Wild camping on the Morgenberghorn

The Suldtal side of the Morgenberghorn is a wildlife reserve and a nature reserve, and their rules ban camping and bivouacking. Their line runs over the top, 20 cm from the summit point, with the flat ground on their side. The night is at Brunni or the Rengglipass.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. Wild camping on the Morgenberghorn: the line runs along the crest

Wild camping on the Morgenberghorn is decided by one line, and that line runs over the summit. The main summit stands at 2'248.5 metres, the 2'249 on the map, at LV95 2'627'183.7 / 1'163'499.9, WGS84 46.622200 N / 7.793554 E. It is the corner where three communes meet: Leissigen to the north, Saxeten to the east, and Aeschi bei Spiez on the Suldtal side, to the south and west.1

The Suldtal side is protected twice over. It is the cantonal wildlife reserve Latrejenalp, no. 28, here its zone 1b, and the cantonal nature reserve no. 58 Suldtal. Around the summit the edges of the two reserves lie on top of each other and follow the commune boundaries to within about half a metre: along the west ridge from Brunni up to the top, and from the top down the south ridge to the Rengglipass. Put plainly, the Suldtal side of the crest is reserve, the Leissigen and Saxeten sides are not, and the crest is the line.5

At the top the line passes 20 centimetres from the summit point that swisstopo publishes. The point itself is outside. The ground a person would lie on is not: the flat part of the top, under ten degrees, is a patch of about 28 square metres, about 20 of them inside both reserves, the rest on the line. Twenty centimetres is less than half the width of a sleeping mat, so whichever way a mat lies up there, most of it is in the reserve.56

And the lawful sides do not take a body. North, the Leissigen side falls away as a face; east, the Saxeten side is limestone slabs and gullies. Both run at 20 to 45 degrees straight off the top. The only gentler ground outside the reserves near the summit is a strip one to eight metres wide that hugs the line: on the crest of the south ridge a few dozen metres below the top, and on the shoulder of the west ridge where the marked path runs, with the north face under it. That is a line to walk along, not a place to lie. The top itself is marked, route descriptions report, by a flag standard with the Swiss and Bernese arms.69

One honest limit. The line comes from the canton's geodata and the terrain from swisstopo's height model, and both are accurate to decimetres at best, so no map settles which side of the line a single stone, or the flag standard, stands on. What the maps do settle is that the line cuts through the top and that its flat ground belongs to the reserve side.5

The ban names the bivouac, and it costs CHF 100 on the spot

The decisive text is the canton's wildlife protection ordinance, the Verordnung über den Wildtierschutz (WTSchV, BSG 922.63), in the version in force since 1 December 2024. Its annex 2 sets out the measures for each cantonal wildlife reserve, and for Latrejenalp, object 28, it puts them under the heading "Alle Zonen (1a, 1b)", so zone 1b at the summit is covered by name. Category F reads:2

"Freies/wildes Campieren und Biwakieren sind verboten."Kanton Bern, Verordnung über den Wildtierschutz (WTSchV), BSG 922.63, annex 2, object 28 Latrejenalp, all zones (1a, 1b), category F; version in force since 1 December 2024. The object sheet of January 2026 repeats it word for word.

Free or wild camping and bivouacking are prohibited. The second verb settles the question most Swiss bans leave open. This one does not stop at the tent, it names the bivouac, so a bivvy bag on a mat is caught as plainly as a tent. The sentence carries no date, while the measures around it do: from 1 March to 31 July the area may only be entered on existing paths and roads, from 1 December to 31 July dogs go on a lead, drones are banned, and hunting is open from 1 September to 28 February. The camping sentence binds every day of the year. Art. 4 para. 1 of the same ordinance adds that the reserves are delimited "anhand digitaler Geodaten und Beschreibungen im Anhang 2", by digital geodata and the annex: the line on the canton's map is the legal line, not a sketch of it.2

The price is on the cantonal fixed-penalty list. The Kantonale Ordnungsbussenverordnung (KOBV, BSG 324.111), annex 1, section F, no. 29, prices "Missachten von Verboten in Wildschutzgebieten" at CHF 100, citing art. 3 para. 1 lit. f WTSchV, the category F measures, together with art. 31 para. 1 lit. c of the cantonal hunting act. Bern's game wardens may impose and collect fixed fines themselves under art. 27 para. 4 of that act, so this is a ticket written where you stand. Refuse it, and the case goes to ordinary proceedings under art. 31 para. 1 lit. c JWG, whose ceiling is CHF 20'000. That is the ceiling of the statute, not what a night costs; the figure to plan with is CHF 100.3

The second ban is older. The same side of the crest has been a cantonal nature reserve since the Regierungsrat's decree no. 5583 of 9 August 1968, written to keep "eine Alplandschaft mit ihren Weiden und Bächen, insbesondere dem Pochtenfall" in its natural state. Its no. 3 lists what is forbidden inside, and letter e is "das Campieren, das Aufschlagen von Zelten oder andern Unterständen": camping, and pitching tents or other shelters. Read by its words, "other shelters" reaches a tarp. No. 4 lit. c keeps camping possible at places the landowners designate with the commune and the canton, and none is designated anywhere near the summit. No. 8 punishes breaches with a fine; today that fine comes from the nature protection act, NSchG (BSG 426.11) art. 57 para. 1 lit. b, at CHF 100 to 50'000, with no fixed ticket, so there is no single franc figure to print for the nature reserve.4

Two bans, one boundary, and no exception for a hiker in either. The wildlife ordinance provides permits for organised events, not for a night; the decree's exceptions are for farming, forestry, paths, designated places and individual cases the canton approves. A night on the top of the Morgenberghorn is a night in both reserves.24

Nothing else applies, at any level

Federal. The summit lies in no federal game reserve, no BLN landscape, no park, no mire or floodplain and no military area. On the federal map of wildlife rest zones the only area here is the cantonal Latrejenalp reserve, whose edge runs a metre south of the summit point. The nearest federal game reserve, Kiental, begins 3.4 kilometres south-south-west.1

Cantonal. Canton Bern has no camping norm of general application. Its camping bans are written into the decrees and annexes for individual areas, like the two above.7

Communal. Leissigen, the summit's own commune, has no police regulation, and none of its published regulations contains a camping or overnight rule. Its building regulation puts the summit in a Landschaftsschongebiet under art. 537, a clause about buildings, installations and terrain changes, and art. 532 defers to the cantonal protection decrees where they apply. Saxeten, on the east side and at the Rengglipass, publishes an organisation regulation and a building regulation, neither with a camping, police or overnight rule; its Landschaftsschongebiet II under art. 525 is about buildings as well. Aeschi bei Spiez has no communal camping ban, and its side of the crest is reserve anyway.7

So on the Leissigen and Saxeten sides nothing forbids a night, and that is exactly why the terrain decides: the lawful ground up there is a face and slabs. Walk down it to somewhere you can lie flat, and you are at Brunni or the Rengglipass.

Where to spend the night: the Brunnihütte and the Rengglipass

The bed. The Brunnihütte of the Skiclub Leissigen stands at Brunni, 1'644 metres, about a kilometre west-north-west of the summit on the marked route up from Leissigen, 149 metres outside the reserve line. It has a dormitory of 40 places. The club charges CHF 25 a night for adults, CHF 5 for members and half for children, or CHF 250 a day for the whole hut; meals are self-catered and the kitchen is included in the price. A warden looks after the hut at weekends through the summer, and bookings are taken at most six months ahead.8

The pasture around the hut is the working alp of Brunni, so a tent beside the hut is the alp's call; the dormitory needs only a reservation.8

The tent. The flat ground that is both lawful and usable lies on the Saxeten side of the Rengglipass, the saddle between the Morgenberghorn and the Rengghorn. Just north-east of the saddle, at 46.613670 N / 7.800303 E (LV95 2'627'705 / 1'162'554), 1'876 metres, the pasture lies at about two degrees, 32 metres north-east of the reserve line and 16 metres from the path, with a mapped stream about 35 metres away. It is outside every federal and cantonal protected area, in Saxeten, which has no camping rule. The rule of thumb on the ground: keep the pass crest on your south-west. Over it, on the Suldtal side, you are back in both reserves.67

The pitch is 1.1 kilometres south of the summit and about 370 metres lower, and the way between them is the south ridge: a white-blue-white alpine route, T4, with exposed passages secured by cables. Walk it in daylight and in the dry, not by headtorch after the sunset you came up for. From Saxeten, the path to the pass climbs through the same alp.9

That alp is private ground, Alp Innerer Innerberg, and the path over the pass crosses it. No rule requires the owner's consent for a night, but when someone is on the alp, ask; the upper pasture is grazed roughly from mid-July to mid-August. No fee for a tent is published here, and this article does not invent one.9

Paths, dogs, hunters and water

If your route crosses the Suldtal side, as the path from the Suldtal up to Brunni does and the south ridge does in places, the reserve's other rules apply to you: from 1 March to 31 July stay on the existing paths and roads, from 1 December to 31 July keep a dog on the lead, and leave the drone at home all year. The same cantonal list prices leaving the paths and an unleashed dog at CHF 100 each. From 1 September to 28 February the Latrejenalp is open for hunting, so an autumn day on the Suldtal side is shared with hunters.23

Water. There is none on top; carry all of it up. At the Rengglipass a mapped stream runs about 35 metres from the pitch, and the alp there reports good water from its own springs.69

People have slept up there. A public photo album titled "Biwak Morgenberghorn, August 2013" shows a night on the summit and the sunrise after it, and a forum post from 2012 recommends the top for the sunset, with the warning that water has to be carried up. Both are older than the version of the wildlife ordinance in force today, and neither is older than the 1968 decree that already banned tents and other shelters on the Suldtal side. How often a warden walks up there, this article cannot tell you and does not guess; what the law provides is the CHF 100 ticket, written on the spot.93

  • A tent on the Saxeten side of the Rengglipass. 46.613670 N / 7.800303 E, 1'876 m, flat pasture 32 m north-east of the reserve line, 1.1 km south of the summit over the T4 south ridge. Keep the pass crest on your south-west, and ask on the alp when someone is there.69
  • Gasthaus Suld, Aeschiried. In the Suldtal, open 1 May to 25 October 2026, a dormitory of about 12 places plus rooms, 033 654 18 66. It stands inside the nature reserve, where a bed in a building is lawful and a tent is not.10
  • Panorama-Camping Aeschi. Aeschi bei Spiez, 033 654 43 77, season to 30 September 2026. Neither Leissigen nor Saxeten has a campsite.10
  • Not on the summit, and nowhere on the Suldtal side of the crest, in any month.24

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you sleep outside, and around the Morgenberghorn it starts with the map: the Suldtal side of every ridge here is reserve, the line is the crest, and the pitch at the Rengglipass is lawful only on its north-east side.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The pitch at the Rengglipass is on private alp ground; no rule requires consent for a night, but the people working the alp have the last word on their pasture. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed on the Morgenberghorn?
No, not on the top. The Suldtal side of the crest is the cantonal wildlife reserve Latrejenalp (no. 28, zone 1b) and the cantonal nature reserve no. 58 Suldtal, and their boundary runs along the crest, 20 cm from the summit point. Annex 2 of the Bern wildlife protection ordinance (WTSchV, BSG 922.63) says for Latrejenalp, all zones: "Freies/wildes Campieren und Biwakieren sind verboten." The flat ground at the top lies mostly inside, and the Leissigen and Saxeten sides outside the reserves are 20 to 45 degrees steep. Sleep in the Brunnihütte at 1'644 m or on the Saxeten side of the Rengglipass.
The summit point is outside the reserve. Why is the verdict still Illegal?
Because the verdict is about a night at the top, and the ground a sleeper needs at the top is in the reserve. The summit point sits 0.20 m outside the line, less than half the width of a sleeping mat; of the roughly 28 m² of flat ground up there, about 20 m² are inside both reserves and the rest is on the line. Outside the line the Leissigen side is a face and the Saxeten side slabs, 20 to 45 degrees, with at best a strip one to eight metres wide along the boundary. A lawful night would mean lying on a crest, a metre or two from a line drawn in the canton's geodata. So the reserve's rules decide the top: camping and bivouacking banned, CHF 100.
Does the ban also catch a bivvy bag without a tent?
Yes. The Latrejenalp measure names both: "Freies/wildes Campieren und Biwakieren sind verboten" (WTSchV, annex 2, object 28, category F). The Suldtal decree of 1968, RRB no. 5583, no. 3 lit. e, bans "das Campieren, das Aufschlagen von Zelten oder andern Unterständen", camping and pitching tents or other shelters, which reaches a tarp. At the top the wildlife ordinance settles it on its own: sleeping out without a tent is bivouacking, and bivouacking is banned.
How much is the fine?
CHF 100 as a fixed fine. The cantonal fixed-penalty ordinance (KOBV, BSG 324.111), annex 1, section F, no. 29, prices breaches of the bans in wildlife reserves at CHF 100, and under art. 27 para. 4 of the cantonal hunting act (JWG, BSG 922.11) Bern's game wardens may impose and collect it on the spot. The nature reserve has no fixed fine; its sanction is the range of art. 57 of the nature protection act (NSchG), CHF 100 to 50'000.
