Wild camping on the Rophaien

A night on the Rophaien is lawful. Korporation Uri, the landowner, publishes a standing yes that needs no registration, and its condition up here is a hello to the alp staff if you pitch near a working alp. The summit itself is too steep for a tent.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. The full difference: wild camping vs bivouacking.

Three layers, three communes, and no rule that reaches this summit

An absence is only worth something if you can say what was actually read. Here is every layer at the Rophaien, named, with the number behind it.

Federal. Queried at the summit on 31 August 2026: hunting-ban districts, wildlife rest zones, parks of national importance, floodplains, raised and lowland mires, moor landscapes, amphibian spawning sites, Ramsar and Emerald sites all return a genuinely empty result set, and a deliberately invalid layer id surfaced as HTTP 400 in the same runs, so the zeros are real zeros. Two federal layers do answer. One is BLN object 1606, "Vierwaldstättersee mit Kernwald, Bürgenstock und Rigi": a landscape inventory that binds authorities when they decide on projects, writes no rule and no fine for a camper, and whose object sheet contains no camping provision at all; the only "Zelt" in it hides inside the word "vereinzelt". The other is the forest reserve, and it gets its own section below.1

Cantonal. Uri has no cantonal wild-camping ban. For this article the whole protection register of the Urner Rechtsbuch, RB 10.5100 to 10.5144 plus 10.5200 to 10.5214, was walked act by act, every in-force text scanned with control counts. And Uri can write a tent ban, which is what makes that zero worth something: it writes them for named perimeters. The reglement for the south shore of the Urnersee, RB 10.5110, forbids in as many words "zu lagern, zu zelten und zu campieren sowie Standplätze zu diesen Zwecken zu überlassen", to encamp, to pitch tents and to camp, and to provide pitches for those purposes: its zone is the Reussdelta shore at lake level, roughly 5 km south-west of this summit, and it had to be read because Flüelen is one of its perimeter communes. The Maderanertal has its ban (RB 10.5111), the Urnerboden moors have theirs (RB 10.5112), the Aue Rüti has the newest (RB 10.5127). Each names its ground. None of them is this mountain.2 The landowner's own map service says the same thing from the other side: the Korporation publishes an atlas of eight map sheets for campers, each titled "Zeltverbot", and they are exactly those register zones. No sheet exists for the Rophaien.3

Communal. Three communes touch this mountain and its benches, and all three collections were downloaded completely and read, scans put through text recognition, every file with control counts. Flüelen, which holds the summit side: 33 published acts, no Polizeireglement, no camping act; the only camping word in its zoning act is an enabling clause for "Campinganlagen" in the village sport zone, the opposite of a ban. Sisikon, whose boundary is the summit crest itself, 1 m from the cross: 14 acts, its scanned zoning act read in full over 57 pages, same picture. Bürglen, which begins at the Fläschsee side: 37 acts, a zoning act with zero camping terms, and a visitor tax that only reaches people who pay for their bed.6 What the communes do have is small print: Flüelen's Ortstaxe would in principle like one franc from every overnighting guest, Sisikon one franc fifty. No case of a bivouac being chased for it has ever surfaced.6

So nothing prohibits it, at any level, and each zero has a positive control behind it. What remains is the question every Swiss night outside ends on: the landowner. Here the landowner has answered in advance, in writing.

The landowner allows wild camping in writing, and names its exceptions

On most Swiss mountains you sleep on silence: no norm against you, nobody who said yes. The Rophaien is Korporation ground, and Korporation Uri has published its yes, the same standing permission that already carries our reports for the Bälmeten and the Surenenpass.

"Im Kanton Uri besteht kein generelles Verbot für Wildcamping. Auf Gebiet der Korporation Uri ist das Campieren somit grundsätzlich erlaubt und muss nicht angemeldet werden."Korporation Uri, information page "Wildcampieren/Biwakieren", consulted 31 August 2026.

In English: in the canton of Uri there is no general ban on wild camping, and on Korporation Uri ground camping is therefore in principle permitted and needs no registration. The conditions attached are short: observe the rules of nature and landscape protection zones, spare the pastures, make contact with the alp staff if your spot is near a farmed alp, tell the Korporation in advance if you stay more than three nights or come with more than ten people, pack your waste out in the charged bags, and accept that the Korporation is not liable for weather or livestock. The permission names its own exceptions, which is what makes it credible: wild camping is banned in the commune of Göschenen, and in the Seewlisee area it runs through a permit obtained in advance. Neither is anywhere near this mountain.3

And this mountain is that ground. The government decree that created the forest reserve lists the owners of the Rophaien: Korporation Uri, the Korporationsbürgergemeinden of Flüelen and Sisikon, which are its local units, and the Gruonwaldkorporation, an old corporation of its own for the Gruonwald flank around Schön Chulm and the Fläschsee.4 For that last slice no separately published camping position exists; the Korporation's own condition, a word with the Älpler when you camp near a working alp, is the right behaviour there anyway.3

Korporation Uri, Gotthardstrasse 3, 6460 Altdorf, 041 874 70 90. Nothing to book, nothing to pay: for one night the standing permission is the whole arrangement, free of charge. The alps whose staff you would greet if you pitch near their huts: Ricki on the east and south-east ridge pastures, Franzen on the west flank under the Wildheupfad, Schönkulm (Gruonwald) at Schön Chulm and the Fläschsee, Ebnet/Alplen on the Sisikon side toward the Alplersee. Their tenants' names are not published anywhere, and no fee arrangement exists for this mountain, by word of mouth or otherwise: what exists is the free standing permission above, and that is the whole ground truth here.53

Two protection labels sit on the summit, and neither is about your night

Now the two labels, because you will meet both on the map and neither means what it seems to. The first: the summit stands inside forest reserve 160_UR_02 "Rophaien", 618.7 ha reaching from the lake shore at 434 m to the cross at 2'078 m. That sounds like a ban zone until you read the instrument that created it. Government decision RRB Nr. 2010-332 of 8 June 2010 approved contracts with the owners: voluntary servitudes, minimum 50 years, entered in the land register as a burden on the parcels, 102 ha of natural forest reserve where forestry stops entirely and 190 ha of special reserve with targeted biodiversity interventions, compensated by canton and Bund. Every obligation in it binds the owners' forestry. There is no visitor rule, no camping, no fire and no access provision anywhere in the decree, and none in the forest-ordinance article it rests on. A reserve of this class binds the owners' chainsaws, not your tent. The reason it climbs so high is the thing it protects: cliffs, three small lakes and the wild-hay pine forests, a use of pine woods unique in Switzerland, which is exactly what the Wildheupfad below shows off.4

The second label is a boundary you stand on. Uri's hunting reglement designates the cantonal sanctuary "Alplen-Riemenstalden", 476 ha, and describes its border like this: "... auf den Diepen, weiter zum Rophaien, von dort über den Grat auf das Blutstöckli ...". The summit ridge is the line. North-east of the crest, Alplen, Spilau and the Alplersee lie inside a zone where hunting is banned. The reglement was scanned in full: it contains zero camping terms. And precision matters here, because the label invites a mix-up: this is a cantonal sanctuary, not a federal Jagdbanngebiet. The federal tent ban of VEJ art. 5 para. 1 lit. e and its CHF 150 fixed penalty, OBV annex 2 no. 12005, exist only inside federal game reserves, and the nearest of those, the Urirotstock, starts 6.7 km away on the other side of the lake. What the sanctuary means for you is not law but manners: the Sisikon flank is ground the canton keeps quiet for wildlife, so be the guest who keeps it that way.5

Keep the scale. To reach a rule that actually bites a camper from this summit, you walk 5 km down to the delta shore, where RB 10.5110 is waiting, or you cross the lake into the federal reserve, or you come back in winter, when the wildlife rest zone on the Eggberge flank switches on. At the pin, in summer: nothing. That is the whole finding, and it took every register named above to make the sentence this short.2

The summit fits a mat, the tent goes on the saddles

Now the honest part, because a verdict is worthless on ground you cannot lie on. The Rophaien is a steep grass pyramid, and the height model says so with numbers: radial profiles from the summit cross show 24 to 72 degrees for the first 100 m in every direction, 24 to 34 on the north ridge, up to 72 on the faces above the lake. The crown itself has room for a mat or two beside the cross, exposed on all sides: a bivouac in the narrow sense happens up here, a comfortable tent does not. The notch in the east ridge, 130 m from the cross, has about 20 m of near-flat floor at 1'940 m, but the way in averages over 40 degrees on alpine white-blue-white scramble ground. An emergency ledge, not a camp.1

The tent goes on the saddles. One to one and a half kilometres east to south-east, on the marked Ruogig route toward Firtiggrätli and Gand, the ridge opens into cols at 1'950 to 2'020 m: above the pines, at least 650 m from every groundwater protection zone, on Korporation ground, on your route anyway. This is the cleanest camp on the mountain and the one this article recommends.17

Second choice, with one honest layer: the Fläschsee bowl. Three kilometres south-east of the summit, grass shelves at 1'800 to 1'856 m surround the little pond, with pockets of 3 to 9 percent slope, a seasonal kiosk and official barbecue sites. No ban of any level reaches them. But the bowl sits inside groundwater protection zone S3 of the Gruontal spring catchments, with stricter S2a pockets 19 to 114 m from the flat spots. The zone reglement's tent words are facility words, "Zeltplätze, Standplätze für Wohnwagen und Mobilheime", camp grounds and stands, not one person's night, and the commune's own barbecue sites sit in the same catchment. So a clean single night is lawful here too, and clean is the operative word: no soap in the water, toilet business far away, stay off the fenced spring boxes and any marked S1 or S2 ground, fire only at the official sites or not at all. If that list is longer than you like, take the saddles, which are the better camp anyway. One measuring note: the pond's exact outline could not be obtained from a verifiable source, so treat shore distances as approximate to about 50 metres; the flat spots named here keep at least 60 m from the presumed shore.71

The hollow toward the Alplersee is colour, not a tip. A mountain-forum report describes a bivouac hollow with a fire pit on the descent toward Stock and the Alplersee, so quiet nights on this mountain are plainly an established practice. That hollow, though, lies below the treeline and on the sanctuary side of the crest. Nothing forbids it; this article still keeps its recommendation on the ridge.8

Getting up, and the winter caveat. Two cable cars serve the mountain: Eggberge from Flüelen (041 870 15 49), then the Wildheupfad across Oberaxen and Franzen; or Ruogig from Bürglen (041 870 20 00) via Gand, Schön Chulm and Firtiggrätli, with an alpine white-blue-white finish on the summit ridge. In winter two things change. The Wildruhezone Hüttenboden, legally binding, sits on the Eggberge flank 1.6 km south-south-east of the summit: from 1 December to 30 April entering it on foot is banned, and leaving the marked route inside it is tariffed at CHF 150 under the federal fixed-penalty ordinance, OBV annex 2 no. 12003. And the Wildheupfad's bridges are dismantled from November to about mid May, which is what the "[CLOSED]" flags in route apps mean. Both are about the approach and the season, and neither touches the summer verdict.81 One last disambiguation for people typing the name into a map: "Rophaien" is also the address of a farm hamlet in Bürglen on the south-east ridge line. The mountain in this article is the summit above the Urnersee.6

  • The ridge saddles toward Firtiggrätli and Gand, 1'950 to 2'020 m on the Ruogig route: outside every protection perimeter and every groundwater zone, above the treeline, the cleanest pitch on this mountain17.
  • The summit crown itself, 2'078 m, a mat or two beside the cross for a bivvy-bag night: lawful, exposed, and huge at first light, with 24 to 72 degree drops all around1.
  • The Fläschsee bowl, 1'800 to 1'856 m: lawful, inside groundwater zone S3, so camp spotless, keep off fenced springs and marked S1 or S2 ground, or take the saddles7.
  • Near a farmed hut only with a hello. Contact with the alp staff near the Ricki, Franzen, Schönkulm or Alplen huts is the landowner's own condition. Korporation Uri, 041 874 70 903.
  • Not on the Eggberge flank in winter. The Wildruhezone Hüttenboden bans entry from 1 December to 30 April, CHF 150 off the marked route, and the Wildheupfad bridges are out until roughly mid May8.

General rules for wild camping

This matters more where the answer is yes than where it is no. Nobody in Uri has ever needed a camping rule for this mountain, and the Korporation publishes conditions instead of prohibitions. The list below is not law. It is the reason the answer above stays yes.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Disclaimer

This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of August 2026. It is based on the publicly accessible and official sources linked below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement of the current legal situation.

The verdict covers the summit and the benches named in the article, and it rests on the absence of any prohibition at the federal, cantonal and communal level plus a published standing permission of the landowner. An absence can end, and a permission can be withdrawn. The forest reserve and the cantonal hunting sanctuary at the summit contain no camping provisions today; their texts can change. The winter wildlife rest zone on the Eggberge flank and the federal game reserve across the lake are real prohibitions with real tariffs, and their boundaries are not marked on the ground. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed on the Rophaien?
Yes, for a single night, and there is nothing to apply for. The summit at 2'078 m is in Flüelen, canton Uri, with the Sisikon boundary 1 m away on the crest. Federal geodata returns no camping-relevant protected area at the point, canton Uri's whole protection register was walked act by act and its tent bans all name other perimeters, and the complete collections of Flüelen, Sisikon and Bürglen contain no camping rule. On top of that Korporation Uri, the landowner, publishes a standing permission for wild camping that requires no registration for up to three nights and up to ten people.
Doesn't the forest reserve on the summit forbid camping?
No. It regulates forestry, not visitors. Forest reserve 160_UR_02 "Rophaien" was created by government decision RRB Nr. 2010-332 of 8 June 2010 as voluntary servitude contracts with the owning corporations: at least 50 years, 102 ha without any forestry, 190 ha with targeted biodiversity interventions, compensated by canton and Bund. The decree contains no visitor, camping, fire or access provision, and a servitude on the owners cannot bind a hiker. The same goes for the cantonal hunting sanctuary north-east of the crest: it bans hunting and contains zero camping terms.
Is there a CHF 150 fine like in the game reserves?
Not up here in summer. The CHF 150 camping tariff of OBV annex 2 no. 12005 applies only inside federal game reserves, where VEJ art. 5 para. 1 lit. e bans free tenting; the nearest, Urirotstock no. 6, starts 6.7 km away across the lake. The cantonal sanctuary Alplen-Riemenstalden on the Rophaien's north-east flank is not a federal reserve and carries no camping norm. A real CHF 150 does exist nearby in winter: OBV annex 2 no. 12003, for entering the wildlife rest zone Hüttenboden off the marked route, 1 December to 30 April, on the Eggberge flank 1.6 km from the summit.
Where do I actually pitch, if the summit is that steep?
On the ridge saddles toward Firtiggrätli and Gand, at 1'950 to 2'020 m. The summit crown fits a mat or two beside the cross and drops at 24 to 72 degrees in every direction, so it is a bivvy-bag spot, not a tent spot. The cols on the marked Ruogig route are above the treeline, at least 650 m from every groundwater protection zone, and flat enough for a small tent. Second choice is the Fläschsee bowl at 1'800 to 1'856 m: lawful, but inside groundwater zone S3, so camp spotless there, keep off the fenced spring boxes and marked S1 or S2 ground, and use the official barbecue sites or no fire at all.
Do I have to ask or pay anyone?
No. The permission is standing and free. Korporation Uri's published permission needs no registration for up to three nights and ten people; beyond that, tell them in advance (041 874 70 90). Their one live condition here: make contact with the alp staff if you pitch near a farmed hut, on this mountain Ricki, Franzen, Schönkulm (Gruonwald) or Ebnet/Alplen. No fee arrangement exists, published or by word of mouth. Flüelen's and Sisikon's visitor taxes would in principle put one franc or one franc fifty on any overnight guest, and no case of a bivouac being charged has ever surfaced.

Conditions listed: observe the rules in nature and landscape protection zones and spare the pasture; obtain the right permit for private roads; make contact with the alp staff if the chosen spot is near a farming operation; inform the Korporation in advance for stays over three nights or groups of more than ten; pack rubbish into charged bags and carry it to the next collection point; leave the site tidy; no liability for natural forces or grazing livestock. Two named exclusions: the commune of Göschenen, where the official campsite must be used, and the Seewlisee area, permit in advance only. The Korporation also publishes its "Pläne Schutzzonen" atlas for campers: eight map sheets, each titled "Zeltverbot", covering exactly the register zones 10.5110 Reussdelta, 10.5111 Chärstelenbach/Golzernsee, 10.5112 Urnerboden, 10.5113 Brunnen/Fliessmatt, 10.5114 Gitschenen, 10.5115 Wilerschachen, 10.5117 Bäz and 10.5127 Rüti; no sheet covers the Rophaien. Legal basis: federal Forest Act SR 921.0 art. 20 para. 4 with the cantonal forest ordinance RB 40.2111 art. 26. Mechanism: voluntary servitude contracts with the owners, minimum 50 years, entered in the land register as "Last: Waldreservat mit Bewirtschaftungsauflagen zu Gunsten des Kantons Uri"; 102.20 ha of natural forest reserve without forestry and 190.05 ha of special forest reserve with targeted interventions, compensated by canton and Bund. Owners named: Korporation Uri, Korporationsbürgergemeinde Flüelen, Korporationsbürgergemeinde Sisikon and the Gruonwaldkorporation, together 291.98 of 292.25 ha of reserve forest, plus one private owner with 0.27 ha. The decree contains no visitor, camping, fire or access provision, and art. 26 of the enabling ordinance contains none either; the servitude texts themselves are not published, and a servitude on the owners cannot bind third parties. 5. Reglement über die Ausübung der Jagd, RB 40.3121, Anhang 2 art. A2-1: the cantonal Banngebiet "Alplen-Riemenstalden", 475.67 ha, its boundary running "... auf den Diepen, weiter zum Rophaien, von dort über den Grat auf das Blutstöckli ...", so the summit ridge is the line and the north-east flank with Alplen, Spilau and the Alplersee lies inside. The reglement was scanned in full: zero camping terms, it binds hunting. It is not a federal Jagdbanngebiet: VEJ SR 922.31 art. 5 para. 1 lit. e and the CHF 150 tariff of OBV SR 314.11 annex 2 no. 12005 apply only in federal game reserves, the nearest being Urirotstock no. 6 across the lake (source 1). The cantonal WMS geo.ur.ch confirms the geometry: sanctuary hit at the Alplersee, edge hit exactly on the crest at the pin, empty 150 m south-west of it, with a bogus-layer control returning a service exception. The same service's Alpkataster, 2026 records with a positive control at the Musenalp, names the farmed alps on the flanks, Ricki, Franzen, Schönkulm (Gruonwald) and Ebnet/Alplen, and its planning layers show no communal nature or landscape protection overlay at the summit or at any candidate bench. rechtsbuch.ur.ch.
  6. Communal law collections, complete, downloaded and scanned 31 August 2026 with per-file character counts and control words, scanned PDFs put through text recognition. Flüelen: 33 published acts, no Polizeireglement, no camping act; the Bau- und Zonenordnung of 29 June 2017 carries one camping term, the enabling "Sport-, Spiel- und Campinganlagen" clause for the village sport zone; the Ortstaxen ordinance of 2010 takes Fr. 1.00 per night from overnighting guests in the camping category. Sisikon: 14 acts, the scanned Bau- und Zonenordnung (approved 28 May 2019) read in full over 57 pages, one camping term, the same enabling clause; Kurtaxenverordnung of 12 December 2022, CHF 1.50 per person and night. Bürglen: 37 acts listed, a Bau- und Zonenordnung with zero camping terms, and the Kurtaxenverordnung of 22 April 2021, which taxes only those who overnight for payment. The farm hamlet "Rophaien" (addresses Rophaien 1 to 1.2) on Bürglen's south-east ridge line is a namesake locality, not this summit. flueelen.ch, sisikon.ch, buerglen.ch.

Schutzzonenreglement für die Quellwasserfassungen Gruontalgebiet of 29 January 2008, read in full, with the ÖREB cadastre extract for the summit parcel (EGRID CH144607793406, parcel 2039 Flüelen, geometry retrieved and evaluated point by point). The summit and the Firtiggrätli saddles lie outside every groundwater protection zone, the nearest S3 boundary 650 m or more away. The Fläschsee bowl lies inside zone S3 of the Gruontal spring catchments, with S2a pockets 19 to 114 m from the flat spots. The reglement's tent words are facility words: banned in the stricter zones are "Zeltplätze, Standplätze für Wohnwagen und Mobilheime", camp grounds and stands, not one person's single night, and the official barbecue sites at the Fläschsee operate in the same catchment. The extract clips at the parcel boundary, so the Bürglen-side distances at the kiosk are indicative; the zone plan governs there. webgis.lisag.ch.
