Wild camping on Pilatus
The top of Pilatus above Lucerne is two hotels and two railway stations on a rock summit, and all the level ground is terrace. On the Nidwalden side, Klimsenkapelle included, the landowner has banned tents since 2021. For the sunrise, you sleep in a hotel on the summit.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping on Pilatus: a summit of hotels and railway stations
Wild camping on Pilatus means the top of the massif above Lucerne, where the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad and the cableway from Kriens arrive. The federal gazetteer calls its main summit "Hauptgipfel Esel (OW) - Alpnach": the Esel, 2'118 m, LV95 2'662'203 / 1'203'446, a railed viewpoint on a rock head just above Pilatus Kulm. Next to it rise the Oberhaupt, 2'106 m, five minutes from the hotel terrace, and the Tomlishorn, at 2'128 m the highest point of the massif, reached by a secured path.18
Two cantons meet up here. The Esel, both hotels and the terminus of the cogwheel railway are in Alpnach, Obwalden. Hergiswil, Nidwalden, begins 39 m north of the Esel and takes in the northern edge of the terraces, the Oberhaupt viewpoint, the Tomlishorn, the north face and, 560 m north-west, the Klimsen saddle with its chapel. Lucerne begins 1.1 km north, in Kriens, in steep forest below the tree line, and the three cantons meet 2.2 km west-south-west, near the Gemsmättli. The Widderfeld at the western end of the ridge has its own report, and so does the Rigi, the other hotel summit above the lake.1
Ask the first question before any law: if a night up here were lawful, would anyone lie down on this ground? The Esel is 55 m from the Hotel Bellevue, which houses the top station of the cableway. The cogwheel railway ends within 60 m, and the Hotel Pilatus-Kulm stands within 200 m, with restaurants, a panorama gallery and the Drachenweg, a path cut through the rock. Half the ground within 100 m of the Esel is steeper than 49 degrees, and every level patch is built: the hotel and station terraces at about 2'060 m. The Esel itself is level only because it is a viewing platform with a railing. The Oberhaupt is the same, and the Tomlishorn is a rock head without a level patch the size of a tent.18
And the summit never empties. The Pilatus-Bahnen carried 604'562 people up the mountain in 2025. The last cars and trains go down in the early evening, and hotel guests and staff stay on the summit through the night.89
The law on the Obwalden side: one night, if it impairs no one
The Esel, both hotels and the stations are on Obwalden ground, and Obwalden's camping act names the single night. Its Article 6 bans putting up tents, caravans and motorhomes for camping outside authorised campsites. Article 8 then makes room for exactly the night this article is about:2
"Zum einmaligen Übernachten darf ein Zelt, ein Wohnwagen oder ein Wohnmobil ohne Bewilligung ausserhalb bewilligter Campingplätze aufgestellt werden, wenn keine öffentlichen oder privaten Interessen beeinträchtigt werden."Gesetz über das Campieren of the canton of Obwalden (GDB 971.4), Art. 8 Abs. 1. In English: for a single overnight stay, a tent, a caravan or a motorhome may be set up without a permit outside authorised campsites, provided no public or private interests are impaired.
So one night in a tent needs no permit. The ban in Article 6 is written against putting up tents, caravans and motorhomes, so a night in a bivvy bag without a tent is not caught by its wording at all. The condition sits in the last clause: no public or private interest may be impaired, and paragraph 2 adds that the night is at your own risk. A breach is fined under Article 11, which names no amount, and Obwalden's list of fixed fines has no camping item.2
Nothing else in the law closes the summit. The canton's forestry and landscape office wrote in 2025 that one night outside campsites is allowed in principle and that an absolute ban on camping and bivouacking applies in protected areas: the Glaubenberg moor landscape, the game reserves, nature reserves such as the Wichelsee, floodplains. None of them reaches the summit. Alpnach's building and zoning regulation mentions camping only for campsites, the commune has no police regulation, and the summit is zoned "Übriges Gebiet", other land. The massif is object 1605 "Pilatus" in the federal landscape inventory BLN, which binds federal authorities, not hikers, and the cantonal landscape protection area regulates buildings and terrain, not nights out. The court bans for Alpnach in the cantonal gazette since February 2026 are two parking bans.123
What closes the top is the condition of Article 8, read against the ground described above. On a summit of two hotels and two stations, with guests and staff there all night and the operator's facilities on every side, there is no place where a tent would impair nobody's interest. That is a reading of a proviso, not a named ban, and it is enough: nobody pitches a tent on a hotel terrace.28
In March 2026 Obwalden's parliament accepted two postulates on the camping act aimed at motorhomes and camper vans, not at tents; as of September 2026 no bill has been published. How these layers fit together across the country is set out in the national overview.2
The Nidwalden side: closed by the landowner since 2021
A few metres north of the Esel the ground is Nidwalden, and there the question is not a statute but an owner. Nidwalden has no act that bans a night out, and Hergiswil's regulations have no camping rule. The canton's information sheet on camping answers for the whole canton: "Ist das Wildcampieren in Nidwalden erlaubt? Grundsätzlich Nein. Für ein Ja ist die Zustimmung des Grundeigentümers nötig." In principle no; a yes needs the landowner's consent. The sheet names exceptions, single nights in the mountains above the tree line among them, but it is guidance, not a statute, and on Pilatus the landowner has answered in public.45
The owner is the Korporation Hergiswil. Its main parcel, Hergiswil no. 333, carries the Tomlishorn, the Oberhaupt viewpoint, the north flank, the Klimsenhorn and the Klimsen saddle. The corporation calls it "das hauptsächliche und grösste Gebiet", its main and largest area, "Rund 2/3 des Gemeindegebietes von Hergiswil", about two thirds of the commune.6
What it decided. In 2021, by its own announcement as the press reported it, the corporation banned tents and camping on all its land: the whole north flank from the Schwandigaden up to the Kulm summit, Klimsen, the Fräkmünd and the Alpgschwänd included. The reason it gave was complaints about tent camps on the Klimsenhorn saddle by the chapel, and toilet paper behind the rocks; a member of its council calls the Klimsenhorn a habitat of ibex and chamois. The Nidwaldner Zeitung reported on it on 21 June 2025 under the headline "Trotz Zeltverbot wird am Pilatus weiterhin campiert, zu einer Busse kam es bisher aber noch nie": people still camp despite the ban, and it has not yet come to a fine.7
How binding it is. Another report puts the fine for a breach at CHF 2'000. That is the ceiling of a court ban under the Civil Procedure Code, which suggests one, but whether the corporation's ban is a court order is unclear. No fine has been reported. Either way it is the owner's refusal of the consent the canton's sheet asks for, stated in public, and it covers the whole Nidwalden side of the summit.74
A second rule on the same ground. From the Kulm station to the Tomlishorn and down to the Klimsen saddle, the Nidwalden side is plant protection area no. 8 "Pilatusgebiet" under a cantonal ordinance in force since 1 January 2026: "In den Pflanzenschutzgebieten ist jedes Pflücken, Ausgraben, Ausreissen, Beschädigen und Überdecken von einheimischen wildwachsenden Pflanzen und Pilzen verboten", picking, digging up, tearing out, damaging and covering native wild plants and fungi is forbidden, on pain of a fine under the cantonal nature protection act. Whether a tent floor "covers" plants in that sense is a plausible reading that no court has tested. The Esel lies 39 m outside the area.5
The Klimsenkapelle: the chapel where the ban began
The Klimsenkapelle stands on the Klimsen saddle at 1'864 m, LV95 2'661'787 / 1'203'818, below the Klimsenhorn and about 560 m north-west of the Esel, in Hergiswil, Nidwalden. It was consecrated in 1861 as the chapel of the Hotel Klimsenhorn, which the Pilatus-Bahnen bought in 1967 and pulled down. The chapel was restored and handed to a foundation, the Stiftung Kapelle Klimsenhorn; it is a protected monument of the canton, and a mountain service is held there every year on the Sunday after 15 August. There is no hut, no restaurant and no other building within 300 m.101
The saddle beside it is the one real level ground on the Hergiswil side near the top: grass at 1'867 m, 50 to 60 m south of the chapel. That is why people pitched there, and why the corporation's ban began there. It is also a crossroads, where the trails from Pilatus Kulm, the Fräkmüntegg and the Alpgschwänd meet, and a flying site: the Swiss paragliding association's site sheet lists two take-offs on the saddle, Klimsen West at 1'868 m and Klimsen Ost at 1'866 m.1710
So the answer for the Klimsenkapelle is no. The chapel is a building, the saddle is a trail junction and a take-off, and all of it lies on the Korporation Hergiswil's land, under its ban, inside plant protection area no. 8. Nothing there makes a night lawful, and a bivvy bag is no way round it: the owner has said no. The nearest beds are the two hotels on Pilatus Kulm, about 500 m away.658
The one level patch of lawful ground, and why we do not send you there
Obwalden's one-night rule does not end at the summit, so the fair question is whether there is lawful, level ground on the Obwalden side within reach of the top. There is one patch: a grass shelf beside the Chilchsteine, a group of large boulders about 580 m south-south-west of the Esel and 240 m lower, at about 1'877 m, some 60 m off the marked trail from Pilatus Kulm down to Ämsigen. It lies in Alpnach, in the alp zone, outside every protected area with a camping ban, and under Article 8 a night there would be lawful.123
We do not send anyone to sleep there. The whole bowl around it lies in Alpnach's red hazard zone, where the commune's zoning restricts buildings in which people or animals stay. The Chilchsteine themselves are fallen blocks, and grass slopes of 22 to 35 degrees rise above the shelf for about 250 m to the cliff band under the ridge; which hazard the red zone is drawn for, the public map does not say. Cattle graze the bowl in summer, with the Korporation Alpnach's alps on either side, and the guided sunrise hike comes up this trail in the dark. From the shelf it is still about an hour on foot to the Esel.319
A lawful night below a cliff band in a red hazard zone is not a sunrise plan we give, and in snow it is no plan at all. The way to be on the Esel at first light is a bed on the summit.
How it is possible: the sunrise from a bed on the summit
Almost everyone who asks about a night on Pilatus wants the sunrise from the Esel, and no lift gets you there in time. The first scheduled arrival at Pilatus Kulm is 08:37. The sun rises up there at about 05:30 in midsummer, about 07:15 in late September and about 07:50 in mid-October; after the clocks change on 25 October, about 07:00. The lawful way to be there is to sleep on the summit, in one of the two hotels of the Pilatus-Bahnen, and walk the ten minutes from the Hotel Bellevue to the Esel before breakfast.918
Hotels on Pilatus Kulm, reception +41 41 329 12 12, hotels@pilatus.ch. Hotel Bellevue, three stars: standard double room from CHF 320 a night. Hotel Pilatus-Kulm, four stars: superior double room from CHF 420, grand superior from CHF 470, junior suite from CHF 520. Every room category includes a welcome aperitif, a four-course dinner and the breakfast buffet from 08:00 to 10:00, VAT included. Check-in from 16:00 in summer and 15:00 in winter; the last ascent from Kriens is at 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter. From Sunday to Thursday in autumn a midweek offer takes 20 per cent off, and hotel guests without a package get 30 per cent off the lift tickets at the valley stations.8
The path to the Esel is open from June to October and closed in winter; the Oberhaupt is five minutes from the panorama terrace. Whether the hotels take guests while the cableway is under revision, from 19 October to 27 November 2026, the operator's pages do not say: ask reception.89
Without a room, two ways to the sunrise. The sunrise train, the Nostalgie-Sonnenaufgangsfahrt, leaves Alpnachstad at 06:05 in a historic cogwheel car, with breakfast in the Bellevue from 07:00 to 09:00: CHF 145 for adults, CHF 115 with an annual pass, CHF 90 for children, bookable at least a day ahead. It runs on a few Sundays, and the last two in 2026 are 27 September and 4 October. The guided sunrise hike starts at midnight in Alpnachstad and climbs 1'680 m in about five hours via Ämsigen, the Chilchsteine and Pilatus Kulm to the Esel, with a breakfast bag and the ride down: CHF 180, July to October, next dates 3 and 10 October 2026.9
Lower down: the Tree Tents and the Alpgschwänd
Two lawful nights lie well below the summit. Neither gets you to the sunrise on the Esel without a long climb in the dark, but both can be booked.
The Tree Tents hang between the trees at the Fräkmüntegg, 1'416 m, the middle station between Kriens and the summit, about 1.3 km north-north-west of the Esel and 700 m lower. The Pilatus-Bahnen run them from June to September on set dates: CHF 140 per adult, CHF 160 alone in a tent, with the gondola from Kriens, the rope park in the evening, a grill buffet and breakfast. Bring a sleeping bag and a mat; an evening goes ahead from ten participants. The 2026 season ends with September.9
The Bergwirtschaft zur Alpgschwänd in Hergiswil, at about 1'220 m, 1.2 km north-east of the Esel and some 900 m lower, has an eight-bed room, three five-bed rooms, three doubles and a single: CHF 59 per adult in the shared rooms, CHF 69 in a double or single, with an Älplerzmorgä breakfast. Nights on weekends and public holidays only; book at info@alpgschwaend.ch or on +41 41 320 14 14. The restaurant is open daily from May to October.9
The lifts in autumn 2026, and what the summit asks of you
The cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad runs from 11 May to 29 November 2026; the last train down leaves Pilatus Kulm at 18:04 until 24 October and at 16:54 from 25 October. The gondola from Kriens and the cableway from the Fräkmüntegg run all year except for revisions, the next from 19 October to 27 November 2026; until 18 October the last cableway down leaves at 17:30. So from 19 October to 27 November the summit is reachable only by the cogwheel railway, and from 30 November only by the cableway.9
Up here. No fire: there is no fireplace on Pilatus Kulm. Take everything down with you, and no toilet stops behind the rocks: the complaints that closed the Nidwalden side began with exactly that.87
Where you can legally sleep
- Hotel Bellevue, Pilatus Kulm. Double room from CHF 320 a night, dinner and breakfast included, +41 41 329 12 12; ten minutes from the Esel.8
- Hotel Pilatus-Kulm, Pilatus Kulm. Double room from CHF 420, the same inclusions, the same reception.8
- Tree Tents, Fräkmüntegg, 1'416 m. June to September, CHF 140 per adult with the gondola, a grill buffet and breakfast.9
- Bergwirtschaft zur Alpgschwänd, about 1'220 m. CHF 59 or 69 with breakfast, on weekends and public holidays, +41 41 320 14 14.9
- Not on the summit, its terraces, the Tomlishorn or the Klimsen saddle. The top has no ground for it, and the Nidwalden side is closed by its owner. Nor by the Chilchsteine: lawful ground under Obwalden's Art. 8, but in a red hazard zone.163
General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which near Pilatus means Obwalden ground and never the Korporation Hergiswil's land. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense on a mountain where tent camps and toilet paper behind the rocks closed a whole flank.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves.
