Wild camping in the Diablerets
The Diablerets massif sits on the Vaud-Valais border above Les Diablerets. On the Vaud side one night is lawful only with the landowner's yes, and on the Pierredar plateau the landowner is the Canton of Vaud. Across the Tsanfleuron, in Savièse, camping is banned.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping in the Diablerets: one massif, two cantons
Wild camping in the Diablerets is a question about a massif on a cantonal border. The Scex Rouge top station of Glacier 3000, the Oldenhorn, the Pierredar plateau and the whole north side of the massif lie in the Vaud commune of Ormont-Dessus, like the village of Les Diablerets below them. East of the Scex Rouge the ground turns into the Glacier de Tsanfleuron, its limestone lapiaz and the Col du Sanetsch, and all of that is the Valais commune of Savièse. The summit itself stands a few dozen metres inside Conthey VS, on its line with Ormont-Dessus, the south face falls into Conthey, and the Bern line of Gsteig runs 300 to 600 m east of the Cabane des Diablerets.5
A massif has no single pitch, so the question is where a night would actually happen. Not in the village, on the floor of the Creux de Champ or at Lac Retaud: a village, a grazed cirque below the tree line and a lake with a road and a restaurant. Up high it happens on the Pierredar plateau, around the refuge at about 2'290 m, on the Tsanfleuron lapiaz that Glacier 3000 visitors look across, and on the lift and hut ground at the Scex Rouge.5
The answer splits at the cantonal border. On the Vaud side one night is lawful with the landowner's yes. In Savièse the commune bans camping outright. No federal game reserve and no wildlife rest zone covers any of these places: the line that matters is the commune boundary, which you can check on map.geo.admin.ch.165
The Pierredar plateau: the night, with the landowner's yes
The Pierredar plateau is where a night in the Diablerets is realistically spent. It is a shelf at about 2'290 m below the north face of the massif, with the Refuge de Pierredar, reached from Les Diablerets through the Creux de Champ in about 3 h 15 and 1'100 m of ascent on a T3 path. South of the refuge lies a grey gravel plain with braided streams; west and south-west, limestone pavement with patches of grass.58
Aim for the largest grass patch. Around WGS84 46.320653 / 7.193127 (LV95 2'581'091 / 1'129'947), at 2'275 m, about 148 m west-south-west of the refuge and 19 m below it, some 484 m² lie at 5 degrees or less, 2.5 on average. The marked path passes 102 m away, but a beaten track crosses the patch: pitch at its north or south edge, off the track. Not on the gravel plain, which is wet ground that moves, and not on the moss and dwarf willow at its margins.58
Who to ask, before you walk up. The commune administration of Ormont-Dessus, Rue de la Gare 1, 1865 Les Diablerets, +41 24 492 00 20, greffe@ormont-dessus.ch: ask which office answers for the canton's ground at Pierredar, and get the yes before you go. The club that runs the refuge holds only the building and cannot give it.24
A bed instead. The Refuge de Pierredar has 20 bunks, CHF 25 a night, CHF 20 for SAC members, half board CHF 35. Its published season for 2027 runs from 19 June to 19 September; until then there is no access inside, not even a winter room. Book in season by phone, +41 79 127 56 67, otherwise by mail to refuge@pierredar.ch.8
Whose yes: the Canton of Vaud, with no published door
The plateau belongs to the canton. The refuge and the grass around it lie on parcel 3084 of Ormont-Dessus, 11'189'026 m², an ordinary registered parcel in the agricultural zone. The decree of 16 August 1972 that created the Col du Pillon-Becca d'Audon floristic reserve lists its owner as "ÉTAT DE VAUD", and the refuge's operator writes today that the ground belongs to the Canton of Vaud. The Club de Pierredar holds a building right of 300 m² for the refuge, not the plateau.48
No channel for the canton's yes is published. No cantonal office publishes a camping practice for this parcel, and no fee is known. The commune's office is the door: ask it who answers for the State's ground. If nobody can say yes in time, the honest answer for that night is the refuge in season, or a day trip.24
One question is open, and it separates the grass from the rock. Under Vaud law, rock, scree, névés and glaciers are cantonal public domain. Ormont-Dessus bans camping on public domain except at places it designates, and it has designated none up here. If the commune ever read that ban onto the canton's rock and scree, the answer there would be no. The grass patch sits on the registered parcel, which the commune's own definition treats as private ground, where the yes is the rule. So pitch on the grass, not on bare limestone.32
The protected areas do not forbid a night. The plateau lies in the cantonal wildlife reserve Diablerets-Muveran, where dogs must be on a lead, in the federal landscape inventory object BLN 1503 and in a regional inventory of proglacial ground; none of them has a camping rule. The floristic reserve of 1972, which bans picking or damaging plants, lies around the Cabane des Diablerets, not on the plateau.74
Tsanfleuron and the Sanetsch: the one clear no
This is where many people picture a Diablerets bivouac: the pale limestone lapiaz of Tsanfleuron, seen from the top of Glacier 3000. It is the one place in the massif where the answer is plain. From the Glacier de Tsanfleuron eastwards, the whole lapiaz, the Cabane de Prarochet, the Col du Sanetsch at 2'252 m and the Lac de Sénin lie in the commune of Savièse.5
Savièse bans camping on its whole territory. Its police regulation, homologated by the Conseil d'Etat on 16 April 2025, applies to the whole commune (art. 4) and bans camping, caravanning and what is assimilated to them outside places the authority has expressly designated (art. 35 para. 2). The fine runs from CHF 10 to CHF 10'000 (art. 77). The only designated place is a camper-van area at the Binii, down in the valley.6
The landowner cannot lift it. The Tsanfleuron alp belongs to the Bourgeoisie de Savièse, but the ban asks for a place designated by the commune, not for an owner's consent. A bivvy bag is not named, but the words "ce qui leur est assimilable" plausibly reach it, and no decision says otherwise: do not count on it. The ground says the same: bare, fissured limestone with small ponds and almost no turf. A bed at the Cabane de Prarochet is not camping.65
Place by place: what applies where
- Pierredar plateau, 2'275 m: one night with the canton's yes. On the grass patch west-south-west of the refuge, off the beaten track.14
- Tsanfleuron lapiaz, Glacier de Tsanfleuron, Cabane de Prarochet, Col du Sanetsch, Lac de Sénin: no. Savièse bans camping on its whole territory outside designated places, and there are none on the mountain.6
- Glacier 3000, Scex Rouge and the Cabane des Diablerets, 2'486 m: not a place for a tent. Lift, piste and hut ground, zoned for tourist infrastructure since 2017. Book the hut instead.9
- Creux de Champ, 1'405 m: no. A grazed cirque floor below the tree line, crossed by debris-flow beds; the landscape inventory around it has no camping rule, the ground is the problem.57
- Lac Retaud, 1'685 m: no. A road, a restaurant, a car park and a bus stop on its shore; the lake itself is public domain, where Ormont-Dessus bans camping.52
- Les Diablerets village: no. Public ground is closed to camping, and the rest is gardens and meadows. Sleep at the campsite in Vers-l'Eglise.210
- Isenau, 1'864 m: one night with a yes, from the alp keeper in summer or from the commune, which owns the alp. Wild camping at Isenau.
- Derborence, at the southern foot in Conthey VS: a separate destination, not covered on this page.
Where not: the village, the Creux de Champ and Lac Retaud
The village is not a place for a tent. On public ground in Ormont-Dessus camping is banned in all its forms except at places the Municipalité designates. Everything else in Les Diablerets is somebody's garden, meadow or car park, so the place for a tent down here is the campsite.2
The Creux de Champ is a grazed cirque, not a pitch. Its floor at 1'405 m lies below the tree line, with forest 170 to 500 m around, an alp building at its north-west edge and wide debris-flow and avalanche beds of the Grande Eau running across it. On paper the holder's yes would make a night lawful; on the ground it is pasture in the path of the torrents. Walk on to Pierredar.52
Lac Retaud is a roadside lake. At 1'685 m it has the Restaurant du Lac Retaud on its south-west shore, a road and a car park along two sides and a bus stop. The water is public domain, where camping is banned, and it is an amphibian breeding site; the shore is private alp ground.57
The lawful night in the valley is a campsite. The Camping de la Murée at Vers-l'Eglise, in the same commune, has 25 tent pitches, +41 24 492 15 58, camp.muree@gmail.com. Its listing says it is open all year and also that it closes from November to mid-December: call before an autumn night.10
The law: a cantonal consent rule, a communal one, and a ban in Savièse
On the Vaud side, the canton's camping act decides the first night:
"Le camping occasionnel, hors des places autorisées, n'est permis qu'avec l'assentiment du propriétaire du fonds ou, le cas échéant, du fermier ou du locataire. Pour une durée de plus de 4 jours, l'autorisation de la commune est requise."Loi sur les campings et caravanings résidentiels (LCCR), BLV 935.61, art. 27 para. 1. In English: occasional camping outside authorised places is allowed only with the assent of the landowner or, where there is one, the farmer or tenant; for more than 4 days the commune's permit is required.
The first night already needs the yes. The act applies expressly to occasional camping (art. 42), and art. 44 fines a breach up to CHF 10'000. It does not define camping, and a bivvy bag is not named; no court has ruled on one. Treat a bivvy bag like a tent and ask.1
The commune says the same, and adds a ban. The Ormont-Dessus police regulation, approved on 5 July 2021, bans camping and caravanning in all their forms on public domain except where the Municipalité designates (art. 76 para. 1). On private ground it allows occasional camping only with the agreement of the owner, tenant, farmer or other holder, and needs the Municipalité's permit beyond four days, 3 nights (art. 76 para. 2). Its fines run up to CHF 500, or CHF 1'000 for a repeat (art. 11, with the cantonal contraventions act).2
What does not forbid a night. No federal game reserve, wildlife rest zone or park covers the plateau, the lapiaz, the Creux de Champ or Lac Retaud. The cantonal wildlife reserve asks for dogs on a lead, the landscape inventory BLN 1503 binds the authorities, not the camper, and the federal floodplain object of the Glacier de Tsanfleuron, which covers Prarochet, obliges the canton to protect it without a rule for visitors.57
Across the border, a ban with no consent route. In Savièse, art. 35 para. 2 of the police regulation leaves only places the commune designates, whatever the landowner says. How the levels fit together: the Vaud overview, the Valais overview and the national overview; the next massif south is in wild camping around Bex.6
Getting there, the season and the ground
Until late December 2026 there is no bed up there. The Refuge de Pierredar is closed with no access inside until June 2027. The Cabane des Diablerets, 32 bunks, opens for the winter on 31 December 2026, subject to the Glacier 3000 lifts, until 30 April 2027, and has no winter room either: "La cabane n'est ouverte qu'en présence du gardien. Il n'y a ni local de secours, ni local d'hiver." +41 24 492 21 02. An October night at Pierredar is a night outside with the canton's yes, or none.89
The way up. From Les Diablerets through the Creux de Champ on the Prapio path, T3, about 3 h 15 and 1'100 m of ascent. The Drudy path is T4. From the Scex Rouge the plateau is reached only by the via ferrata des Dames Anglaises.8
Fragile ground. The operator points to the dwarf polar willow on the plateau. Stay on the grass, move no stones, keep everything out of the streams, and leave the patch as you found it. The alp and refuge staff's word goes.8
General rules for wild camping
This applies wherever you are genuinely allowed to sleep outside, which in the Diablerets means one night on the Pierredar plateau with the canton's yes, or a pitch at a campsite. It is not legal text, it is decency on a fragile proglacial plateau that belongs to the public, in a reserve kept for wild animals.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.
Disclaimer
This article reflects my research and assessment to the best of my knowledge, as of October 2026. It is based on the publicly accessible and official sources linked below. It does not replace legal advice and is not a binding statement of the current legal situation.
The verdict rests on the cantonal and communal consent rules and on the owner of the Pierredar plateau as the decree of 1972 and the refuge's operator name it; the current land register was not consulted, and which cantonal office gives the yes is not published. Whether the commune's ban on public domain reaches the canton's rock and scree, and whether Savièse's ban catches a bivvy bag, has not been decided by any authority. Every distance and coordinate is taken from official geodata, as accurate as the data and not as a marker on the ground. Seasons, prices and contacts are taken from their publishers as of October 2026 and can change. Nobody at the communes, the canton or the refuge was asked. The verdicts are for the snow-free season. Before every tour, check the current sources yourself and follow instructions on site. A genuine emergency bivouac in distress is a separate question from a planned camp. Anyone who spends the night outside bears responsibility for their own conduct and any consequences themselves. Hikebeast, Leon Helg and Saftladen GmbH accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of this text, and call on no one to break applicable law.
