Wild camping in Canton Schaffhausen

No cantonal camping norm, a communal patchwork instead. The whole collection returns zero hits for campieren, zelten and Biwak, and the Randen protection chapter prohibits exactly three things: advertising installations outside building zones, motorsport, and model motorsport in the core area.¹ The city of Schaffhausen and Neuhausen both run permit regimes for tents on public ground, fines up to CHF 1,000.² And a structural rarity: no federal hunting-ban district lies in this canton, so the familiar CHF 150 federal tent fine has no ground to apply to here.³

The Randen surprise

The Randen, the wooded ridge country that fills the canton's north, is protected through §§ 11a to 11c of the cantonal nature protection ordinance, and its prohibition list is short: "a) ausserhalb von Bauzonen Reklameanlagen zu erstellen b) Motorsport zu betreiben c) im ERS Modellmotorsport zu betreiben." Advertising, motorsport, model motorsport. No tent, no camping, no resting clause, with a CHF 5,000 frame behind the ordinance.¹ Whoever tells you camping is banned on the Randen is quoting a rule that does not exist; what remains up there is the forest owner, the commune and common sense.

The Rhine floodplain reserve at Eggrank-Thurspitz shows the same restraint: the Schaffhausen protection order bans fires outside designated places and entering the core zone, and names no tents, while the Zurich twin ordinance for the same floodplain does ban Zelten und Kampieren. The towns, and the waterfall

The conduct rules live in communal police ordinances. The city of Schaffhausen: pitching caravans and tents on public ground is permitted only on the campsites set up for it, exceptions by the city police, fines up to CHF 1,000. Neuhausen am Rheinfall wrote the same regime a generation earlier.² Both stop at public ground; private land with the owner's consent sits outside them.

The Rheinfall itself has no Schaffhausen norm: the only site-specific instrument is a 1954 Zurich ordinance protecting the scenery on the other bank, and it says nothing about overnighting. The operator confirms no camping at the falls, which is an operational rule rather than a law. The lawful night near the canton is landowner country on the ridge, outside the towns.⁵

Tent or bivouac: only the towns' wording matters

No cantonal verb exists. The two town regimes name caravans and tents, device lists that leave the tentless bivouac outside their wording, and the Randen rules do not reach sleeping at all.
