Wild camping at the Wägitalersee

The Wägitalersee is the 4.4 km reservoir at the end of the Wägital, 900 m up, with a road round it, a village and a dam at one end and farms along the east shore. No law in Schwyz or Innerthal fines a tent here, and no reserve touches the water. That is not a place to sleep: every flat metre here is a farmyard, a hay meadow or lakebed, and nobody who owns it says yes. The night belongs on the Bockmattli.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. What the Wägitalersee is: a working reservoir with a road round it

Wild camping at the Wägitalersee is a question people ask from the Seestrasse, looking across the water at the Bockmattli towers. The pin, LV95 2'712'340 / 1'216'505, is the federal gazetteer's label point for the lake and sits on open water, 889.8 m on the day of the query. The lake is a hydro reservoir of 4.18 km², 4.4 km long, held by the Schräh dam at its north end since the 1920s, when 37 farms and the old village went under it. The AG Kraftwerk Wägital runs it under a concession of the Bezirk March that fixes the maximum level at 901.00 m and expires on 31 December 2040; the working band is 880 to 900 m, which means the shoreline moves by up to 20 m of height across the year and the deltas are gravel and mud in spring.114

Everything at lake level is below the treeline and beside a public road. The Seestrasse runs down the west shore from the village to the Au bridge at the south end, a second road comes back up the east shore past the farms of Ziggen and Oberhof, and the ring is just over 12 km. The village of Innerthal and its dam fill the north end, the west shore above the road is steep forest, the east shore is meadow with farmhouses.314

So the first question is not the law but the ground: is there any level metre on this shore that a person would sleep on if it were allowed? A 25 m grid was laid over the lake and its 150 m shore band, the water masked out, and every cell under 8 degrees kept. Seventy-four cells survive, and they collapse into three places. The Schlierenbach fan on the west shore, 2'711'590 / 1'217'225 at 904.9 m: a torrent delta with a road bridge and a farmstead on it, the nearest building 7 m from the flattest cell, the Seestrasse 15 m away, the whole plot in the red hazard zone of the cadastre, the zone for debris flows and floods. The Au delta at the south end, 2'712'000 / 1'214'300 at 897.9 m: the inflow of the Wägitaler Aa and the Fläschlibach at the road end, 18 m inside the cadastral shoreline and 3 m below the full-pool level of 901 m, which means it is lakebed, dry only while the reservoir is drawn down, with the Restaurant Au 92 m away and, from 16 September, a fishing rest zone 100 m round the inflow. And the Oberhof meadow on the east shore, 2'713'240 / 1'216'575 at 931.5 m: a farmed hay meadow in the agricultural zone, the road 26 m away, the farm buildings of Oberhof 78 to 86 m away, twelve addresses within 150 m. The rest is the village meadow by the dam with 15 buildings within 100 m, a farm on the Ziggen headland, and one forest strip on the west shore pinched between the Seestrasse, 33 m, and the water, in the red hazard zone.23

There is no cell on this shore that is off the road, out of sight of a house and above the line the water reaches. That settles the verdict before any statute is opened, and it is the reason the chip says "not allowed" and not "illegal": the law, checked below, has nothing against you here. The shore has.

Canton Schwyz: camping is banned in listed reserves, and none of them touches the lake

The federal layers first. At the pin and at all three shore candidates the identify sweep returns nothing: no federal game reserve, no wildlife rest zone (canton Schwyz designates none), no BLN object, no mire, floodplain, amphibian or dry-meadow object, no forest reserve, no park, no military perimeter, with the invalid-layer control returning HTTP 400 and the positive control hitting the Kiental game reserve on every run. So neither the hunting ordinance nor the fixed-penalty ordinance has a perimeter here.2

Canton Schwyz has no general camping ban. Its planning and building act uses camping words twice, and neither reaches a rucksack tent: § 18 lists campsites as a type of recreation zone, and § 70 says caravans, mobile homes and the like may be set up for use of more than 48 hours only on authorised campsites.4 The nature and landscape act carries exactly one camping sentence, in § 9a para. 3, and it applies inside the plant reserves listed in the act's annex only:5

"In den im Anhang aufgeführten Pflanzenschutzreservaten dürfen mit Ausnahme der Neophyten oder Problempflanzen der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzung keine Pflanzen und Pilze gepflückt, ausgegraben oder ausgerissen werden. Das Campieren ist untersagt."Gesetz über den Landschafts- und Naturschutz of the canton of Schwyz, SRSZ 721.110, § 9a para. 3: in the plant reserves listed in the annex, camping is prohibited.

One of those reserves is in the Wägital: the Zindlenspitz, east of the lake. Queried on the canton's own map layer, with the summit as a positive control, it returns nothing at the pin, at the three shore candidates, at the village or on the Bockmattli. Its nearest boundary is 2'117 m from the Oberhof meadow and 2'138 m from the Au delta. The lake is outside.5

The same picture comes from the money side. Schwyz writes its fixed penalties into an exhaustive list, and the camping tariffs in it are two: CHF 150 for breaching the camping ban inside the cantonal nature reserves under nine named protection ordinances, from the Frauenwinkel to the Hopfräben, and CHF 100 for breaching the plant-reserve rule of § 9a. The Wägitalersee is under none of them; the cadastre lists the cantonal nature-protection theme as "not concerned" for all three shore parcels, and the canton's own layers are empty at every candidate with a positive control at the Schwantenau. The government's report on the 2021 revision of that list says it in one sentence: camping has so far been banned only in the cantonal nature reserves, not even in the plant reserves, which the revision then added.63

The only cantonal text written for this exact shore is the angling ordinance for the Wägitalersee, in force since 1 January 2025. It is a fishing rule, not a camping rule, but it is primary evidence for what the shore is. Art. 7 allows fishing from the bank or a boat, bans it from the dam, the bridges and the roads, and "innerhalb der signalisierten Betretungsverbote", and adds that farmed zones may be crossed only on the existing paths from the road to the water. Art. 12 bans night fishing, and Art. 15 closes 100 m round the Aa and Schlierenbach inflows from 16 September to 15 October. Signposted no-entry sections and farmers' meadows crossed on paths: that is the shore the canton describes.7

Innerthal: ten regulations, none about a tent, and signs nobody has put in writing

The commune of Innerthal publishes its regulations in one list, and it is still the same list as in August: waste, building, two versions of the electricity rules, fire brigade, cemetery, sewers, parking fees, the freezer plant and water supply. Ten documents. There is no police regulation, no camping regulation and no visitor-tax regulation, and in this canton those are the texts a communal camping ban would live in.8

The building regulation in force, approved on 22 June 2021 and named as such by the cadastre, was read in full: no tent, camping, bivouac, overnight or entry clause. It does have a nature-protection zone article, and the cadastre draws five of those polygons along the south-west shore, fen meadows on the old lake floor. Art. 27 tells the owner what not to do with them: no buildings, no soil improvement, no fertiliser or pesticide, one cut a year between September and March. It says nothing about walking in or sleeping there; it binds the farmer, not the visitor. Art. 28 on the watercourse space is a building rule as well.8 The parking regulation of 2002 meters the lots behind the Gasthaus Stausee and along the Seestrasse at CHF 7 per 24 hours, all year, and its only word about overnight vehicles is that motorhomes, unlike buses and lorries, do not get the 24 hours free. No night-parking ban, no camping clause.9

What about the "camping forbidden" signs? Three visitor reports from different years say camping is banned all round the lake, and the angling ordinance speaks of signposted no-entry sections, so boards exist. But no photograph, no wording, no issuer, no court order and no fine has been found for them, the cantonal gazette portal carries court bans for Sattel, Schwyz, Arth, Morschach and Lauerz this year and none for Innerthal, and the portal only reaches back to January 2026, so an older court ban on the lake parcel cannot be ruled out either way. Read them for what they can be shown to be: an owner's refusal, which is enough to make the night a trespass on private ground, and not a norm with a tariff behind it.107

Whose ground it is: the power company's lakebed, the farmers' meadows, and nobody to ask

The reservoir parcel is 4.49 km², and the concession of 1961 tells you whose it is. § 18 counts "das Areal des Stausees Innerthal" among the works of the AG Kraftwerk Wägital, which at the end of the concession passes half to the Bezirk March and half to the canton; § 12 obliges the company to compensate "die Besitzer der Ufergrundstücke längs des Stausees" for what the impoundment does to them, which is why the shore above the works is a patchwork of private farm parcels; and § 14 puts bathing establishments, boats and ice-cutting under conditions to be agreed with the company. The land register itself is not public in Schwyz, so the company as owner of the lake parcel is an inference from the concession, stated here as such. The Schlierenbach plot and the Oberhof meadow are small private parcels, a house plot and a farm field.13

That matters because the Swiss Civil Code lets an owner keep people off private ground and remove them, Art. 641 para. 2 and Art. 926, with no need for a bylaw, and the criminal code's trespass article, Art. 186, adds a criminal complaint where the ground is an enclosed yard, which the Schlierenbach farmstead is, 7 m from the flattest cell. On ground like this the question is not "is it banned" but "who says yes", and the answer is nobody. The company has no website and publishes no rules for its shore; Axpo's and ewz's pages carry history and hydrology. The commune publishes nothing on the lake, on bathing places or fireplaces. The one public counter on the shore is the fishing tenant's office at Seestrasse 2, which issues day patents for CHF 30 to 34, rents boats and paddle boards and knows which sections carry the no-entry boards, and it does not own the ground and offers no camping. The farms at Oberhof, Ziggen, Au and on the Schlierenbach fan could each be asked, and no standing arrangement, fee or named tenant who says yes has surfaced anywhere. That is the difference between "it depends" and "not allowed": there is no route here, only a fresh negotiation on somebody's doorstep.1112

  • The Chälen shelf on the Bockmattli, 1'849 m, LV95 2'714'850 / 1'217'275, in the same commune: the one verified legal night in the Wägital, above the treeline, on unzoned communal ground with no norm at any level, 1.9 km clear of the Zindlenspitz plant reserve. From Innerthal (906 m) by way of the Schwarzenegg it is about two hours and 940 m of climb; carry water, the only pond is 541 m away and 8 m across.513
  • Bockmattlihütte, about 1'450 m under the north-west face, on that same path: a small guest room, staffed at weekends from late April to the end of October, info@bockmattli.ch, +41 79 827 30 66.13
  • A bed at the lake: Fischers Lodge at Seestrasse 5, simple rooms with shared bathrooms, +41 79 466 03 77, hallo@fischerslodge.ch; the Gasthaus Stausee in the village, about 15 rooms with lake view.13
  • A tent on a campsite: the nearest is Camping Vorauen at the Klöntalersee (GL), a natural site without pitches or reservations, open 1 May to 30 September 2026. Camping Euthal at the Sihlsee no longer takes tents, and the campsite at Vorderthal closed in 2017.13
  • Getting out: PostAuto line 523 runs Siebnen-Wangen to Innerthal; since the December 2025 timetable the last bus leaves Innerthal at 20.59, check the day's times. Fires: no ban in Schwyz on 16 September 2026, and in a drought the canton can impose one, tariff CHF 250.146
  • Not the shore. A farmyard on a torrent fan, a delta the reservoir covers, and a hay meadow in front of the farmhouses, all beside the road and all private.

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which in the Wägital means the Chälen shelf on the Bockmattli and nowhere at the lake. It is not legal text, but decency and common sense, and on ground where nobody can fine you it is the only rule there is.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The owner of the reservoir parcel is inferred from the 1961 concession, because the Schwyz land register is not public; the wording and issuer of the signs round the lake could not be established; the cantonal gazette portal only reaches back to January 2026, so an older court ban on the lake parcel cannot be excluded; and the Bezirk March's proposed general parking ban round the lake, announced in 2024, could not be confirmed either way. The shore zones and distances are computed from the cadastre and federal geodata, not measured on the ground. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions and signs on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed at the Wägitalersee?
Nothing forbids it, and we still say no. No federal inventory reaches the shore, canton Schwyz bans camping only inside its listed nature and plant reserves, none of which touches the lake, and Innerthal's ten regulations contain no camping clause. But the shore is a road-served valley floor below the treeline, and its flat ground is a farmyard, a delta below the full-pool line and a farmed meadow in front of houses, all private, with nobody who publishes a yes. A night there is a night on someone's ground without permission, not a wild camp.
What is the fine?
None here. The Schwyz fixed-penalty list tariffs camping at CHF 150 inside the cantonal nature reserves under nine named protection ordinances and at CHF 100 inside the plant reserves; the Wägitalersee is under neither, and the commune has no police regulation. What stands behind the signs is the owner's right under the Civil Code to keep people off private ground, and on the enclosed farmyard at the Schlierenbach a trespass complaint under Art. 186 of the Criminal Code.
Can I sleep in the van on the parking lot?
The parking regulation does not forbid it. The communal lots at the Gasthaus Stausee and along the Seestrasse cost CHF 7 per 24 hours all year, and the only clause on motorhomes says they pay like cars rather than getting the free 24 hours that buses and lorries get. A visitor reported in 2021 that a night in a camper on the paid Innerthal lot was tolerated. The Bezirk March's proposed general parking ban round the rest of the lake, announced in 2024, could not be confirmed; the metered communal lots would be unaffected by it.
Where is the Zindlenspitz plant reserve, and does it matter?
East of the lake, 2.1 km from the nearest shore candidate, and no. It is one of the cantonal plant reserves in the annex of the nature and landscape act, where § 9a para. 3 bans camping at CHF 100. Queried on the canton's own layer, it returns nothing at the pin, on the shore, in the village or on the Bockmattli; its nearest boundary is 2'117 m from the Oberhof meadow and 1'859 m from the Chälen shelf. It changes nothing at the lake.
Where do I sleep then?
On the Bockmattli or in a bed. The Chälen shelf at 1'849 m, in the same commune, is the verified legal night in the Wägital, about two hours up from Innerthal; the Bockmattlihütte on the way has a small guest room at weekends. At the lake: Fischers Lodge, +41 79 466 03 77, or the Gasthaus Stausee. Nearest tent campsite: Camping Vorauen in the Klöntal, 1 May to 30 September. Last bus out of Innerthal 20.59.

Art. 27 Naturschutzzone: "1 Die im Anhang B aufgeführten Naturschutzzonen sind in ihrem Bestand sowie in ihrer Qualität zu erhalten, zu fördern, zu unterhalten, und wo diese beeinträchtigt sind, wiederherzustellen. 2 Eingriffe, welche den Bestand gefährden, sind untersagt.
