Wild camping on the Eggishorn

The Eggishorn is the 2'927 m summit above the Aletsch glacier, twenty minutes over blocks above the cable-car station. It lies in Fieschertal, whose police regulation allows camping and overnighting on public ground only in designated zones, and designated none: up to CHF 5'000. Eight metres south-west of the cross the game reserve Aletschwald begins, CHF 150 for a tent. And the top has no ground for one anyway.

What do these mean?

Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.

Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.

It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.

Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.

Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.

What "wild camping" means here: one night. A small tent or a bivvy bag, up towards evening, gone in the morning. Not a base camp, not a camper van. Most Swiss bans are written against camping; whether a single night also falls under them depends on the exact wording, so this article checks that wording. What the Eggishorn is: a lift-served summit block, and a crest three communes share

Wild camping on the Eggishorn is the question people ask after the view: the summit, LV95 2'650'390 / 1'142'435, 2'927 m, is the classic balcony over the Grosser Aletschgletscher, reached from Fiesch by cable car to the Fiescheralp and on to the top station at 2'869 m, then twenty to thirty minutes up a marked path over blocks to the cross on the Tälligrat. The station has a restaurant, the Horli-Hitta, and no beds.11

The top is rock. The summit cell of the elevation model is 22.6 degrees, nothing within 100 m is gentler than 18 degrees, the median slope of the 300 m box is 39 degrees, and on the orthophoto there is grey block field on every side, a dark face dropping north-west towards the Fiescher glacier, the path threading up the spine from the south. No tent-sized level ground exists at or near the cross. The only gentle ground within 300 m is the grass slope at about 2'710 m next to the station, its service roads and the ski lifts: a lift station's front yard.5

The crest is also a meeting of lines. The pin is in Fieschertal; 8 m to the south-west, along the Tälligrat, the commune of Bettmeralp holds a finger of ground; from about 300 m south the station and everything below it are Fiesch. The same crest carries the federal reserve line. Those metres matter below.5

Fieschertal bans camping and overnighting, and wrote the word that catches a bivouac

"Das Campieren und Übernachten auf öffentlichem Grund und Boden ist nur in den von der Gemeinde dafür bezeichneten Zonen gestattet."Polizeireglement der Gemeinde Fieschertal, Art. 18, adopted by the Urversammlung on 19 August 2020, approved by the Staatsrat on 10 March 2021: camping and overnighting on public ground is permitted only in the zones the commune designates for it.

Three things follow. First, the exception is empty: the commune's building and zoning regulation contains no camping zone and no camping term at all, so nothing is designated and the rule reads as a ban. The Gemeinderat says so itself in its April 2024 notice, "Auf dem Gemeindegebiet Fieschertal ist das Campieren und Übernachten verboten", and points readers to the public campsites in the valley. Second, the verb is Übernachten, overnighting, next to Campieren: a sleeping bag on the blocks is caught as squarely as a tent, which is the wording most communes never manage. Third, the fine: Art. 2 sets it between CHF 10 and CHF 5'000, Art. 1 makes negligence punishable, and the commune's own police court judges it; there is no fixed tariff, the amount is set case by case.12

The clause reaches "öffentlicher Grund und Boden". The summit ground is unsurveyed, so no owner can be read from any register, but the Fieschertal alps have been the commune's since a purchase in 1867 and the Gemeinderat applies the rule commune-wide. Even if the summit metre were private, nobody offers a consent, and the ground fails on its own terms.12

The neighbours do not change the answer. Fiesch, which owns the station side from about 300 m south, has the identical sentence as Art. 16 of its police regulation, fines up to CHF 5'000, and its only designated camping zone is the valley campsite.3 Bettmeralp, whose finger along the Tälligrat starts 8 m south-west of the cross, has no camping clause in any of its eighteen reglements, only a commune-wide ban on open fires; but its ground on this crest is inside the federal reserve, which is the next section.4

Eight metres south-west the federal game reserve begins

Federal game reserve no. 32 Aletschwald, 1'228 hectares, an area with integral protection provisions, has its nearest edge 8.0 m from the summit cross, bearing 246. A metre-by-metre ray cast from the pin enters the reserve on every bearing from south to north-west within 9 to 183 m, and on bearings 225 to 285 within 9 to 22 m; north and east it never does. The object sheet names the mountain: "Das Schutzgebiet liegt am südwestlichen Rand des Aletschgletschers und reicht vom Eggishorn über das Bettmerhorn und Riederhorn bis oberhalb von Bitsch."5

Inside that line the federal ordinance on game reserves bans free tenting and camping outright, in integral reserves without any zone qualifier, and only the canton, never a landowner, can grant an exception.6 The fixed penalty is CHF 150.7 So the one measured cell near the summit that is nearly flat, 1.6 degrees on the path shelf 175 m south, is a trap and not a tip: it is the marked path itself on a block field, in Bettmeralp, half a metre outside the reserve line, inside any phone's GPS error of a CHF 150 fine.5

Two cantonal decrees complete the picture, and neither changes it. The 1938 decree protecting the Märjelensee area runs its perimeter "den Grat hinauf zur Spitze des Eggishorns", so the summit is a corner of it, 1.4 m inside; but it is an absolute building ban enacted against a planned inn and ice grotto, silent on tents and nights.10 The Aletschwald reserve decree of 2011, which does ban "das Zelten und Campieren" and is enforced by the Pro Natura rangers at CHF 50 under the cantonal fixed-penalty list, covers the Riederalp side 5 km south-west of the summit, not the Eggishorn.98

What the maps say: UNESCO and BLN are labels, the survey has not reached the summit

At the exact point the federal layers return two hits, both labels: BLN object 1706 "Berner Hochalpen und Aletsch-Bietschhorn-Gebiet (südlicher Teil)" and the UNESCO World Heritage site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. Both bind federal and cantonal authorities in their permits and planning; neither carries a conduct rule or a fine for a person with a tent. Everything else is empty: no wildlife rest zone within 3 km, no park, no mire, floodplain or amphibian object, no forest reserve, no military perimeter, with the query's controls passing.5

The cadastre is thin here because the official survey has not reached the Fieschertal and Fiesch ground around the summit; only the Bettmeralp side is surveyed, and its parcel 2286 ends 1.8 m from the cross with the zone "übriges Gemeindegebiet", the BLN overlay and the 1938 Märjelen perimeter, and no nature-protection zone. Canton Valais itself has no camping norm of general application; its nature-protection ordinance tariffs "Zelten und Campieren in einem Gebiet, in dem dies verboten ist" at CHF 50, which bites only inside a reserve decree that bans it, and the Aletschwald decree is 5 km away. What decides the Eggishorn is the communal clause and the federal line.58

  • Gletscherstube Märjelen, 2'360 m, 34 places, early July to mid-October, reached from the Eggishorn over the Tälligrat or on the round trail; the Märjelen tunnel is closed for works until 24 July 202611.
  • Fiescheralp, the car-free hotel terrace at the middle station, and the valley hotels of Fiesch.
  • Camping Eggishorn in Fiesch, 1'050 m, 1 May to 31 October, the site the Fieschertal Gemeinderat itself recommends in its notice2.
  • Plan the lift. The Fiescheralp to Eggishorn cable car ran 6 June to 16 August 2026, 08:55 to 16:55, and is on restricted service from 17 August while the top station is rebuilt through December 2028; the summit round trail is closed during the works11.
  • Not the summit, not the Tälligrat, not the station meadow. Fieschertal ground under a ban with the word Übernachten in it, a federal reserve line eight metres away, and a lift station's front yard.

General rules for wild camping

This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside. On the Eggishorn that is nowhere, so it applies to the campsite in Fiesch and to the terrace of the Gletscherstube at dusk. It is not legal text, but decency and common sense, and above the largest glacier in the Alps it is also the reason the rangers have something better to do than write fines.

  • No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
  • Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
  • Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
  • At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
  • Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.

The Eggishorn top station is being rebuilt through December 2028 and the cable car runs on a restricted timetable meanwhile; the Bellwald, Fiesch and Lax merger into Unnergoms on 1 January 2027 does not include Fieschertal and does not touch its police regulation. The distance to the reserve line is computed from federal geodata, not measured on the ground. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself, check the fire-ban status and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Frequently asked questions

Is wild camping allowed on the Eggishorn?
No. The summit is in Fieschertal, whose police regulation (Art. 18) permits camping and overnighting on public ground only in zones the commune designates, and the commune has designated none; Art. 2 fines breaches between CHF 10 and CHF 5'000. Eight metres south-west of the summit cross the federal game reserve Aletschwald begins, where a tent is banned outright and costs CHF 150. The summit is a block-field crest with no ground for a tent in any case.
Does the ban also catch a bivouac without a tent?
Yes, by its wording. Fieschertal's Art. 18 bans "Campieren und Übernachten", camping and overnighting, so a sleeping bag on the rocks is caught as much as a tent. That is rarer than it sounds: most communal bans name only tents.
What is the fine?
CHF 10 to CHF 5'000 in the commune, CHF 150 in the reserve. Fieschertal has no fixed tariff; its police court sets the fine within Art. 2's range, and negligence is enough. Inside federal game reserve no. 32 Aletschwald the fixed penalty for free tenting and camping is CHF 150. The cantonal CHF 50 tariff for tents in a protected area applies inside the Aletschwald reserve decree on the Riederalp side, 5 km away, not on the Eggishorn.
Is the summit inside the game reserve or a nature reserve?
Eight metres outside the game reserve, inside two labels. The federal game reserve Aletschwald has its edge 8 m south-west of the cross, along the Tälligrat. The summit lies inside the UNESCO site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch and BLN object 1706, both of which bind authorities, not campers, and inside the perimeter of the 1938 Märjelensee decree, which is a building ban and says nothing about a night out.
Where do I sleep then?
Gletscherstube Märjelen, the Fiescheralp, or Camping Eggishorn. The Gletscherstube at 2'360 m has 34 places from early July to mid-October; the Fiescheralp has hotels at the middle station; Camping Eggishorn in Fiesch (1 May to 31 October) is the site the commune itself recommends. There is no bed on the summit, and the cable car's last descent is 16:55.
