Wild camping on the Chäserrugg
The Chäserrugg, 2'262 m, is the top station of the cable car from Iltios, with the summit restaurant, a ski lift and the start of the plateau paths. No tent there. A night is legal on the open meadow 390 m south-east, 74 m north of the Walenstadt line.
What do these mean?
Illegal A specific rule bans it, usually with a fine, and it can be enforced. Sleep somewhere else.
Not allowed No real place to camp here. A gated site, a developed area, or nowhere sensible to lie down, even if no fine is attached.
It depends You can sleep here, but there's a condition first: ask the landowner, book a spot, stay inside a set zone, or use a bivvy instead of a tent. The report says which.
Tolerated No rule clearly allows or bans it, but a single night is accepted in practice and nobody enforces against it. Normal for high bivouacs above the treeline.
Legal Camping one night is fine here. Either a rule allows it, or we checked every law and found nothing against it. Still: pitch late, leave early, no trace.
Wild camping on the Chäserrugg: leave the summit to the station
The Chäserrugg is a developed summit. The cable car from Iltios arrives at the summit building, with the restaurant in it. The paths towards the Hinderrugg and the Rosenboden begin here, and ski infrastructure occupies the same top. Leave the terrace, the station entrance and the paths free, after the last cable car too. 1
The summit stands at 2'262 m, well above the tree line, and its level ground is built on: within 30 m of the summit the median slope is 12.8 degrees, and the flat part is the station roof and its apron. South of the building the ground falls away steeply, and the Walenstadt line runs 18 m south of the summit. Stay clear of that edge and use the marked paths to cross the plateau. 6
The Chäserrugg and the Hinderrugg plateau have different answers. The Hinderrugg is the higher summit to the west. The broad plateau runs east past the Chäserrugg station towards the Rosenboden, and its open meadow takes a small tent for a night; the summit station does not. The Churfirsten report covers that plateau and its two pitches.
The public-ground rule, and where the nature-reserve ban applies
Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann's police regulation contains no camping-specific clause. Its Reglement über Ruhe, Ordnung und Sicherheit has been in force since 1 February 2021. It does contain a rule on occupying public ground beyond ordinary use: 4
"Die über den Gemeingebrauch hinausgehende Benützung des öffentlichen Grundes, einschliesslich des darunter liegenden Erdreichs und des darüber liegenden Luftraumes sowie von öffentlichen Sachen bedarf einer Bewilligung des Gemeinderates."Reglement über Ruhe, Ordnung und Sicherheit, Art. 17. Use of public ground or public things beyond ordinary common use requires a permit from the communal council.
Art. 17 lists events, mobile information and advertising equipment, and commercial offers as examples. It names public roads, squares, paths, facilities and buildings as public things in common use. Art. 33 penalises breaches with a fine or a report to the authorities, with a written warning possible in minor cases. The act sets no fixed camping fine. Walking a path is common use; a tent pitched on it for the night goes beyond it. 4
The local nature-reserve ban belongs to mapped nature reserves. Schutzverordnung Alt St. Johann, Art. 12 para. 1 lit. k, prohibits "Lagern, Zelten, Campieren" and lighting fires except at designated places. "Lagern" also reaches lying out without a tent. Neither the summit parcel nor the meadow coordinate lies in one of those nature reserves. The meadow lies in the ordinance's landscape protection zone, whose own Art. 17 prohibits changes that impair the landscape and names no tent. 23
The Hinderrugg side of the plateau also carries core-habitat protection under Art. 8. Activities that impair the protected habitat are prohibited there. Keep any night small, quiet and without fire, leave plants and rocks where they are, and avoid wildlife. The meadow south-east of the station lies outside that core-habitat zone. 23
The announced camping regulation has no published entry into force on 9 October 2026. The commune's current regulations and its council news of 9 October do not introduce it. The changes to the zoning revision on public display in October are a planning procedure, and the draft's Art. 11 deals with camping vehicles, not tents. Before going, ask Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann for the current rule at your exact location. 5
Where to sleep: the meadow south-east of the station
Plateau meadow: 47.15257 N, 9.31637 E, 2'226 m. LV95 2'742'395 / 1'224'103. It is about 390 m south-east of the summit pin, on parcel 1724A. Use the northern half of the open meadow, away from the marked path and the steep edges. This is the same meadow covered by the Churfirsten report. 36
The small central patch has a slope of about 2.3 degrees; the median within 30 m is 4.4 degrees. The official aerial shows open turf with scattered limestone, sheep on part of the meadow and paths along its southern and eastern edges. There is no mapped lake or stream at that coordinate. Carry your drinking water rather than counting on a source on the plateau. 6
Give the paths and animals space. The closest hiking path is roughly 34 to 45 m from the coordinate, and the station and restaurant building about 409 m. If sheep are grazing it, choose a clear part of the same meadow, and if the shepherd is there, ask before you pitch. Do not move fences or use ski equipment as shelter. 6
The cadastre records public-law restrictions, not the current owner. The protection ordinance's inventory names the Alpkorporation Iltios as owner of parcel 1724 when it was drawn up; no fee or standing arrangement for a night is published. The Grundbuchamt in Gams gives the current owner. If the owner or the shepherd asks you to move, move. 28
Stay north of the Walenstadt boundary
The commune line is only 74 m south of the meadow coordinate. South of it you enter Walenstadt, whose Polizeireglement Art. 18 bans camping on public ground outside official campsites. Art. 18 para. 2 allows the communal council office to grant a permit on a reasoned written application; Art. 33 supplies the penalty. St. Gallen's Strafprozessverordnung, sGS 962.11, annex item 21.6, tariffs unauthorised camping on public ground at CHF 80 where the communal rule applies. 67
Walenstadt's clause says "Campieren" and does not name the bivouac without a tent. Whether it reaches a bivvy bag is untested, so keep the night on the Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann side of the meadow. A written permit for public ground also does not replace a private owner's consent. 7
Grabs begins about 180 m north-east of the meadow, below the cliff band on that side. Its Gamserrugg protection ordinance bans tents, camping and lying out in its nature reserves (Art. 5) and camping outside approved places in its core habitat areas (Art. 12); the nearest reserve lies about 710 m from the meadow. The Grabs ground right across the line is landscape protection, which names no tent (Art. 11), and the Grabs police regulation has no camping article. 9
The national landscape inventory is a different kind of protection. Both the summit and meadow lie in BLN 1613, Speer, Churfirsten, Alvier. That inventory primarily binds public authorities; it does not set a camping ticket for a visitor. No federal game reserve covers either coordinate. The nearest binding wildlife-rest zone, Stöfeli, is about 605 m from the meadow and closes access when there is snow on the ground. Keep winter routes outside its boundary. 26
A bed at Stöfeli needs a confirmed date
The Berggasthaus Stöfeli, below the Chäserrugg, takes overnight guests by arrangement only. Its summer 2026 timetable lists overnight stays for groups, on request; its overnight package from CHF 99 is a winter offer. For a night in October, ask for your date and get the reservation confirmed. 8
Stöfeli: +41 71 998 68 34, stoefeli@toggenburgbergbahnen.ch. Confirm beds, meals and access directly with the operator. If no night is available, book accommodation in Unterwasser or Alt St. Johann and make the Chäserrugg a day trip. 8
The Iltios to Chäserrugg cable car runs daily until 25 October 2026, last ascent 16:43 and a descent-only trip at 17:13, and then daily in good weather until 1 November. Check the operator's current hours before travelling. 8
The plateau remains an exposed mountain night. Wind, lightning, early snow and the drops at its edges matter even on a gentle meadow. The cantonal hazard map leaves this high ground outside its assessed perimeter, so it gives no assessment of the hazards there. In snow, the ground and the wildlife-rest boundaries are harder to read. Choose a valley bed if the forecast or the conditions are against a night on the plateau. 6
Other Churfirsten overnight questions
The Churfirsten report separates the Hinderrugg plateau from the other summits. For a night on the Walenstadt side, read Schibenstoll; the western end has its own Leistchamm report. The Swiss wildcamping overview explains why above the tree line is useful guidance rather than a national permission.
General rules for wild camping
These rules apply to the open plateau where an overnight is possible. Keep the station, restaurant terrace, paths and pasture equipment clear, and respect the people working on the alp.
- No fire. An open fire has no place in the mountains. A gas stove is enough.
- Pitch late, strike early. Set up towards evening, gone again early. A bivouac is one night, not a base camp.
- Leave no rubbish. Everything you carry up you carry down, organic scraps and toilet paper included.
- At least 50 metres from any water for the big business, so you do not foul what people and livestock drink.
- Stay small and quiet. A small group, no speaker, no drone, dogs on the lead, and the alp staff's word goes.
