east-face rest zone is about.67

  • On the summit crest, with the owner's yes obtained beforehand. Ask at Alp Wirie on the way up, or ring the Naturpark office, +41 33 552 26 00, before you go; if the ground is communal, the commune, +41 33 681 80 20. One small tent, no fire, gone at dawn.28
  • The Berghotel Wiriehorn at 1'418 metres, 2.3 kilometres north and 900 metres lower, run by the lift company, +41 33 684 12 42.8
  • Camping Eggmatte in Schwenden, about 3.6 kilometres west-south-west at 1'180 metres, the valley's official site.8
  • Not in Wildschutzgebiet Höllersberg north-west of the route or in the Fildrich core zone in the Gurbs meadows, in any season; not on the east face between 1 November and 31 March; and not on the crest without the yes.

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which here means the summit crest with the owner's prior yes. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense, and on a ten-metre-wide crest in a valley with a ranger service it matters more than usual.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Disclaimer

This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of September 2026. It is based on the publicly accessible and official sources linked below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement of the current legal situation.

The owner of the summit parcel could not be established from the public record, so whether art. 8 or art. 9 of the Diemtigen police reglement governs the crest is open; both require a prior permission and this article says so. Nobody has walked the summit for us: a private no-camping board at Alp Wirie or on the crest would change the practical advice. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself, check the fire warning, and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed on the Wiriehore?
Only with the landowner's prior permission. Art. 9 para. 1 of the Gemeindepolizeireglement Diemtigen permits camping on private ground outside campsites only if the owner's permission has been obtained beforehand; art. 8 bans it on public ground unless the commune permits an exception; art. 11 fines a breach at up to CHF 5'000. The summit is outside every federal inventory and every cantonal Wildschutzgebiet, so the yes is the whole question.
Whom do I ask for permission to camp on the Wiriehore?
The Alp Wirie tenant, the Naturpark office, or the commune. The summit crest is the upper pasture of Alp Wirie, whose hut lies on the normal route; the Naturpark Diemtigtal office in Oey, +41 33 552 26 00, knows every tenant and can name the owner of the summit parcel; the Einwohnergemeinde Diemtigen, +41 33 681 80 20, handles the public-ground exception if the ground is communal. No fee or standing arrangement is reported.
Is the Wiriehore in a Wildschutzgebiet?
No, but two lie close. Wildschutzgebiet Höllersberg begins 976 m north-west of the summit and bans free camping and bivouacking all year; the Fildrich core zone with the same ban begins 1'905 m south-south-west in the Gurbs meadows, and Fildrich's outer zone, hunting rule only, 1'054 m south. The normal route from Nüegg via Alp Wirie stays outside all of them.
Does the winter wildlife rest zone on the Wiriehore ban camping?
It is a recommendation for the east face, 1 November to 31 March. The communal zone "Diemtigen Wiriehore (Nr. 30)" from the 1997 Landschaftsrichtplan is listed as recommended, not binding, and its edge runs 10.6 m east of the summit point. In that window stay on the ridge route and off the east side; in summer it says nothing.
Is there room for a tent on the Wiriehore summit?
One small one. The summit crest is about 35 m long and 10 m wide at 2'300 to 2'304 m, with the east cliff ten metres away, the south face a wall and the west flank a 20 to 39 degree grass slope. The flattest cells are 35 m west-south-west of the top at 5.7 degrees and 125 m down the crest at 4.8 degrees. No water anywhere near; the tree line is 250 to 400 m below.
