Wild camping on the Gonzen
Nothing forbids a night at the Gonzen summit point, because that point is in Wartau. Eleven metres south the commune becomes Sargans, which bans camping across its whole territory. The boundary runs over the top and nothing on the ground marks it.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Two communes meet at the cairn, and they disagree
Wild camping on the Gonzen is one of the rare cases where the honest answer depends on which side of a summit you unroll your mat, and where the distance involved is small enough to walk in four seconds.
The mapped summit point, 47.06750 / 9.43386, LV95 2'751'543 / 1'214'869, elevation 1'829.7 m by the federal height service, lies in the commune of Wartau. I did not take that from a map picture. I sampled the current-year commune layer in a cross around the point: the summit is Wartau, and so is 25, 60 and 150 metres north, 25 and 60 metres east, and 25, 60 and 150 metres west. Twenty-five metres south it is already Sargans, and so is 150 metres east.4
Start with Sargans, because that is where the prohibition is. The Politische Gemeinde Sargans has a Polizeireglement, issued by the Gemeinderat on the basis of art. 10 para. 1 and art. 23 of the cantonal Polizeigesetz. Its art. 19 carries a one-word heading, "Campieren", and two sentences.
"Das Campieren auf dem Gemeindegebiet ist verboten. Auf Gesuch hin können von der Gemeinderatskanzlei Bewilligungen erteilt werden."Polizeireglement der Politischen Gemeinde Sargans, art. 19: camping on the communal territory is forbidden. On request, permits can be granted by the Gemeinderatskanzlei.
That is as wide as a communal camping ban gets: the whole territory, no altitude limit, no public-versus-private distinction, no carve-out for a bivouac. Art. 22 sets out how the permit works, in writing, at the latest 30 days before, subject to a fee and to conditions. Art. 23 supplies the sanction: whoever breaches the reglement intentionally or negligently is punished with a fine. The reglement names no amount, so the general part of the Swiss Criminal Code applies through art. 1 of the cantonal Übertretungsstrafgesetz, which puts the ordinary ceiling at CHF 10'000.27
Now Wartau, where the same night is simply not prohibited. This is a negative, so it is worth showing the work rather than asserting it. Wartau publishes its law collection as a list of 40 items. I enumerated all of them, downloaded the 32 that exist as files and searched every one for camping, tent, bivouac and overnight wording. Two things stand out.
First: Wartau has no police reglement. Not a Polizeireglement, not a Polizeiverordnung, nothing of the kind in the collection at all. That is the instrument that carries a communal camping ban in most Swiss communes, and it is exactly the instrument Sargans used eleven metres away. Second: the Baureglement, 44'000 characters across 22 pages, contains no camping word of any kind. Outside the Schutzverordnung, the only place the word appears in the entire Wartau collection is the Kurtaxenreglement, as a line in the visitor-tax tariff setting the rate for pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes. A tax rate is not a prohibition.3
Wartau does have one camping prohibition, and this is the part that needed care. The Schutzverordnung of March 2008, adopted with the Ortsplanungsrevision, lists in its art. 8 what is forbidden in Naturschutzgebiete, and one bullet is unambiguous.
"die Nutzung zu Erholungs- und Freizeitzwecken wie Lager, Zelten, Campieren und das Anfachen von Feuer, ausser an bezeichneten Stellen"Schutzverordnung der Gemeinde Wartau, art. 8: use for recreation and leisure such as camps, tenting, camping and lighting fires, except at designated places, is forbidden in Naturschutzgebiete. The next bullet also forbids leaving the marked paths there.
So the question becomes whether the summit is in a Naturschutzgebiet, and the ordinance answers it itself. Annex 4 is the register of Wartau's Naturschutzgebiete, and its header states the key: FM stands for Flachmoorinventar and TRW for Trockenwiesen- und Trockenweideninventar. In other words the commune's nature reserves are the objects of the two federal inventories, listed by number and name. That is a gift, because those two inventories are national geodata I can measure to the metre instead of squinting at a scanned perimeter plan.
Measured at the summit, both are empty, and their nearest objects are the ones the annex names. The closest dry grassland is Goodenberg, 1'158 metres east-north-east, which appears in annex 4 as number 399. The closest fen is Palfris, 2'865 metres north-west, annex 4 numbers 942 and 943. Art. 8 therefore does not reach the summit by more than a kilometre, and neither does its off-path rule.34
And nothing comes down from the canton. St. Gallen is a canton where you would expect a rule like this, so I pulled the full consolidated text of eleven acts and searched each: the Polizeigesetz (sGS 451.1), the Polizeiverordnung (451.11), the Übertretungsstrafgesetz (921.1), the Planungs- und Baugesetz (731.1) and its ordinance (731.11), the Strassengesetz (732.1), the Jagdgesetz (853.1) and Jagdverordnung (853.11), the introductory act to federal forest legislation (651.1), the ordinance protecting wild plants and animals (671.1) and the introductory act to federal environmental legislation (672.1). Not one of them prohibits camping, tenting or bivouacking. The Polizeigesetz's only overnight word is the hotel guest register. The Übertretungsstrafgesetz, which is where a canton would naturally put such an offence, does not mention it.5
How a night here actually works
The instruction is unusually short, and unusually precise.
Sleep north of the summit point, not south of it. North and west of the top is Wartau, where nothing forbids it. South is Sargans, where art. 19 does, and east becomes Sargans again within about 150 metres. There is no sign, no fence and no cairn marking this line; it is a cadastral boundary and it is invisible on the ground. The summit itself is the reference: from the high point, the ridge running north and north-west is the permitted side.24
If you want the Sargans side anyway, there is a door and it is signposted in the text. Art. 19 sentence two lets the Gemeinderatskanzlei grant permits on request, and art. 22 says the request goes in writing at the latest 30 days before, is subject to a fee and can carry conditions. That is built for events rather than for one person with a bivvy bag, and thirty days is a long lead time for a weather window, but it is the route the reglement itself provides.2
Does the building-permit duty catch a tent up here? Worth answering because a half-read version of it circulates. The Planungs- und Baugesetz art. 136 para. 1 makes the creation of Bauten und Anlagen subject to a permit, and para. 2 lit. f then exempts mobile structures such as tents for up to three months a year. The catch is the opening words of para. 2: that list of exemptions applies "in der Bauzone", inside the building zone. The Gonzen summit is not in a building zone, so the exemption is not what makes a tent here lawful. What does is that a bivouac for one night is not a Baute oder Anlage in the first place, since the permit duty is aimed at durable installations fixed to the ground. That is the standing reading rather than a Wartau decision, so I flag it as the untested edge that it is.6
Three protections lie near the summit and none of them is about sleeping. The wildlife rest zone Wartau (no. 39.0), whose legal basis is this same Schutzverordnung, starts 297 metres north-east. It is legally binding and designated all year, but what it prohibits, in art. 14 of the ordinance and in the federal register alike, is winter sports off the marked routes, with the ski routes of the SAC guide excepted. It says nothing about walking and nothing about camping. The summit area is also a designated Geotop, "Gonzenkopffalte", number 05 in annex 1; art. 12 forbids terrain interventions and changes to the water regime there, which a sleeping bag does not do. And the whole massif lies in BLN object 1613, "Speer – Churfirsten – Alvier", subarea Grabser Berg und Alviergebiet. A BLN listing binds authorities in their own decisions; it imposes nothing on a hiker.48
What I could not find, said plainly: any fee and any arrangement. No honesty box, no rate anyone mentions, no designated corner. At other spots we publish the word-of-mouth figure because one genuinely exists and it is the most useful line in the article. Here there is nothing to publish, and inventing one would be worse than useless.
What the maps say, and where to actually sleep
The Gonzen is the rock face Sargans looks up at, 1'830 metres, the last steep step of the Alvier group before the Rhine valley drops away to about 500 metres. The view is the reason people come: Sarganserland, the Flumserberge, and on a clear day out to Lake Constance.9
It is not a casual walk up, and that matters for where you will actually be at dusk. The normal route from Sargans climbs roughly 1'400 metres, and the upper section is waymarked blue and white, an alpine path rather than a mountain path, with a ladder section on the way. Plan the timing so that you are not finishing that ground in the dark, in either direction. The Berggasthaus Gonzen sits at about 1'477 metres, some 350 metres below the top and around a kilometre away, which is close enough that the Alpine Club's request not to bed down right next to a serviced house is worth honouring: go up to the ridge, not down to the terrace.910
Where to put the mat, concretely. The high point is rock and short grass, and flat ground is genuinely scarce, so pick your spot in daylight rather than at last light. Stay on the summit ridge north and north-west of the high point, which keeps you in Wartau. Do not drift south looking for shelter, both because it is the other commune and because the height probes show what it is: 1'784 metres twenty-five metres out, 1'677 at sixty, 1'571 at a hundred and fifty. That is the face. Do not drift far east either, because the boundary comes back at roughly 150 metres.4
Every federal protection layer came back empty at the point, and I made the emptiness mean something. No federal game reserve, the nearest being 9'228 metres south-south-west, no wildlife rest zone at the point, no fen, raised bog, mire landscape, floodplain, amphibian site, dry grassland, forest reserve, park or biosphere reserve. Each query ran alongside a deliberately invalid layer id, which returns an HTTP 400, so an empty answer is a genuine absence rather than a request that quietly failed. The one layer that does cover the summit is BLN 1613. The commune layer, filtered to the current year, returns Wartau at the point and Sargans twenty-five metres south.4
Water: assume none. This is a limestone summit with the drainage well below it, and the marked route does not pass a reliable source near the top. Carry what you need up, including for cooking, and remember that the Wartau Schutzverordnung bans open fire inside Naturschutzgebiete anyway. A gas stove, and check the cantonal fire warning before you go.3
One thing to leave alone. The Gonzen carries an old iron mine, worked until 1966, and its adits are on the Sargans flank of the mountain. They are signed as closed and they are not part of anybody's camping question. The guided visitor mine is a separate, organised thing down in the valley.9
One currency flag. The two documents that decide this page are communal and revisable: the Sargans Polizeireglement and the Wartau Schutzverordnung of March 2008. Communes also merge, and a Wartau-Sargans merger would erase the very line this verdict rests on. If you are reading this well after August 2026, the two collections linked below are where to re-check, and one phone call to either commune settles it.12
Where you can legally sleep
- On the ridge north and north-west of the summit point. Commune of Wartau, no camping prohibition reaches it, no permission needed from anyone3.
- Not south of the high point. That is Sargans from about eleven metres out, where art. 19 of the Polizeireglement forbids camping across the whole commune2.
- Not more than about 150 metres east, where the boundary swings back into Sargans4.
- On the Sargans side only with a permit. Written request to the Gemeinderatskanzlei, at the latest 30 days ahead, fee payable2.
- Berggasthaus Gonzen at about 1'477 m if the weather turns, rather than pitching on its doorstep9.
General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are allowed to sleep outside, and on a summit this small and this popular it applies twice over. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense, and on a top where flat ground is scarce it is also the difference between a spot that stays open to everyone and one that gets a rule written about it.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.
Disclaimer
This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of August 2026. It is based on the publicly accessible and official sources linked below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement of the current legal situation.
The verdict here rests on a commune boundary that runs about eleven metres south of the summit point and is not marked on the ground. It was established from the federal commune layer filtered to the current year, sampled around the point, and it is accurate to that data rather than to a surveyor's peg. If you are anywhere near the line, treat the Sargans rule as the one that applies. Communal reglements change and communes merge. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself, check the fire warning, and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.

- Canton St. Gallen has no camping prohibition of general application, established by pulling the acts rather than by inference. The full consolidated text of eleven acts was retrieved from the cantonal collection and searched for campieren, Camping, Zelt, Biwak, übernachten and nächtigen: Polizeigesetz (sGS 451.1), Polizeiverordnung (451.11), Übertretungsstrafgesetz (921.1), Planungs- und Baugesetz (731.1), Verordnung zum Planungs- und Baugesetz (731.11), Strassengesetz (732.1), Gesetz über die Jagd (853.1), Jagdverordnung (853.11), Einführungsgesetz zur eidgenössischen Waldgesetzgebung (651.1), Verordnung über den Schutz wildwachsender Pflanzen und freilebender Tiere (671.1) and Einführungsgesetz zur eidgenössischen Umweltschutzgesetzgebung (672.1). None prohibits camping, tenting or bivouacking. The Polizeigesetz's only overnight provision is art. 52bis on the hotel guest register. The Übertretungsstrafgesetz, the natural home for such an offence, does not mention it. gesetzessammlung.sg.ch. ↩
- Planungs- und Baugesetz des Kantons St. Gallen (sGS 731.1), art. 136: para. 1 makes the creation, alteration and removal of Bauten und Anlagen subject to permit; para. 2 exempts a list of projects, expressly "in der Bauzone", including lit. e the placing of individual mobile homes and caravans outside approved camping and parking places for less than three months a calendar year, and lit. f mobile structures such as festival huts, tents, catering and sales stands and stands for at most three months a calendar year. Because that exemption list is limited to the building zone, and the Gonzen summit is outside any building zone, it is not the provision that makes a tent lawful here. Art. 17 lists Camping- und Zeltplätze among the installations belonging in an Intensiverholungszone, which is a zoning statement rather than a prohibition. gesetzessammlung.sg.ch. ↩

The zone's nearest edge is 297 m north-east of the summit. It matches art. 14 lit. b of the Wartau Schutzverordnung, which excepts the ski ascent and descent routes of map LK 237S and the SAC ski touring guide and guarantees access to buildings. - Access and terrain. The Gonzen, 1'830 m, is the rock landmark above Sargans at the eastern end of the Alvier group, with the Rhine valley at roughly 500 m below it and a view over the Sarganserland and the Flumserberge to Lake Constance. The normal route from Sargans gains about 1'400 m, the upper section waymarked blue and white as an Alpinwanderweg with a ladder section, so it asks for surefootedness and a head for exposure. The Berggasthaus Gonzen stands at about 1'477 m, some 350 m below and about a kilometre from the summit. Sargans itself is a main-line railway junction, which makes the peak unusually easy to reach without a car. The mountain's old iron mine was worked until 1966; its adits on the Sargans flank are signed as closed, and the guided visitor mine is a separate operation in the valley. berggasthaus-gonzen.ch. ↩
