Wild camping at Faldumalp: the hamlet answers before the law does

A pin that lands between thirty-one front doors

Wild camping at Faldumalp is a question the place answers before any regulation does, and this report exists to put numbers on that answer and then to show where the honest night actually is.

The pin sits at 2'041 m on the south flank of the Lötschental above Ferden, canton Valais, at LV95 2'623'051 / 1'136'316. It is the start of the Lötschentaler Höhenweg, the 20.6 kilometre balcony trail to the Fafleralp, and it is anything but empty ground. The federal building register counts 31 registered buildings within 200 metres, the nearest 31 metres from the point, addressed Faldumalpstrasse 1 to 47, built between 1752 and 1991. In the middle stands the chapel Maria zum Schnee, built in 1923, whose chapel festival on the first Sunday of August is the one day a year this alp is genuinely crowded.⁷⁹

This is a worked alp, not a ruin field. Old dwellings stand next to working farm buildings, the ground around them is the summer pasture of Alp Faldum, a trough runs in the hamlet, and the historic Suonen channels still carry water across the flank. The hamlet also sits almost exactly on the local treeline, which runs at about 2'000 to 2'050 metres here: forest below and east of the huts, open pasture above and west of them.

So the verdict is set before the law is opened. Sleeping at the pin means sleeping between front doors. This journal treats ground beside somebody's buildings the way it treats ground below the treeline: the person to convince is the one whose ground and whose windows they are, and anything enclosed among the huts is additionally guarded by art. 186 of the Criminal Code, the ordinary trespass provision. Nobody pitches there. The law still matters, because it decides what happens a few hundred metres further out, and because Ferden did write a camping article. It is just not the barrier here.

The article Ferden actually wrote, and how far it reaches

Ferden renewed its Polizeireglement in 2022: adopted by the council on 20 October 2022, approved by the Urversammlung on 16 December 2022, homologated by the Valais Council of State on 21 June 2023, replacing the regulation of 1997. It is published as an eleven-page scan whose machine-readable text layer is eleven characters long, so every automatic search of it comes back empty. Read by optical character recognition, its camping article says this:¹

"Das Campieren und Parkieren von Campern auf öffentlichem Grund ist nur auf den von der Gemeinde bezeichneten Zonen erlaubt. Ausnahmen müssen von der Gemeinde bewilligt werden."Polizeireglement der Einwohnergemeinde Ferden 2022, Art. 10 "Camping / Caravaning". Camping and the parking of campers on public ground are permitted only in zones the commune designates; exceptions require the commune's authorisation.

Three things about that sentence, and each one matters.

• Its verb is "campieren", on public ground. The article is written against camping and camper vans. It does not name the one-night tentless bivouac, and whether a bivvy bag counts as Campieren has not been tested here; this report reads the wording cautiously and steers you to ground where the question never comes up.
• It works through designated zones, and Ferden has designated none. No published communal document names a camping zone anywhere in the commune; the valley's only official campsite is one commune east, in Kippel. On public ground the default is therefore no, unless the commune itself says yes, and the exception route is written into the article.
• On the alp pasture, the article as worded does not bite. The rib west of the hamlet is summer pasture, not obviously öffentlicher Grund, and there the route is the landowner's word, as everywhere in Switzerland.

What it costs where it does apply: art. 2 backs the whole regulation with fines of CHF 10 to 5'000. That range is the regulation's general frame, from littering to camping, not a price list for tents. Art. 1 para. 3 makes offences punishable even when committed negligently, and art. 4 hands the decision to the communal Polizeigericht, with thirty days to object.¹

If the sentence sounds familiar, it should. It is the exact twin of art. 5 of Wiler's police regulation, the article that decides the Lauchernalp report one commune up the valley: the same template, valley-wide, and in both communes a scan that defeats every text search. Ferden's copy was obtained and read separately rather than assumed.

And art. 10 is the whole written law here. Ferden's Bau- und Zonenreglement of 2020 contains no camping provision at all, not even the 60-day building-permit threshold Wiler carries. Valais has no cantonal camping norm: the five cantonal acts where one could live, planning, nature protection, hunting, police and tourism, contain no camping, tent or bivouac rule addressed to the public. In this canton the communal level is where the answer lives, and Ferden's answer is one article plus a hamlet.²³

The map around the hamlet: what binds, what is courtesy, what is 1.2 kilometres east

At the pin itself, every federal inventory returns a genuinely empty result: no game reserve, no BLN landscape, no mire, no floodplain, no dry meadow, no amphibian site, no forest reserve, no park, no wildlife rest zone. The zeros are controlled ones: a deliberately invalid layer surfaced as an error in every run instead of a clean-looking nothing.⁴

Around the hamlet, four lines are worth knowing, and only one of them carries a fine.

• 98 metres east-south-east: the dry meadows. The federal dry-meadow inventory object 7400, itself named "Faldumalp", covers 5.5 hectares of orchid-rich slope below the hamlet. The inventory names no camping fine of its own; treat it as ground you do not trample and certainly do not pitch on, and as one more reason the direction that works is west, not east.⁵
• 86 and 221 metres south and east-south-east: two wildlife rest zones, Uisdra Bärg (no. 27.0) and Faldum (no. 26.0). Both carry the status "empfohlen": recommended, not legally binding, no fine attached, based on art. 37 of the cantonal hunting act. Their season is 1 December to 15 April, so a summer bivouac is outside it anyway. On a ski or snowshoe tour, keep out of them; that is exactly what they are drawn for.⁴
• 1'240 metres east, across the flank at the valley floor: the federal game reserve Wilerhorn (object 34), its partial-protection zone first, the integral zone 2.3 kilometres south-east. There, and only there, a tent is a federal offence with a fixed penalty of CHF 150, and only the canton can allow exceptions. The reserve is not at Faldumalp, and this report will not pretend it is: it begins 1.2 kilometres away, with the BLN object Berner Hochalpen und Aletsch-Bietschhorn-Gebiet running the same line.⁶
• West and north-west: water. The S2 protection zone of the Restialp spring area sits roughly a kilometre west-north-west, an S3 zone 880 metres south-east. The recommended bench keeps about 330 metres from the S2 edge; wherever a spring catchment is fenced or marked, stay out.

And one line for the neighbours. South-west of the pin, 1.3 kilometres away, begins Gampel-Bratsch, and the regional police Leuk-Leukerbad publishes for its communes that camping outside official campsites is not permitted, per each commune's own police regulation, while explicitly excepting single overnights above the treeline. That is police guidance, not a statute, and it binds only across the boundary, which stays 655 metres or more from every bench this report names. Stay on Ferden ground and it does not concern you.⁸

The ask, the bench 671 metres west, and the roofed fallbacks

Above and west of the huts, the flank opens. One broad, gentle rib runs west-south-west toward the Niwenpass and Faldumpass trails, above the treeline, outside every protection layer, and far enough out that nobody's window looks into your tent. The numbers, from 25-metre elevation grids:⁷

• The bench to aim for: LV95 2'622'451 / 1'136'016, 671 metres west-south-west of the chapel, 2'120 m, mean slope 6.6 degrees. More than 550 metres from the nearest hut, 384 metres outside the nearest wildlife rest zone, about 330 metres from the S2 edge, 760 metres from the commune boundary, 1.8 kilometres from the game-reserve and BLN lines.
• A nearer shelf sits 515 metres out at 2'104 m (8.6 degrees), a higher one 850 metres out at 2'134 m (6.4 degrees). The flat meadow directly behind the hamlet is in plain sight of the huts, and this report does not recommend it.
• Directions that do not work: east and south-east, where the inventoried meadows begin at 98 metres with the forest below them; north toward Restialp, where the 25-metre grids read around 30 degrees of gorge-cut ground; and west beyond about 800 metres, where the trail corridor approaches the spring zone.

Up there, one considerate dusk-to-dawn night by a small group is the case the Alpine Club's guidance treats as generally unproblematic above the treeline: up towards evening, gone in the morning, no fire, everything carried out again. The same leaflet says not to sleep close to huts and grazed alps without asking, which is precisely why the recommendation stands 671 metres out rather than behind the chapel.¹⁰

Roofed options at the spot, because this alp actually has them. The Alphütte Faldumalp is rented out as a whole hut (alpglick@gmail.com; people who book it mention around CHF 840 a week, not a published rate, settle it with them). The Herru-Hytta, built 1935, sleeps thirteen. Gasthaus Kummenalp is 2.9 kilometres along the Höhenweg, +41 79 750 47 72, and Lötschental Tourismus answers on +41 27 938 88 88.⁹

Two status notes before you build a plan on them. Camping Lötschental in Kippel, the valley's only official campsite, is currently listed as closed until further notice for safety reasons. And since the 2025 rock and glacier collapse above Blatten, several trails further up the valley are closed; the Ferden and Faldumalp end is open. Both can change, so check before you go.⁹

Getting there, and water. About two hours on foot from Ferden, or the toll forest road to the alp, about CHF 10 a day by the hut listing's account. The Faldumbach and the Suonen carry water across the flank, and there is a trough in the hamlet. This is livestock country in summer: leave gates as you found them, and the alp staff's word beats everything on this page.

Where you can legally sleep

• Not at the pin. Thirty-one buildings and a chapel within 200 metres; the hamlet decides this before art. 10 gets a word in⁷.
• On the rib west-south-west, above the treeline: one night, done properly. Best bench LV95 2'622'451 / 1'136'016 at 2'120 m, 671 metres out, outside every protection layer, with the alp staff's word if you meet them⁴.
• With a yes from Ferden. Art. 10 names the commune as the exception authority on public ground: Gemeindekanzlei Ferden, +41 27 939 12 58, ferden@loetschen.ch¹.
• Not east. Inventoried dry meadows from 98 metres, and from 1'240 metres the federal game reserve, where a tent costs CHF 150⁶.
• Under a roof: the rentable Alphütte Faldumalp, the Herru-Hytta's thirteen beds, or the Kummenalp 2.9 kilometres along the trail. The Kippel campsite is closed until further notice; check its status⁹.

General rules for wild camping

None of this is law on the rib west of the huts. It is what keeps a tolerated night tolerated, on a worked alp where every hut has an owner, the meadows below the path are a federal inventory object, and the chapel has one festival day a year.

• No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
• Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
• Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
• At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
• Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The verdict is a common-sense verdict for a lived-in hamlet, not a claim that a night at the pin is unlawful: no communal or cantonal norm prohibiting it there was found, and art. 10 of Ferden's police regulation reaches camping on public ground, where the commune has designated no zones. The regulation was read by optical character recognition from a scan, so if a wording matters to your plans, ask the commune for the current text. The alp lies outside the definitive cadastral survey, so no parcel-level extract could be obtained, the communal zone at the alp is deliberately not named here, and the owner of the summer pasture could not be established from public sources; the recommendation to ask is meant literally. Trail and campsite closures in this valley have changed repeatedly since 2025, so check current status before you go. Zone boundaries are read from federal and cantonal geodata and can be revised. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves.
