Wild camping at the Rawilseeleni
The Rawilseeleni are three tarns at about 2'490 m on the Rawil path above Lenk, below the Wildstrubelhütte. All three lie in the Gelten-Iffigen nature reserve, whose decree bans camping and pitching tents or other shelters. Over the ridge in Valais, Ayent bans camping too.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping at the Rawilseeleni: three tarns at 2'490 m on the Rawil path
Wild camping at the Rawilseeleni means a night by the three small tarns on the Rawil route above Lenk, in the Bernese Oberland. Seeleni is Bernese for little lakes, and the national map names the three together and puts their labels on the water: the smallest, to the south-west, at WGS84 46.38295 / 7.45698 and 2'490 m; the main tarn at 46.38393 / 7.45931 (LV95 2'601'589 / 1'136'950) and 2'486 m; the third, to the north-east, at 46.38509 / 7.46026 and 2'486 m. All three lie in the commune of Lenk, a short way from the border with Valais.4
They sit on the old path over the Rawilpass, the route from the Iffigenalp to the Wildstrubelhütte, and most people pass them on the way to the hut. The tarns lie about 900 m above the Iffigenalp; the hut stands about 700 m to the east and some 300 m higher. The cableway overhead is a military goods line. It also supplies the hut, and it carries no passengers except the hut staff.478
Would anyone sleep here if it were allowed? Yes, and that is the point. Between the tarns the ground is grey moraine gravel and limestone with patches of turf, and it is flat: shelves of 0.3 to 1.4 degrees at about 2'490 m, 40 to 90 m from the water. The nearest forest grows 1.6 km to the north-west, at about 1'870 m, so the tarns lie some 500 m above the tree line. If any ground on the Rawil path invites a tent, it is this one, and that is why the rule covering it matters.4
The Gelten-Iffigen reserve bans tents and other shelters
The tarns lie inside the cantonal nature reserve Gelten-Iffigen, no. 35 in Bern's register. The Bernese government placed it under state protection by decree no. 3658 of 30 May 1969, "zur Erhaltung einer Gebirgs- und Alplandschaft in ursprünglicher Gestalt", to keep a mountain and alpine landscape in its original form, and amended it by decree no. 3410 of 6 December 1995. The reserve covers about 47 km², from the Lauenensee to the Rawil, and the whole path from the Iffigenalp up to the border ridge runs through it.13
Paragraph 3 of the decree applies the prohibitions of paragraph 4 to the whole reserve, not only to its two inner zones around the Hohberg and the Iffigenhorn and around the Lauenensee. Paragraph 4 then lists what is prohibited, and its letter d is the rule for this article:1
"Untersagt sind: ... d) das Campieren, das Aufschlagen von Zelten oder andern Unterständen."Decree no. 3658 of the Bernese government, 30 May 1969, Naturschutzgebiet Gelten-Iffigen, paragraph 4 letter d. In English: prohibited are camping, and the pitching of tents or other shelters.
What the wording catches. It names three things. Camping is banned as an act of its own. The tent is named. And "andern Unterständen", other shelters, takes in a tarp or anything else you put up for the night. That leaves the bivvy bag with nothing pitched over it. The decree does not define "Campieren", and no court has decided whether such a night is camping; in plain language, a night out with sleeping gear is at least arguably exactly that. A bivvy bag is no way round the ban here, and the reserve has no designated place where it would be allowed.1
The tarns are in the general reserve, not an inner zone. The canton's reserve map puts all three and the ground around them in the general area, where paragraph 4 applies; the inner zone Hohberg-Iffigenhorn begins about 2.4 km to the north-west. Paragraph 4 is enough.13
It is law in force. The canton's cadastre of public-law restrictions lists "Gelten-Iffigen (NSG-Nr. 35)" as in force on Lenk parcel 869, the Iffigenalp pasture that reaches the north-western shores of the tarns, with the 1969 decree and the cantonal nature protection act as its legal basis. The tarns themselves and most of the ground around them lie outside any parcel, so no extract exists for them, but the canton's map service for the same cadastre answers "Gelten-Iffigen" at each of the three.3
What a breach costs. The 1969 decree still ends with "Widerhandlungen gegen diesen Beschluss werden mit Busse oder Haft bestraft", but detention no longer exists as a penalty for such offences, and the fine comes from Bern's nature protection act today. Its art. 57 para. 1 lit. b punishes whoever breaches a prohibition ordered for a reserve with a fine of CHF 100 to 50'000, and para. 2 allows up to CHF 100'000 in severe cases. Bern has no fixed fine for this, so there is no price list; the amount is set case by case. Para. 3 lets the authority refrain from punishment in particularly minor cases. That is a discretion the authority holds after the fact, not a permission you hold before it.2
Two exceptions, and neither is a route for a hiker
The decree has two ways out of paragraph 4, and it matters who each one is written for.1
Designated places. Paragraph 5 letter c reserves "das Campieren sowie das Parkieren an besonders bezeichneten Plätzen, die vom Grundeigentümer mit Bewilligung der Gemeindebehörde und der Forstdirektion festgelegt sind": camping and parking at specially designated places, fixed by the landowner with the approval of the commune and the canton's forestry directorate. That is a way to create a place, not a permit for a person, and no such place exists at the Rawil. The land-use plan zones the ground around the tarns as "Uebrige", other land, and Lenk's camping zones lie down in the valley.135
Exceptions in justified cases. Paragraph 8, in the wording of 1995, reads: "Das Naturschutzinspektorat ist befugt, in begründeten Fällen Ausnahmen von den Schutzbestimmungen zu bewilligen." The nature protection inspectorate may grant exceptions from the protection rules in justified cases; its tasks now lie with the Abteilung Naturförderung of the canton's Amt für Landwirtschaft und Natur. The clause gives the authority a power. It does not describe an application a hiker makes for a night by the tarns, so do not count on it.12
What the decree keeps open. Paragraph 5 also reserves the buildings of the inn on the Iffigenalp (letter b), and the military installations and the SAC accommodation under the contracts with the landowners (letter d). That is why the Berghaus Iffigenalp and the Wildstrubelhütte take guests inside the reserve, and why the military cableway runs through it. A bed is the night up here that the decree itself provides for.17
Neither the landowner nor the commune can lift the ban. It is cantonal. A farmer's yes, or the commune's, does not override a decree of the cantonal government, and the only consent the decree mentions is the one needed to create a designated place. Lenk's own camping rules sit underneath and change nothing at the tarns: its police regulation bans camping on public ground outside the areas provided for it (art. 21), and its camping regulation of 1969 allows occasional camping elsewhere only with the consent of both the landowner and the commune (art. 6). Where the reserve does not reach, those two rules decide, as at the Ammertepass. At the tarns the reserve decides first.5
Over the ridge into Valais: Ayent bans camping as well
Where the reserve ends. A Bernese decree stops at the cantonal border, and here the border runs along the rocky ridge south-west of the tarns: about 60 m from the shore of the smallest tarn, about 190 m from the main one and about 390 m from the north-eastern one. The Bern geoportal draws the reserve line up to about 200 m further, into Valais; on the ground, the cantonal border is the edge. On the other side lies the commune of Ayent, and further south-east, towards the Plaine Morte, the commune of Icogne.34
Ayent's police regulation applies on its whole territory (art. 4 para. 1), and it answers the question in one sentence:6
"Le camping, le caravaning et ce qui leur est assimilable sont interdits en dehors des emplacements autorisés expressément désignés comme tels par l'Autorité."Règlement de police de la commune d'Ayent, art. 54 para. 2, homologated by the Valais government on 16 July 2025 and in force since. In English: camping, caravanning and whatever is assimilated to them are prohibited outside the authorised places expressly designated as such by the authority.
"Ce qui leur est assimilable", whatever is assimilated to camping, reaches beyond the tent, and a night in a bivvy bag is hard to keep out of it. The border ridge is not a designated place. A breach is fined with CHF 10 to 10'000 (art. 77 para. 1). Icogne, which begins about 700 m south-east of the tarns on rock, scree and the Plaine Morte glacier, has the same sentence in the police regulation it shares with the Crans-Montana communes (art. 52 para. 2), with fines of up to CHF 5'000 (art. 67 para. 1). Stepping over the ridge swaps one ban for another.6
One page says otherwise, and it is not the rule. Anzère Tourisme, the tourist office of the resort in the commune of Ayent, writes on its camping page that bivouacking is allowed under conditions: outside alpine pastures, above the tree line, away from inhabited areas, between sunset and sunrise. That is tourism guidance. It does not match art. 54 para. 2 of the commune's own regulation and it designates no place, so do not build a night on it.6
On the way up: the path, the season, the hunt
The path. The Rawil path starts at the Iffigenalp, 1'584 m, at the end of the road from Lenk, which a bus serves in summer. Above the Berghaus it climbs a section where the rock was blasted for the path, with fixed ropes where needed, then eases past the small Blattihütte to the tarns. The hut rates the whole route from the Iffigenalp T2, 3.5 hours; Lenk-Simmental Tourismus gives 3 hours 5 minutes for 5.8 km and 1'197 m of ascent. Count on roughly two and a half hours to the tarns, an estimate from those totals rather than a published time, and 45 minutes to an hour more up the steep, stony last section to the hut.78
The season. The commune of Lenk closes the Rawilpassweg for the winter; this year the closure was lifted on 25 June 2026. The last bus of the season to the Iffigenalp runs on Sunday 11 October 2026. Check the commune's notices before a late-season trip.58
The hunt. The Bern chamois hunt runs from 10 to 30 September 2026, and on the Valais side of the ridge the high hunt runs until 3 October, Monday to Saturday. Hunting is lawful inside the reserve, so stay on the path and wear something visible.101
What else is on this ground, and what is not. The only federal layer at the tarns is the BLN landscape inventory, object 1501 Gälte-Iffigen, which binds the authorities in their decisions and carries no fine for a hiker. There is no federal game reserve, no binding wildlife rest zone and no military area at the tarns, and the nearest Bernese wildlife protection area is 5.3 km away. The rule that binds you here is the reserve's, and it covers dogs too: paragraph 4 letter b bans letting them run unsupervised anywhere in the reserve. How it is possible: a bed in the Wildstrubelhütte or at the Iffigenalp
There is no lawful pitch between the Iffigenalp and the border ridge, and none just over it. The lawful night up here is a bed, and the decree provides for exactly that: the SAC hut above the tarns and the inn at the start of the path are both reserved by its paragraph 5.1
Wildstrubelhütte SAC, 2'789 m, about 700 m east of the tarns. Run by the SAC sections Wildhorn and Kaiseregg, 68 places. Staffed in summer 2026 until the weekend of 26/27 September; its opening-times page gives 25/26 September, so check before you go. Half board in 2026 costs CHF 76 for SAC members and CHF 88 for others, and a hut sleeping bag is compulsory. Outside the staffed season only the winter room is open: 8 places with duvets, to be booked online in advance, with firewood and electricity but no running water; bring a down sleeping bag, food and matches. Berghaus Iffigenalp, 1'584 m, at the start of the path. Rooms, and a dormitory for up to 49 people in the old Sennhütte "direkt am Zugang zum Rawilpass", right at the start of the Rawil path; 77 beds in all. It runs in summer only, from about late May to mid-October according to Lenk-Simmental Tourismus, and the last bus of the season goes on 11 October 2026. +41 33 733 13 33, info@iffigenalp.ch.8
For a tent: the campsite in Lenk. Camping Hasenweide, near the Simmenfälle south of the village, is open until 1 November 2026. Its 2026 price list adds up to CHF 17.40 a night for one adult with a small tent: CHF 5 for the tent, CHF 6.40 for the person, CHF 5 of guest tax and CHF 1 of lodging levy. - Not at the tarns, not anywhere on the path from the Iffigenalp, and not over the ridge. The Bernese side is nature reserve up to the border, and Ayent and Icogne ban camping outside designated places on the Valais side.16
General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which near the Rawilseeleni means a pitch at a campsite in Lenk. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense on a path through a nature reserve whose decree already bans litter of any kind and dogs running loose.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The verdict rests on paragraph 4 letter d of the 1969 decree for the Gelten-Iffigen nature reserve, which paragraph 3 applies to the whole reserve, and on the police regulations of Ayent and Icogne for the ground beyond the cantonal border. The decree is published as a scan of a typescript; the passages quoted here were read against the page images and are given in the original German. Whether a night in a bivvy bag with nothing pitched counts as "Campieren" has not been decided by any court, and no published case shows how the range of CHF 100 to 50'000 is applied to a camper. The reserve boundary is taken from the canton's published geometry rather than from the 1969 map sheet the decree refers to, and every distance here is as accurate as that data, not a marker on the ground. The walking time to the tarns is an estimate from published totals. Prices, dates and timetables are taken from their publishers as of September 2026 and can change, and the hut's own pages put its last staffed night a day apart. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves.
