Wild camping at the Glattalpsee

The Glattalpsee, 1'852 m, lies on the Glattalp above the Bisistal, in Muotathal. The line of a federal game reserve runs just behind its north shore, and the cable car and the SAC hut lie inside it. On the south and south-west shores no rule forbids one night.

What do these mean?

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. Wild camping at the Glattalpsee: a lake at 1'852 m on the Glattalp

Wild camping at the Glattalpsee means a night by the lake of the Glattalp, at the head of the Bisistal above Muotathal, in canton Schwyz. The federal gazetteer knows one lake of that name, "Glattalpsee (SZ) - Muotathal", at WGS84 46.919303 / 8.904063 (LV95 2'711'617 / 1'197'509). The lake, its shores and the whole basin around it lie in the commune of Muotathal; the nearest other commune, Spiringen in canton Uri, begins almost 900 m south of the shore, beyond the ridge.3

The lake is about 1.3 km long and half a kilometre wide and fills a karst basin at 1'852 m. It is a natural lake, but since 1970 the power company ebs has used it as a storage lake for its plant at Sahli, so the water level changes. A chain of small ponds lies off its south-west end. About two kilometres west of the middle of the lake stand the top station of the cable car from Sahli, the Berggasthaus Glattalp, the SAC Glattalphütte and a chapel. By the lake itself there are only a few small alp buildings, on the south and south-west shores.36

Would anyone sleep here if it were allowed? Yes, on the grass along the south and south-west shores. The flats there run at 0.5 to 5 degrees. The basin lies above the tree line: the nearest forest on the national map grows 1.8 km to the south, over the ridge in Uri, at about 1'560 m, and the corporation that owns the Glattalp puts its highest closed forests at about 1'700 m. In summer the Glattalp is a cattle alp.36

The rule: game reserve no. 9, and a line behind the north shore

The rule that decides the night here is federal. Federal game reserve no. 9 Silbern-Jägern-Bödmerenwald covers the karst country north and west of the lake. Its object sheet places it "in der grössten Karstlandschaft der Schweiz zwischen Jegerstöck und Pragelpass", in the largest karst landscape in Switzerland, between the Jegerstöck and the Pragel pass, and names among its aims "Schutz der wildlebenden Tiere vor Störung", protecting wild animals from disturbance. The reserve has an integral and a partial part; the Glattalp lies in the integral one.23

Where the line runs. The cable-car top station, the SAC Glattalphütte, the Berggasthaus Glattalp and the chapel all stand inside the reserve. From the top station the path east to the lake stays inside for its first 600 to 900 m, past the Berggasthaus. Then the line bends north-east and follows the north shore, 13 to 55 m behind the water, closest at the north-east tip, and beyond the lake it runs on north-east towards the Erigsmatt. Inside: the wide basin north and west of the lake, where the hut stands, and almost all of the path along the north shore. Outside: the lake itself, the south and south-west shores with the path along them, and the east end, the Seeboden.3

Which side you sleep on decides it. The lake and its south and south-west shores lie outside the reserve, and no rule forbids a night there. The north shore is only a strip of 13 to 55 m between the water and the line, too narrow to be sure which side you are on, and no marker on the ground is known. The Erigsmatt, 4.4 km north-east along the trail to Braunwald, lies almost entirely inside the same reserve, and so does the Silberen.3

Check it before you stop: open map.geo.admin.ch with the layer "Hunting Ban Reserves", the federal game reserves, and compare it with the GPS position on your phone.3

Inside the line, federal law is short:

"Das freie Zelten und Campieren ist verboten. Vorbehalten bleibt die Benutzung offizieller Zeltplätze. Die Kantone können Ausnahmen bewilligen."Verordnung über die eidgenössischen Jagdbanngebiete (VEJ), SR 922.31, Art. 5 para. 1 lit. e. In English: free tenting and camping are prohibited; the use of official campsites is reserved; the cantons may grant exceptions.

The fine is fixed: CHF 150 on the spot, under Anhang 2 Ziff. 12005 of the federal fixed-penalty ordinance (OBV, SR 314.11). Only the canton can grant an exception, not the commune and not the landowner, and none is published for hikers; the office is the Amt für Wald und Natur, Jagd und Wildtiere in Schwyz, +41 41 819 18 44. Inside the line, dogs must be on a lead and drones are banned, CHF 150 each (Ziff. 12004 and 12006). The canton's information board for the reserve puts it in two words: "Campieren verboten."127

A bivvy bag is no way round it. The ordinance names tenting and camping, not the bivouac, and no court has ruled on a night in a bivvy bag in a federal game reserve. Against a fixed fine, that is an argument, not a plan. Treat everything inside the line as closed for the night, with or without a tent. A bed is another matter: sleeping in the SAC hut or the Berggasthaus is not camping, reserve or not.1

Outside the line: what Schwyz, Muotathal and the landowner say

The canton. Schwyz has no general camping ban. Its nature protection act bans camping in the plant reserves listed in its annex, "Das Campieren ist untersagt" (LSG, § 9a para. 3), and there are six: the Rossberg, the Rigi, the Zindlenspitz, the Mythen, the Hoch-Ybrig and the Köpfen area. Its fixed-penalty act prices a breach of a camping ban at CHF 150 only under the protection ordinances of nine cantonal nature reserves, the Frauenwinkel, the Ibergeregg and the Hopfräben among them (KOBG, annex no. 3.1). None of these fifteen areas lies in Muotathal.4

The commune. Muotathal has no police regulation, no fixed-penalty regulation and no camping regulation. Its building regulation, adopted at the ballot of 25 November 2012 and approved by the cantonal government on 2 July 2013, has no camping provision. At the south-west end of the lake the zone plan shows agricultural land, with no protection zone laid over it. None of the judicial prohibitions the cantonal gazette has published for Muotathal since 2024 is about camping.53

Federal inventories. No wildlife rest zone, no landscape of national importance and no military area covers the lake or its south-west shore. The federal fen "Glattalp" (no. 2709) lies inside the game reserve, not at the pitch. How these levels fit together across the country is set out in the national overview.3

The landowner. The lake, its shores and the pitch lie on parcel 386 of Muotathal, a single parcel of 72 square kilometres that belongs to the Oberallmeindkorporation Schwyz (OAK); the canton's board names the OAK as the owner of large parts of the game reserve too. Its brochure says: "Die Glattalp gehört der Oberallmeindkorporation und zählt zu den Rinderalpen", the Glattalp belongs to the corporation and is one of its cattle alps. The OAK publishes no camping rule of any kind, neither a standing yes nor a no, and for one night outside the reserve no rule asks for its consent. If you want to ask anyway: Oberallmeindkorporation Schwyz, Brüöl 2, 6431 Schwyz, +41 41 818 50 60.623

How it is possible: one night at the south-west end of the lake

The ground to aim for is a grass flat above the small ponds at the lake's south-west end. Around WGS84 46.916336 / 8.893126 (LV95 2'710'790 / 1'197'164), at 1'858 m, it lies almost level, at about 1.4 degrees, 152 m outside the game reserve and about 155 m from the lake. The signed path along the south shore passes 98 m away, and the nearest building, an alp dwelling, stands 287 m away. From the cable-car top station it is about 1.7 km on the path, almost level, the first stretch of it through the reserve.3

Stay on the dry grass. The flat lies 1.6 m above the ponds and is dry; the basin floor at pond level is not. After snowmelt the ponds can rise, so keep to the higher grass and off the wet margins. The sinkholes on the south side are frost pockets with wet patches: not there either.3

Two places that are lawful but not recommended. The meadow on the north-west shore also lies outside the reserve, but only about 60 m from the line, which nothing on the ground shows: too close to be sure. The grass bench at the east end, the Seeboden, lies outside the reserve but inside a communal plant protection zone, the "Pflanzenschutzgebiet Gross Chilchberg-Höch Turm", which Muotathal's building regulation lists and its zone plan draws over the east end of the lake. The article for such zones bans uses that run against their purpose, digging up plants and new buildings among them, and names no camping rule. With unrestricted ground at the other end of the lake, there is no reason to test it.35

Where not to lie. Not on the north shore, and nowhere in the wide basin north and west of the lake. Not by the SAC hut, the Berggasthaus, the chapel or the cable car. All of that is inside the reserve: CHF 150, with or without a tent.13

Before you lie down. Open map.geo.admin.ch with the layer "Hunting Ban Reserves" and check that your phone's GPS position lies south of the lake and well clear of the reserve's line; the flat at the south-west end is 152 m clear. The landowner, the Oberallmeindkorporation Schwyz, publishes no rule, and for one night outside the reserve no rule asks for its consent. The alp staff's word goes: if someone on the spot asks you to move, move.36

Getting there, the season and the hunt

The cable car. The Glattalpbahn runs from Sahli in the Bisistal up to the Glattalp. From 28 September to 11 October 2026 it runs every day from 08:05 to 17:05, every 30 minutes, with no runs between 12:05 and 13:05. From 12 to 16 October it is closed. After that it runs only on 17 and 18 and on 24 and 25 October, from 08:05 to 17:05, and 25 October is the last day of the season. The last run down leaves at 17:05, and in bad weather the service is reduced. CHF 12 one way, CHF 24 return; half-fare travelcards and the GA are not valid.8

The bus. Bus 506 from Muotathal serves Sahli until 11 October 2026. From 12 October the weekday buses end at Schwarzenbach, about 3 km lower, and no weekend service is listed, so on the cable car's last two weekends no bus reaches Sahli. On foot from Sahli to the Glattalp it is about two to two and a half hours and 750 m of ascent.8

The walk to the lake. From the top station the path east runs inside the reserve for its first 600 to 900 m, past the Berggasthaus: dogs on a lead there, and no drone. Then take the path along the south shore, which stays outside the reserve all the way; the path along the north shore runs almost entirely inside it.31

The hunt runs into November. In Schwyz, fox and badger may be hunted until 28 November and red deer again on several days in November, and outside the reserve the south shore is open hunting ground: the September marmot hunt named the Seeplanggen slope right above it. Be visible, and move in daylight rather than at dawn.7

Cold, cattle and fire. At the end of September expect frost at night at this height. In summer the Glattalp is grazed by cattle: keep your distance from the herd. On 27 September 2026 the fire danger in Schwyz was moderate and no fire ban applied; at 1'850 m there is no wood anyway, so take a stove. This report is for the snow-free season.36

  • One night at the south-west end of the lake. WGS84 46.916336 / 8.893126, 1'858 m, above the small ponds, 152 m outside the reserve, about 1.7 km from the top station. No fire.3
  • Glattalphütte SAC, 1'895 m. The hut stands inside the reserve, which does not matter for a bed. Half board CHF 75 for SAC members and CHF 92 for others, cash only; hut sleeping bag compulsory, no dogs overnight. Staffed from about early June to the end of October: call before an October night, +41 41 830 19 39.9
  • Berggasthaus Glattalp. About ten minutes from the top station: dormitory CHF 60 with breakfast or CHF 80 with half board, double room CHF 100 a person with half board. Its 2026 closing date is not published: +41 41 830 12 04.9
  • Gasthaus Schönenboden, Bisistal. In the valley, 3.4 km from Sahli: dormitory from CHF 58, rooms from CHF 90 with breakfast; closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; +41 41 830 12 22.9
  • Camping Husky-Lodge, Muotathal. Open all year, about 1 km beyond the village towards the Bisistal: CHF 18 for a tent plus CHF 14 per adult and CHF 3 tourist tax a night; +41 41 831 81 50.9
  • Not inside the game reserve. Not on the north shore, not in the basin by the hut, not by the cable car: CHF 150, with or without a tent.13

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which at the Glattalpsee means one night on the south or south-west side of the lake, outside the game reserve, or a bed in the hut. It is not legal text, it is decency and common sense on a cattle alp in autumn, on open hunting ground next to a reserve kept to protect wild animals from disturbance.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The verdict rests on a boundary that runs 13 to 55 metres behind the north shore. The boundary and every distance here are taken from the published geometry of the federal inventory, which is as accurate as the data and not as a marker on the ground; no marker is known at the lake, and whether the canton's information board stands at the Glattalp is not known. The plant protection zone at the east end is listed in Muotathal's building regulation and drawn in its zone plan, but it does not appear in the cadastre extract; either way it names no camping rule. The lake serves as a storage lake and its level changes; how high the ponds at the south-west end rise at high water is not published. Timetables, prices, seasons and hunting dates are taken from their publishers as of September 2026 and can change; the 2026 closing dates of the hut and the Berggasthaus are not published, and nothing was checked on site. Nobody at the commune, the canton or the landowner was asked. This report is for the snow-free season. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Frequently asked questions

Can I camp at the Glattalpsee?
Yes, on the south and south-west side of the lake, and not on the north side. The lake and its south and south-west shores lie outside federal game reserve no. 9 Silbern-Jägern-Bödmerenwald, and there no rule forbids one night: Muotathal has no camping regulation, canton Schwyz bans camping only in six plant reserves and nine cantonal nature reserves, none of them in Muotathal, and the landowner, the Oberallmeindkorporation Schwyz, publishes no rule. Behind the north shore begins the reserve, where Art. 5 para. 1 lit. e of the federal ordinance on game reserves (VEJ, SR 922.31) bans free tenting and camping, with a fixed fine of CHF 150 (OBV, Anhang 2 Ziff. 12005). Where exactly is the game reserve?
North and west of the lake. The line of federal game reserve no. 9 takes in the cable-car top station, the SAC Glattalphütte, the Berggasthaus Glattalp and the chapel; the path from the top station to the lake leaves the reserve after 600 to 900 metres. Then the line follows the north shore, 13 to 55 metres behind the water, closest at the north-east tip. The wide basin north and west of the lake and almost all of the path along the north shore are inside. The lake, the south and south-west shores with their path and the east end are outside. Can I camp by the Glattalphütte or the cable car?
No. The SAC Glattalphütte, the Berggasthaus Glattalp, the chapel and the cable-car top station all stand inside federal game reserve no. 9, and so does the wide basin around them. There, Art. 5 para. 1 lit. e of the federal ordinance on game reserves (VEJ) bans free tenting and camping, with a fixed fine of CHF 150; the ordinance does not name the bivouac, but no court has ruled on a bivvy bag in a federal game reserve, so it is no way round it. Only the canton can grant an exception, and none is published for hikers. A bed in the hut is a different matter: half board costs CHF 75 for SAC members and CHF 92 for others. For a night outside, walk about 1.7 kilometres on to the south-west end of the lake.
Do I need to ask the landowner?
No rule asks for it for one night outside the reserve. The lake, its shores and the pitch lie on parcel 386 of Muotathal, which belongs to the Oberallmeindkorporation Schwyz (OAK); the Glattalp is one of its cattle alps. The OAK publishes no camping rule of any kind, neither a standing permission nor a ban. If you want to ask, it is at Brüöl 2, 6431 Schwyz, +41 41 818 50 60. On the spot, the alp staff's word goes. Inside the game reserve the landowner cannot allow a night at all: there only the canton can grant an exception.
